Gifts

It's in the toaster right now. I can smell it already. Hmmmm... My sister has recently returned from some time at the lake in New Brunswick, Canada. She always brings gifts and this loaf of bread from Kings Landing is a favorite with me.

You may *Visit Pam at Playing With My Camera for many posts on Kings Landing.* It's so pretty there and Pam is an excellent photographer. (Pam lives and blogs from New Brunswick. My sister lives in the U.S. and does not blog, though she [my sister] visits New Brunswick and Kings Landing often.)

Sis never forgets my grands either.

This time she packed two alpacas in the car. Awfully darling little chaps they are, too. Oh my! That maple taffy is yummy. I had to hide it on myself.

This last gift... It's the camp kettle, the only one I ever remember. It's seen better days and has now got small pin holes and the handle is a bit dicey. My sister thought I'd like it. I told her it would look darling with a few flowers planted and sitting out on the porch at the cottage. She said, "I'm not taking it back! Do you want it or not?" So I have it. You may remember recent photos of a watering can. This lends an entirely new look.

I only wish she could have brought me the lake...

She did the next best thing...

If people are visiting your corner, what do they take home? And/or when you are visiting your favorite place, what do you return home with to remind you that you've been there.

I'll go first. ☺ When people visit my corner, they often return home with a loaf of pepperoni bread. It is made using white bread dough and rolled out as if one were making  raisin bread. Instead of being sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and raisins, it is "sprinkled" with small pepperoni chunks and cheese. Then it's rolled up and baked off normally. Very tasty! We don't allow ourselves much of that.

  1. Mmmm, that pepperoni bread sounds wonderful! People always leave our house with a full stomach and either home made bread, jam, or whatever else we have been having fun baking.
I think your idea for using the kettle for a planter is a great way to continue to enjoy it.

  2. It's peanuts that people take home with them because I live in 'peanut country'. Yum

  3. Folks visiting Texas usually go home with a cowboy hat or cowboy boots. I buy postcards! The bread looks yummy. So much fun to receive gifts and to know someone was thinking of you.

  4. Love that your sister comes home bringing gifts with her. The pepperoni bread sounds wonderful...soo up my alley. When people come here they don't go home with anything in particular I can think of. Or maybe the only real long distance guests we ever have are my daughter and her family and they do hit places that California has that they don't. Such as In and Out Burger, the beach, and Starbucks. They are building a Starbucks near her now and she is practically beside herself, lol. Enjoy your day Vee!

  5. Pam is your sister? Why did I not know this?? Nice tea kettle. Lucky visitors to your house! When people leave here they take a sense of relief. When I visit someplace, I like to take a rock.

    1. No and no. LOL! Pam is not my sister, though Pam lives in NB and visits Kings Landing often. No, I do not make this bread. I purchase it as do many visitors to my corner (my region not my home). I really need to aim for clarity.

  6. Funny, Cranberry Morning said she likes to take a rock. I do too. even have a rock that I plucked out of the Rio Grande River!

  7. Wait, she bought back what, alpacas? (I'm in a brain fog, and had to go back to read that, lolol)--when people visit here, which is far and few in between, cookies or whatever gets baked that morning/week. Your bread sounds good. Blessings

  8. When people come to Maryland, they often eat seafood, crabs in particular...but that doesn't do well as a take home souvenir! Pepperoni bread sounds fabulous!

Love the alpacas!! (Which reminds me that my son once had a whim that it would be great to raise alpacas here on our property and he sent for some info. We got alpaca mail for years....long after Ryan had gotten married and moved away.) :)

  9. Mmmm... the pepperoni bread sounds delicious! I have never heard of anything like that before. I know I've told you before that my dad's side of the family is Canadian and we lived there for several years before moving back to the states. Whenever we go back and visit we have a list of food items we like to bring back home: candy bars like Sweet Marie, Aero, Coffee Crisp, Smarties, Mr. Big - the chocolate tastes so much better than ours in the states :) We also have to buy spicy mustard, ketchup chips, and pickles :)

If you were to visit Colorado you would probably take back. . .hmmm, I'm not really sure what you would take back. Photos of the mountains for sure. Guess I'll have to do a little research of my state.

    Have a great day, Vee!

  10. Mmmm ... that bread looks wonderful ... and as toast, double yum! In answer to your question, when folks visit our place, they usually leave with a jar of homemade jam ... strawberry, blueberry, peach, or blackberry are all almost always sitting on the pantry shelves ...

  11. I read gleaned that Pam was your sister too!
People who visit us generally take reams of photos while they are here. I suppose I should consider giving them a bottle of Fry Sauce as it is a Utah thing. I warn them not to sign in at LDS venues unless they would enjoy having visits from clean cut bike riding tie wearing 19 year old "elders".

  12. PEPPERONI BREAD... I've never heard of it, sounds intriguing. I love all the good things that come out of your kitchen!

  13. Nothing better than fresh bread! Peanuts are big here, but I'm sure people fill up on pulled pork barbeque when they come for a visit. Once the house is done and I can get out and explore, I'll let you know what people take home:-D

  14. Yum...that looks like a good, sturdy loaf of bread! The pepperoni bread sounds amazing...I have a friend whose husband makes pepperoni rolls.ANYTHING with pepperoni is a winner in my eyes! Love the kettle...I have one very similar shape that is copper. The only thing I can think of that someone would take home as a souvenier would be the remnants of the black-raspberry pie. I bake one for my son for his birthday every year and send the rest of it home with him...IF there is any left!

  15. Pepperoni bread!? Now that's something I could sink my teeth into. That pot will look charming with some flowers in it. That's sweet of your sister to think of you and the grands with some gifts. Now what do people take from our neck of the woods...smoked salmon maybe.

  16. Maybe I'll see what my Canadian friends buy here today and take home with them. I'll let you know...

  17. New Brunswick ~ on my bucket list!! The bread sounds yummy. We have had only two groups of visitors and neither took anything home. Sad, isn't it?

  18. I have a hard time turning down bread of any kind! I love it all.
Visitors to GA enjoy peaches, pecans and peanuts.

  19. The bread looks delicious! Fresh baked bread is the best! The alpacas are adorable though ... and I love the tea kettle! You should fill it with flowers and put it on your porch. :)

Everyone seems to want to buy maple syrup when they visit here - especially those from Europe.

  20. Oh what a nice sister you have. : ) Love the old kettle. I have an old copper one, but it doesn't have the lid.
I'm not sure what people take home with them from here.
When I'm away, I take home pictures.

  21. I love the old kettle, which will pretty all planted with flowers, Vee. The bread looks delish and the pepperoni bread I've made a version of. Thanks for the reminder! When people leave my house, it's often with a freshly baked loaf of bread or homemade jam.

  22. Fun gifts! I bet that toasted bread was tasty! The old kettle is a darling. People take home jam or cinnamon buns from my kitchen....depending how far they will be traveling. I bring home cookbooks and any hand written recipe I can get my hands on.

  23. Beautiful lake view! I think that tea kettle will be adorable with flowers growing out of it! A nice keepsake.

We are in Amish country so visitors often take canned goods, like chow-chow, or jam, or Amish made quilts or furniture.

  24. OH MY! Now that brain fog is lifted, I see..she sure did bring back alpacas, lolol. Thanks Vee!! Blessings

  25. I am always baking or cooking something that I send home with my unsuspecting visitors. The pepperoni bread sounds so good.

  26. Oh, gosh, that sounds good. I'm a sucker for Banana Nut Bread. That one brings me running every time. Now I'm hungry. ~:)

  27. That pepperoni bread sounds tasty! do you make it or is it from a bakery? I have heard of King's Landing from another Canadian blogger. I would love to go there one day. xo

  28. Well our Texans were just here and they wanted Philly cheesesteaks. Our Fireman took them to Philly one day and they tried them. they weren't impressed. However, Flyboy works part time at a local pizza shop and they make cheessteaks too. Soo much better and addicting!

They also got to try salt water taffy while we were at the beach. Loved it!

I love the fact that your sister knows you so well and gifted you with the kettle!

  29. Do you make the pepperoni bread yourself? Sounds yummy. From my area, I'd probably tell them to stock up on the bakes goodies in the Amish community. From my house, it would probably be banana bread or snickerdoodles. I think it's fun to buy a tee shirt or sweatshirt from the area we visit.

  30. What lovely and thoughtful gifts from NB!! Wow - that Pepperoni bread sound awfully good and I can see why that would be a treat to pick up from your area! People visiting my corner often take home some delicious Mennonite Summer Sausage. I like to gather pretty stones or drift wood pieces and, of course, a camera full of pictures :).

    1. Oh and that kettle is super sweet!! I would plant some herbs in that and keep it on my kitchen window or back porch!!

  31. There's nothing like a loaf of good bread. It's getting harder and harder to find, which is why I've been making ours. That pepperoni bread sounds dangerously tasty.
From here people might take some smoked salmon, or a Cowichan sweater (wool, knit by a First Nation woman).
How sweet of your sister to bring the old tea kettle.

  32. Hi Vee, thanks for your lovely visit. I like that kettle your sister gave you. I have something similar and its planted with succulent. And that lake pic is peaceful and tranquil, its my kind of place.
    Enjoy your week .

    Blessings,
    Aida

  33. I have brought home rocks from many places I have visited...and sometimes a piece of jewelry. And always LOTS of photos! (If you can't bring home the lake, bring home a photo!) I have no idea what people take home from our area...First Nations artwork is big and smoked salmon would be among the top runners, I'm sure.

Your sister brought back good mementos of New Brunswick. So...if we ever get to Canada's east coast, you will come meet us in New Brunswick, right?

I like the common sense theory laid out in your post today.

  34. I could live on bread (and butter)! That kettle would look so cute with some flowers or succulents planted in!

  35. Vee you should take a trip with your sister one day to Kings landing! It sounds like you miss seeing it very much.
Hmmmmm...what do people take home form Colorado? I know Rocky Mountain Chocolates are supposed to be very good. I take a lot of photos wherever I go, and I also like to bring home a rock if I can find one ( hard to do in many cities!) I think memories are my favorite souvenirs!.
