Much Too Ugly to See or What Makes Me Smile

The winter of 2007–2008 was a rough one. That's the year that I ran a contest to see when the last of the snow would be gone. Amazingly, it was all gone by April 22.  Just documenting this year to see if I might trust that it will be all gone in three weeks. It may be too much to hope for.

John is just there making coffee. Coffee makes me smile.

Valiant daffodils make me smile.

Walls of dirt...not so much.

Luge Memories make me smile and wonder if there might not be one more ride  this season...

~Bird Song After All~

Now, for getting to the end, this is the awakening of spring in time lapse photography lasting just a little over a minute. The fern got me!

For those in the northern tier, have you seen any signs of spring?

No April Fool's jokes were told in this post. ☺ Have a happy day!

  1. As gorgeous and pristine as new fallen snow is, a pile of dirty snow just doesn't do the trick, does it? (Especially in April!) But with so many other things to make you smile (and you shared some lovely ones!), maybe you can hang in there for a few more weeks!

Are we guessing? If so, then I'll make my guess for April 20th. Wouldn't it be nice if the snow was gone by Resurrection Day?

The "Spring Awakening" video is fascinating!

  2. Vee, That is funny about the lingering snow pile. We had such a big one where I shoveled/swept the porch and walk. I just kept throwing it in the pile. When it finally melted down to the last handful...I told my husband I was sure that was the last of the very ice burg that sank the Titanic. :):) Hope you are getting some nice warm weather...hard to believe it's April. xoxo,Susie

  3. Although there is still lots of snow to melt, close to the house is down to bare, cold soil. Yesterday I noticed some green shoots pushing through, the iris reticulata I believe. If the weather holds above freezing and the sun continues to shine, another couple of weeks could do it for us in the north.

  4. I really loved watching that little video Vee. Sending you snow melting wishes!

  5. Morning Vee
I enjoyed your time lapse Spring.
I'm guessing the snow will be gone in
May some time here in the North.

  6. I think we are all anxious for spring....whether in the north or south. Warm days, evenings to sit on the front porch, birds chirping.....sigh

  7. Wow, you're right - we're sure thinking alike today! And do know how hard this is for my tending-toward rigid/inflexible self to deal with your ever-changing header????!!!! LOL (but it is pretty, I'll have to admit) :-))♥

  8. My coffee pot is empty and I only got a cup (or so)! But, I've had a peaceful morning with the sun popping in and out of my east facing windows. Unfortunately rain is coming and along with that cooler temps, we had a glorious 61 degrees yesterday. I wish we could see the signs of Spring blooming like the timelapse you've shared. So pretty! Have a delightful day! Hoping for dirty snow melt soon!

  9. For us in Western NY-the snow we did get this past Sat is almost gone, as it has been in the 50's. Yes, spring is hopefuly rearing her head. I hear baby birds in our one spruce tree and the Canadian geese have magically re appeared. Hope this is a good sign. Blessings

  10. I hope your snow is gone soon. I am not in the northern tier but there is little sign of spring around here. If I look closely I can see a bit of green in the grass!

  11. How I love the sounds of birds in the early morning coming through my window. Here we have mocking birds who sing their songs during the night. Sometimes at midnight I will hear one of them close going through all of his repertoire that he has imitated throughout his short life. One even had a telephone sound. But that was years ago when he was actually able to hear real phones ring. :)

  12. In your bird song, is that a cardinal singing? Do you have cardinals? I miss them so much. They don't like it in our lack of foliage for habitat.

The spring time lapse is amazing and so is the music. No signs of spring here. I take that back. . .we've seen a few house finches and a junko appeared this morning. He (or she) is on the way up north for colder temps. We only see them passing through in the spring and autumn.

    1. I don't know! It's within the realm of possibility, though I have never seen cardinals at this home, there is a 30 acre bird sanctuary behind us and I used to see them at my former home. My neighbor has a bird feeder so I'll have to ask. I can identify the chickadees' spring song, "Phoebe, Phoebe" and the cooing of the mourning doves. I can also hear the gentle roar of the water falls.

  14. God is so amazing! Every year he does it again and delights in the fact that we are grateful for signs of spring.
OH .. that blackish snow is quite unsightly isn't it? I had no idea it gets that way. It is good the birds cometo sing and cheer you up.

  15. Thanks for sharing the lovely video. I loved the birds singing too!

  16. Loved the video. How graceful are those uncurling ferns! How delightful to see that bit of green growing next to your house. Soon, soon.
I won't bother you with the signs of spring in my corner of the north. But it's here and I'm delighted.

  17. The video was lovely. Oh I do hope your snow is gone by Easter! The Pacific Northwest is so different from your Northeast. No white. I have to mow again...already. The weeds (dandelions) are poking their heads up...hundreds of them. Have a great Tuesday!

  18. Spring is ordained to be triumphant! I love that video with the waving stamens and ferns uncoiling. I love SPRING! It is all sunny here today. Still snow on the ground. Snowdrops blooming all over and I'm about to go out and investigate what else.....

  19. I did see some shoots in my yard! It is supposed to be a beautiful week and weekend here. Finally! xo

  20. Beautiful video and bird songs!!! Thank you - you've lifted my spirits and there truly is hope for Spring to arrive!

  21. Is that your video with the robins singing? It sounds like music to my ears. And the awakening of spring video is just amazing to see. I hope you're right that all the snow will be gone from your area by April 22. I don't dare guess that here. It seems an impossible task with all the snow we have. And yes, your snow is really dirty but that means it's melting from all the rain you had. A good thing. :)

  22. The Spring peepers have been singing for a few weeks here! Very good sign that spring is here, even when it doesn't look like it! Though I said July for your snow to be gone, yesterday, I think it will be gone by the end of April and like Cheryl, I think April 20th would be fine day to wake up to sunshine and no snow!

Kyle, Sarah and I loved the time lapse photography - we are studying Botany this year!

  23. I haven't checked our back yard today but the daffodils nearest the house are trying to pop and it was actually warm yesterday (for one day).

My good friend in South Dakota e-mailed that they were having a blizzard yesterday!

  24. The snow is finally gone from our front yard! So nice to see the garden again. The back courtyard is a different story but we can see the bbq which is a huge improvement! :) Loved hearing the cardinal's song! I could listen to them all day long. xo

  25. So glad you shared the Spring Awakening video. I enjoyed it so much that when it was over I clicked on a few of the others and enjoyed them too.
It was fun to see and hear what mornings at your place are looking like. The birdsong was so peaceful. I think there is no better way to wake up than to a bird chorus. Ours has been starting just before 7 a.m.
Hope your snow is a thing of the past... soon.

  26. I've been enjoying hearing more bird song in my garden, too, Vee! I've spied daffodils growing in a few neighborhood gardens (the deer don't eat them!) and some trees are beginning to bud. We may get snowfall now and then through April, otherwise I'd be tempted to plant a few perennial flower bulbs! I loved the Spring Awakening video --time lapse is always so fascinating.

  28. The bird song was a male Cardinal setting up his territory. I love that sound. It's in the 70s here, everything is greening up and the birds are singing. Spring has sprung in the Southeast!
I don't know how y'all take those long, bitter winters. The older I get the more I can't take cold damp weather. No wonder so many Yankees move to Florida. Anymore cold winters like this and I might move back. ~:)

  29. Loved the spring video. I remember that contest!
It was spring here today. 60 degrees and Ken washed the truck.
Little daisy leaves have started in the garden. : )

  30. The fern got me too. There are little hints that spring will come but it's cold again here. I love the new look. Very refreshing.

  31. VEE!!!! A few days ago it snowed and today was so warm it is 8:30pm and we still have all the windows open. I wore my flip flops out shopping today. It was totally sunny and warm and perfect.

but, it being Ohio, it could snow tomorrow who knows. All I know is I was supposed to be inside all day and I said to myself...."BAH! FUGHETTABOUTIT!" And went out all day in the sunshine. : - )

    Now, that makes ME smile!!!

  32. Hi Vee!

When I was a girl, my family had a cabin in the mountains, no matter how much snow there was, it was always gone by May 15th! Hopefully yours will be gone by the 22nd!

Love, love those birds singing, and the time lapsed video was beautiful!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  33. The luge idea was wonderful.....or at least the maintenance of said luge was. I do love that idea. A thoughtful and loving action.
Our snow is gone.....that would be that inch of slushy stuff that fell on Sunday. Wonderful.
Coffee makes me happy too. Mister is in charge of that at our house.

  35. The fern was the best one although I liked the two leafing out ones just after the fern, too. We still have way too much snow-and I hate those dirty snow banks this time of year. xo Diana

The one thing we really enjoy is morning coffee. Seems like we've given up most everything that is good tasting, but NEVER coffee!!!
