Old Names~Old PBS Shows

My choice for names? Jerusha. I know it's not on the list. I can break the rules, too! Did you ever see Julie Andrews play the part of Jerusha in the movie Hawaii? That's where I first heard the name. I thought the first part of that movie was so romantic.

~Julie Andrews in Hawaii~

Okay, just to be fair, I rather think I'll go with Lovicy Marantha. At first, I thought Marantha was Maranatha and I liked that a lot, too. Course this is from the gal who named her own daughter Mountain so you can see that I have no right to be choosing names.

Of the choices from the old list, Emeline is winning by a mile. Oh, and thank you to those who shared that you knew someone by one of these names. That was very interesting.

Speaking of old...

Wednesday evening, I spent an hour and a half at Vicki's Turkey Feathers.

She featured three videos from a 1980s PBS show called The Victorian Kitchen. Somehow I had missed that one. I'm telling you that it was a fascinating hour and a half. If you're interested in Downtown Abbey, you may well be interested in this. If you're interested in cooking and gardening, you may well be interested. I lovicy-ed  it! (Last night, I watched another three of the shows found on You Tube.)

Tomorrow is the Ice Cream Social...I hope that the sun shines today so I can get some good photos.

Edited to Add: EVERYONE is invited to the Ice Cream Social! I'm talking about the event right here in Blogdom. The information is to the right in my sidebar. You can participate as well as visit.

Have a great day now...

  1. First, a reply to question you asked, in my blog comments, this morning. (Good Morning, by the way!!!)

Nope, no more swimming for "Uncle A." Not even with ear plugs. He ALWAYS wears ear plugs anyway. But now, he has to put wax plugs in (outer) ear, even to shower. For a while.

It's getting better *looking,* in there, though. Opening a bit. ,-)

He probably got some sort of an ear infection, by scratching his ear. -sigh- We all know we shouldn't. We all do it, when "it-itches." -sigh-

    Again Good Morning!!!!

  2. So, names come from somewhere right? Do you think most of these older names are Bible names or some derivative of one? Like Jerusha which would be for a girl, would come from Jerusalem which you would name a boy. Very interesting I think! So many histories to names!

  3. "Jerusha"... Quite lovely. But I never saw "Hawaii".

You named your daughter Mountain. Sure. Sure. *Pulling our leg again*. We've been around here long enough to know the facts, Ma'am. :-))))))

Those "Old This" and "Old That" shows are quite interesting. I remember watching the "Old Apothecary" one. Very interesting, if you know me and "my story." :-)

Best wishes for the sun to shine on the Ice Cream Social!!!

Oh doesn't that sound sweet and old fashioned and lovely? Ice Cream Social. It conjures up such lovely mind-pics, of old fashioned ladies, in lovely long cotton dresses... And children playing with huge hoops, which they rolled along with a stick... And men, wearing straw hats...

    Gentle hugs,
    "Auntie"

  5. Morning my friend. Thank you for your kind words. They meant so much.

I loved the movie "Hawaii", although I haven't seen it in years. It sounds like something I might want to watch this winter when the weather is bad since it does last so long. I'm just going to have to watch PBS more often. Everyone just keeps talking about all the great shows and I am obviously missing something!!

Have a fun weekend at your ice cream social.

  7. Did you know that Jerusha means to take possession of or inheritance? Just a little trivia for you. Have a great weekend Vee.

  8. One of the things I love about You Tube is how we can see video not available elsewhere.

Rosie (daughter of Jewels) shared about You Tube videos of a young woman who creates beautiful French food in her tiny kitchen.

Did you see it? I just watched the second part of Episode 1 and it is about making madeleines. I want to try them soon!

I LOVE old movies, I think my favorite is Three Coins in a Fountain and hubby's is Father Goose.

  10. Hope your ice cream social goes well. But what could go wrong with ice cream? :0)
I forgot about one of the favorite names that our kids friends chose for their daughter...Manna Like Manna from heaven. When I have some time to sit I'd love to watch those videos. Thanks for sharing...

  11. Ice-cream social...can I come? We are having splendid ice-cream weather over here! I always think we can do without AC...until we get a hot spell like this. But maybe ice-cream would cool things down just enough.

  12. Before my daughter was born I searched for unusual Bible names and chose Jerusha, but my husband nixed it! So it was Emily.
Is your daughters name really Mountain? I like unusual names myself.
I can't wait to get home to look up the Victorian Kitchen program.
Have fun at your ice-cream social!

  17. I love old names. My great-great grandfather was Gamalia. That is the weirdest in the family tree so far.

I do adore Downton so will have to check out your Victorian Kitchen program.

  21. Jerusha! Jerusha Abbot from Dear Daddy Long Legs. I think it must be time for a reread!

  22. My second choice was Marantha...lovely name! Is your daughter really named Mountain? How interesting! I named my daughter after an old movie star that I'd heard of and loved her name. Remember Kim Novack? I don't remember if I ever watched any of her movies, but I remember loving her name. Of course, my DD still gets called Kimberly by many.

  23. I love unusual names. We have a bunch in our family - both sides - like Lake, Maggie, Hestiline, Lottie, Emiline...just to name a few. When choosing our boy's names, we opted for the unusual, however they became popular later.

  24. I have never heard the name Jerusha nor have I seen the movie. Always learning new things over here.
I read Cheryl's comment above mine and had to smile. I, too, was named after Kim Novack. Seems my dad had a little crush on her.
Those videos do sound like something I would like. Thanks for sharing the info.

  25. My comment (that I left this afternoon at 4:00-ish) seems to have evaporated into cyberspace! My continuing battle with technology...

Anyway...I thank you for your suggestions for new viewing! I have never seen Hawaii (and I love Julie Andrews). And, as I am interested in Downton Abby and in cooking (gardening, not so much), I will give The Victorian Kitchen a try too!

  26. Well, having grandmothers with names like Mabel & Ernestine I'm thankful every day for my plain name! LOL!!!

I'll be checking out all those shows too! Thanks for the info!

As for names, if I could rename myself (which I could legally - lol) it would be Máiréad (pronounced "mah-raid"), which means pearl, and I happen to LOVE pearls! LOL!!! Oh, it's a Celtic name.

    Mountain eh?????

  27. Well, I didn't realize the word on the list wasn't Maranatha until I read this post. Shows you how carefully I read. I think Jerusha is pretty and doubly so when I read the comment telling what it means. The meaning of names is usually what makes me like them. Either that or someone who carries the name.

My girls were named after grandmothers, my favorite author, and a deceased brother of my husband so I love their names for that reason.

  28. Interesting name ---rather pretty! And thanks for the tip on the victorian kitchen series ... and the ice cream social! Even though I'm not eating much of that these days (though my favorite dessert) I will enjoy visiting.

  29. I have a rather old fashioned middle name -- Pearl. My Mom wanted that to be my first name but my father picked Patricia. I am named after my maternal grandmother who was Paraska in the Ukriane but callled Pearl in America.

i think I know your daughter is not named Mountain, Vee! lol!

  30. Thank you Vee, for the kind mention of my blog. Those old shows are so interesting. I have spent hours on end watching the various episodes and feeling very thankful for every modern convenience I have! LOL. Anything having to do with an English-style garden captures my fancy too. It's all very inspiring.
