Stormy Weather

♪Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky...♪

For some crazy reason, I found myself humming that song a few times this month. You?

I'm cheating this time with five 6 photos.

 ~storm clouds~

In order to see stormy weather, one must be able to see the sky. Our sky is closed in, living as we do on the wee forest's edge. This meant that I needed to get to open sky as in the first two shots.

It has rained a lot over the past month. Gentle rains during the day and heavier ones at night.

~thunder storm clouds~

Gentle rains yesterday morning. I used every trick mentioned in the articles Donna provided, including using the flash. I thought the watering can prop inspired. Hahahahaha...

True to form, the pounding rains began again last night. This is rain splashing in a driveway puddle illuminated by the streetlight.

Should I be ashamed to use this? I was so excited about getting the falling raindrops, then the bokeh showed up (which I was less excited over), and the street light shows up as that put-your-eye-out blob of light.

 ~for Judith~

(ETA: 6-14-14

This is definitely cheating, but Judith suggested editing out the put-your-eye-out blob of light, which made me wonder what I'd
get — bokeh, rain streaks and raindrops hanging from the illuminated wires — I kinda like it, but then I'm weird. Thanks for the suggestion, Judith!)

I do hope that I am learning something even if it is what not to ever do again. Thank you, Donna, for all those articles gathered and for all you do to cheer us on.

You may find Donna and the other participants in this month's Personal Photo Challenge right *here.*

Postscript: I depended on Picasa Web Albums for the photo information, but all that is showing up is n/a. My camera is a Nikon Coolpix P7100.

  1. I'm glad you included that last one. It is hard to capture rain drops--I definitely see one by the watering can. And your stormy cloud photos are so good!

We've had rain, rain, rain, also. I am hoping to see some sunshine in Florida.

  5. Vee, I sing that song every once in awhile. LOL I have taken some really pitiful shots with this camera of mine. I still by luck get some good shots. :):) It rained here again, this morning. It better clear up for our big wedding tomorrow....or I will be sad. Blessings for a great weekend, xoxo,Susie

  6. Georgia is receiving a lot of rain too. I admire your shots. Hope you will have a good weekend and maybe, just maybe, SUN!!!

  7. Oh, these are excellent stormy weather photos, Vee! Wow, I really like them all. The moodiness and the beauty and the water droplet and even the blinding streetlight. I hope you get some sun soon though. It's strange how the rains seem to be lingering there. We've enjoyed really beautiful weather, in between the raindrops, but more sunshine than rain. Here's hoping for you! xo Pam

  8. Ah, you know that I never discourage enthusiasm, so no worries about "cheating" - Ha! Wonderful variety here and I can see that you were inspired. Laughed out loud about learning what not to do. Exactly! Practice gives us experience, and the challenges help all of us go a little bit further out on a limb. So some things work and some don't. I bet John helped out with the water bucket, LOL. Clever compositions and I really like the oval treatment on the cemetery scene. Take a bow, Miz Vee. You did great!

  9. These are all so awesome. Love your cheery words that always go so well with your photos.

  10. I am certainly seeing "storm" in your challenge photos, Vee!! I love that you made the sky dominate those first two shots. And I am also impressed that you captured actual raindrops! I found that quite difficult, and took so many, many shots attempting to do just that.

Now are you ready for some sunshiny shots? (I think I know the answer to that one...)

  11. You got some nice shots - you did good!
I have never had much luck taking pictures outside at night.
    Enjoy your weekend.

  12. Great shots...looks like you and I were of the same mind....kinda hard to catch rain falling unless it has some light behind it....Excellent post.

  13. Great shots, Vee. I like the one of the stormy clouds over the cemetery. We've had very little rain or stormy weather so I almost had to fake it. I'll put my post up a little later in the day.

  14. I can't pick a favorite Vee, I like them all.
Did John have to splash in the puddle for the fourth photo?
I know he's a big help to you!

  15. Hi Vee,

I love your images of storm clouds and the watering can with a drop of water on the spout. Perfect! We too, live at the edge of a wooded lot, and often can't see the sky too well. My husband commented recently that he likes the trees, but if we ever have another house, he wants to be able to see the sky. We like to look at the stars through our telescope, but viewing is not the best in our yard, We're kind of in a dip and surrounded by tall trees.

It looks like Donna is teaching you all some great photography tips. Enjoy your weekend! :)

    Hugs,

  16. Great examples for the challenge. I do like the last photo with the bokeh raindrops and that darn streetlight did dampen your effort - you should have put its eye out. :-)

  17. Hi Vee, your photographs are outstanding. I love the Bokeh in your photo, and your images of the rain are wonderful.

  18. Hi Vee, it's miserable here in the Sault - cold, windy and drizzly - not what a typical June day should be. What has happened to our weather - all over the world it is changing? I don't think I like it!!! Ah well, put my jacket and scarf on and go out into the world, even if for a short while. Have a wonderful weekend. Hugs, Chris.

  20. The watering can shot is my favorite. Bokeh? You're using those $64 words again Vee. -smile- I'm not sure what the definition is. Hope it didn't hurt. -giggle- ~:)

  22. The last photo is my fav! It's so artsy and unique! Of course I love the first one because I think I see a train....and I love trains! Enjoy your weekend! Hope we both have a little bit of sunshine at least! Hugs!

  23. I like the water can shot..water drops are so hard to photograph..you did a great job!

  24. Love the cloud pics especially the second one!

  25. Love that cemetery shot but that should be no surprise since I like cemeteries and poking around them. We are having rain, too!

  26. My favorite is the watering can with that one drop of water. We have had lots of rain too but the sun comes out every day too. Right now is it pouring rain out and we didn't get to go outside after supper to dig up more sod in the back yard.

  27. Lovely photos, I am joining in this month and will be posting for the challenge tomorrow.

  28. Great photos, Vee. We are at the tail end of a huge thunderstorm right now. xo

  29. We have had so much rain that the forest is lush and green and FULL. My garden is, too... getting full of weeds. I must get out tomorrow morning with the hoe again.

With all the trees full now, my house tends to be quite dark. I have to take advantage of morning sunlight for the best photos. But outside it has been lovely. At least the days with no rain have been beautiful. Next week the heat is to return. With more rain.

  31. Love the way you think, Vee! My favorite is the second one. The perspective is great, and it's even better with the oval shape. How'd you do that? And while I'm at it, how did you get the "back to the top" gadget? I enjoy your blog. :)

    1. Nancy~

You're a no reply blogger. I just wrote an email that went nowhere...

The return to top button can be found by Googling. If you trust the site, you can find some cute ones.

The oval was done in Photoscape, a free downloadable program. There is one for Mac users as well, but it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the one for PCs has.

    2. Thanks, Vee! I'm trying to figure out how to fix that "no reply" thing...might take me a while to find it!

  36. Great photos, Vee...and like you, I have to go our looking for the sky, here in my neck of the woods. You have done great job catching those drops in action...love the "bokeh" effects of those illuminated drops!
