Sabbath Rest

When we as Christians are not willing to enter into the Sabbath rest we are called to — resting totally in the truth of God's unconditional love and grace in Jesus Christ — we are behaving just like the Israelites. We are Christians, and we can't go back and become caterpillars again. We won't go forward either, so we make our home in the desert and settle for second best.

Two Thumbs Up

...way up for Sandi's Mama's Angel Biscuits! Six of us ate them last night so that's actually 12 thumbs. ;D

The dough is so easy to work with...

My old can biscuit cutter that used to get tossed into the recycling bin prior to the labeling...

Into the skillet for baking. I had to bake mine longer than Sandi suggested, but that may be because they are bigger. My batch made two dozen and not three as Sandi said. See that ugly one? That's mine! It was soooo yummy. This biscuit is a cross between a biscuit and a roll...so light, so fine.

And now to the table for a rustic presentation.

This recipe is a definite keeper and you can find it right *here.*

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

What am I going to do when my snowbank is gone? Honestly, what am I going to do? Well I won't worry about that today. Here's the ugly mess. I am determined to keep this real.

What about a little contest hidden nicely here on Saturday's post? Yes! That's just the thing. Leave a comment about when you believe the last vestiges of snow will be gone from this scene and I'll send a little prize (no telling what it might be) to the one who comes the closest. Don't select a date that someone else has already chosen. This could be fun.

Warning: Some people have been known to cheat.

Like this neighbor and that one, too!

Have a great Saturday, everyone. (Hope to catch up with all of you later this evening.)

Backyard Treasures

My Rhubarb Patch is Down There Somewhere

Have you seen the rhubarb growing in Lovella's garden? The thought of rhubarb already grown to that size made my head spin and it also made me wonder how my own was faring out in that Siberian wasteland I'm calling my backyard.

Yes! There is Life After the Long Winter

Covering it all back up again, I even prayed for it to thrive so that I might harvest enough for a pie. It's only been planted for two years and that means I'm not supposed to be harvesting a lot. I harvested nothing from it last year.

Then I turned my attention to the creek, which is flowing nicely...

and the gray birch that make me nervous since they don't appear to be as well established as I'd like; nevertheless, there they remain. I call them my sentinels.

Lastly, the deck, which is now in desperate need of paint. It's still laden with sheets of ice.

I can't take it anymore...let me just help this mess along...chop. chop. chop.

Oh my! Who knew that I had diamonds in the snow?

A Sonnet Perhaps?

Sonnet #30

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste;
Then can I drown an eye, unused to flow,
For precious friends hid in death's dateless night,
And weep afresh love's long-since-cancelled woe,
And moan th' expense of many a vanished sight;
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er
The sad account of fore-bemoanèd moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before.

But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restored and sorrows end.

~William Shakespeare

Once upon I time I committed that one to memory...I loved saying "bemoanèd." I remembered just enough to find it today. That's all.

I've only written one sonnet in my life. A bad one. Too awful to share here. Too awful to even consider entering a sonnet writing contest.

Perhaps you write poetry; perhaps you'd be interested in entering the "Bed of Roses" Sonnet Contest at A Prairie Home Companion. If you do, I hope you win!

It's the Little Things

As the old song goes "Little Things Mean a Lot." The older I get, the more convinced of it I am. It doesn't take much these days to give me pleasure in the simple joys. I've got lots of little things to share with you today.

These are some wee treasures that arrived in yesterday's mail from Among the Hedgerows.

Lynda tossed in the beautiful old-fashioned shoe tags as an extra, which was such a thoughtful thing to do. I love them! Thank you so much, Lynda! Do you see where I am putting my tags these days? Someplace where I can see them and enjoy them yet they'll be handy when tagging a gift. Look around, but don't look too far. ;>

Yesterday, Alison posted another marvelous list of Puttery Treats. Oh I love Puttery Treats!

What's any worse than seeing this in the laundry?

Well, besides this?

But we can change the first à la Puttery Treats to this:

And a few minutes of folding transforms that nasty pile, too.

(As you can see, I was desperate for a before and after!)

After all of the work on the tea cozy (see yesterday's post), I even made a little change to that. See?

On Monday, Pat gave such a wonderful link behind the scenes in comments for seasoned skillets. So many of you confessed that you didn't own a skillet, but I want everyone in the country to own a good skillet...at least one. So, for your browsing and shopping pleasure, I'm giving you the link to Lodge Manufacturing up front where you can see it.

This is my happy collection of skillets and cast iron pans that I keep seasoned by using edible mineral oil. I also treat wooden handles and my wooden utensils every month or so with the oil. You can use 100% vegetable oil or even shortening, but never use Canola oil or any oil that could go rancid. You can't go wrong to pick up the edible mineral oil as it lasts forever and is far easier to use.

Finally, as extra incentive to get out your cast iron skillet, to purchase one or to beg for one, here's the link to a recipe for corn bread in a skillet. Can you think of any better presentation for the supper table? Believe me, it makes people's eyes light up!

Have a fantastic Wednesday and don't forget to find a Puttery Treat Challenge to call your own! Remember: It's the little things...

Edited to Add: Yet another "Little Thing" as The Farmer's Wife is having a little giveaway and you can play along, too. Do you have a dear hubby who really needs to pay attention and notice things? Well "The Farmer" should pay better attention and that's what the giveaway is all about. Suzanne will be giving away his Farmall some beautiful dishcloths. Check it out!

Stitches-for-Tea

Welcome to this week's edition (April 6–12) of La Tea Dah's Hospital-i-tea where we are to share ideas and pictures that involve stitching for the tea table. Any kind of stitches count: sewing, embroidery, knitting, crochet, tatting, quilting, etc. The work can be yours or of someone else, but should be homemade rather than done by factory machines. Ideas are napkins, tea cozies, table linens, and other creations made with tea themes.

Alack and alas, until last evening at 5, I had nothing to share. I hated the idea of sitting out this week so much, even though I had made my apologies to La Tea Dah already, that I couldn't let it go without attempting something...anything! Besides, I'd always wanted a tea cozy...

So here's my picture story:

I remem-bered some old quilted fabric packed away for over 15 years, which definitely needed a good washing.
p

A friend had already sent me a tea cozy pattern. Thanks, Teresa!

Now that I know how to do my own bias tape, this part was a cinch.

Using this quilt block pattern, I was able to reproduce the following embroi-dery pattern. Source

...which changed this to

that

Yes, the time is correct...roughly five hours to change this to that, but who's counting when I can participate after all?!

Have fun on the remainder of your Stitches-for-Tea tour!

Biscuits and Skillet Cookies

Would you believe that I finally learned how to place homemade bias tape all the way around a towel? I did. Here's proof.

It certainly took me long enough, which is somewhat disturbing for me to consider that my brain power may not be quite as Einsteinesque as I'd like. [I really do need to add a wink here; otherwise, I just sound like an idiot, which I am...LOL!] But if one sits at Alicia's February 21st post long enough...I'm certain that she wondered and was considering calling out the blog police. For those of you who remember my doing this before, well, yes, I did, but that was back when I was doing a one or two edge treatment therefore avoiding the bends in the corner. There's probably an analogy there somewhere, but I'll save it for another day.

The little biscuit recipe comes from PatternBee. It was a happy day last week when my order arrived!

Now I have three other patterns to do — chicken a la king, strawberrry jam, and applesauce. I find the prices at PatternBee very reasonable. The last embroidery pattern that I purchased was for a gingerbread recipe and it cost more than all of these patterns put together and isn't any more charming (different company).

And all weekend long, whenever I needed a pick-me-up or something to serve drop-in guests, I had Cast Iron Skillet Cookies thanks to Brin. You can find her recipe right here.

Remember last Friday when I was asking a lot of snoopy questions about your blogrolls? Well, check out what Dawn at The Feathered Nest is doing with hers and prepare to be amazed! This would work beautifully for any of you with lengthy blogrolls. In the meantime, I am going to ponder what to do with mine. I only need to make one or two quick changes and have a "policy" in place for what to do in the future. %}

Off to attempt something for tomorrow's post so that I can participate in this week's Tea Blogathon. I've already explained to La Tea Dah that I have nothing for show and tell. N-O-T-H-I-N-G and this will not do.

Have a wonderful Monday, dear friends.

The Implications of Our Faith

Let us consider the implications of our faith. Either Christ did everything for us or He did nothing...either all of our sins are totally forgiven or none of them are forgiven. Eternal life must last forever or how is it 'eternal'? You either stand in the righteousness of Christ or you have no righteousness at all. And what is faith? It is 'being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.' (Hebrews 11:1)~ Bob George (paraphrased)

Breathe
Michael W. Smith

This is the air I breathe
This is the air I breathe
Your holy presence living in me

This is my daily bread
This is my daily bread
Your very word spoken to me

And I I'm desperate for you
And I I'm I'm lost without you

This is the air I breathe
This is the air I breathe
Your holy presence living in me

This is my daily bread
This is my daily bread
Your very word spoken to me

And I'm, I'm desperate for you
And I'm, I'm lost without you

And I'm, I'm desperate for you
And I'm, I'm lost without you

I'm lost without you...

An Oversight!

Another of my favorite bloggers was overlooked yesterday: Manuela @ The Feathered Nest. And, just for that oversight, I am presenting Manuela with both awards. Manuela is one of those prolific bloggers who consistently shares her home, her ideas, her recipes, etc. I love visiting her!

Here's that old Saturday snowbank from a slightly different angle, but with the discarded Christmas tree prominently featured. These shots are taken from my viewpoint leaving my humble abode completely out of it. ;> We had some snow yesterday that turned to rain. I think I'll go out later today and attempt to rake some of the dirt off the banking and closer to the street.

And the Award Goes to...

* Suzanne @ The Farmer's Wife writes every day and I am constantly amazed by the variety in her posts. She writes poignantly, wittily, intelligently. Currently, she is doing facelifts. Check it out!

* Kari & Kijsa These sisters provide a joyous look at home decorating and all the possibilites with the ever present Diet Coke in hand. Lots of wonderful ideas here!

* Brenda @Coffee Tea Books and Me is doing a series on thrift where she shares many wonderful ideas on saving money and stocking up in the pantry. Check out how she organized her freezer!

Hospitality
has been hosting a Tea Blogathon extraordinaire and it's been so much fun. She's so organized and has everything so carefully planned...hope that you'll join the fun, if you haven't already.

* Sandi @ Holding Patterns What can I say about Sandi other than that she is laugh-out-loud witty and always thought-provoking. Her recent post on harassment in the work place was fantastic, but then she's always writing fantastic things.

* Pat @ Milli Fiori Favoriti is a recent treasure find for me. She is currently providing a tour of Manhattan that you shouldn't miss. What a wonderful teacher she is!

* Judy @ My Front Porch is a constant and steady influence on me. I am learning so much about how to be a grandmother by watching her interact with her grands. She also lives in one of the most beautiful spots on earth and takes great photos.

* Miss Sandy @ Quill Cottage never ceases to impress me with her turn of a phrase. She writes incredible posts on everything from faith to decorating. I am enchanted whenever she takes a walk down memory lane.

* Barbara @ Ramblings From an English Garden has been such a blessing to me. She has been doing an ongoing series of autobiographical stories sharing her life in the most transparent of ways. Just incredible. Not only that, she takes beautiful photos of her very English world.

* Linds @ Rocking Chair Reflections is such a good read. We have lived somewhat parallel lives and I am always intrigued by her story. Currently, she is stuck at home recuperating from an injury and could use some cheerful company. She'd put the kettle on if she were able!

* Mary @ Little Red House shares her joy for dishes and birds and treasures that she's finding in the backs of her magical closets.

* Linda @ Restyled Home does an incredible job of keeping her finger on the pulse of what's going on in the decorating world with color and design all the while "keeping it real."

* Alice @ Tea in My Cup has the most fantastic recipes. I baked her orange scones yesterday and my goodness were they ever fantastic.

* Melissa @ The Inspired Room provides some of the most incredible decorating advice. Her suggestions are thoughtful and well written. You can't go wrong to heed such "inspired" recommendations.

* Lovella @ What Matters Most is responsible for getting so many bloggers up off the sofa and out the door. Soon I'll have no excuse and must join them! Also in British Columbia, she shares the most delightful photos, but check out the recent vacation to Hawaii, too.

That's fifteen! Ten for Charli and Me and five for Happyone who didn't even give me a requirement in the first place.

The following amazing bloggers are receiving the YOU MAKE MY DAY award:

* Abbie @ Abbie's Place has a quirky, fun sense. I find myself grinning a lot when I visit.

* Robin @ Bittersweet Punkin is a dear soul and I love visiting. She and I also share a similar taste in music. (At least, I've finally learned how to launch the playlist so that I'm not bugging her by sitting under her window.)

* Happyone @ Captain's Log shares her life in a happy way. She does! But you should check out her recent MEME for a surprise...who does she want to boot into next week? LOL! Her three moments of gratitude are a delight as well.

* Mary Isabella @ Daisy Bouquet just makes me smile. She has a loving and cheerful spirit that comes through in her posts and stories. I always leave her blog smiling.

* Cindy @ In a Garden is a new empty-nester just this week. She shares about faith and family in a wonderful way.

* Kari @ Just Livin' Large always makes me laugh. She's irreverent without being mean; witty without being caustic; and, besides, she agrees with me on most political issues. ;D

* Penny @ Lavender Hill Studio has a cheerful, beautiful blog and she shares her work and her decorating projects with such generosity. I can't wait to see what her most recent decorating home project has been, but it'll be a while. She's soooo busy these days!

* Brin @ My Messy, Thrilling Life is a delight. Pure and simple. Recipes, devotionals, travelogues, you name it; she's got it!

* Teresa @ Plumwater Cottage shares movies and books, decorating and gardening, and takes great photos of her home. Not to mention another great playlist!

* Margo @ Robolady creates beauty from junk. It's always fascinating to see what this talented lady has been doing.

* Kathy @ Shocking Pink Thread is a recent find for me and I'm so glad that I found another New England blogger who shares that sense of like-mindedness. I love to see photos of her home and to hear what she thinks.

* C.C. @ Six Months of Settled is a witty wonder of a writer. Better than that bunch of alliteration! She is on her way back to the great continent of Africa and there had better be a good internet connection at the library where she'll serve as the librarian.

* BumbleVee @ The "Bearister" Bookcase and I do not always share like-mindedness because she's way cooler than I am. She rides a motorcyle! At her age! (And she likes to take potshots at me just like that! ;D)

* Dawn @ The Feathered Nest always shares the most beautiful creations. I admire her talent and always feel that the world is a little more beautiful because of her blog.

* Jan @ The Life and Times of Li'l Ol' Me makes me laugh, is genuine, and supportive. How can you go wrong with those combinations? You can't!

* Terri @ Wind Lost is one of the most thoughtful and articulate of persons sharing mostly her journey in decorating her lovely home. When she shares on an even more personal level, her writing is poignant and piercing. What is this with the alliteration today?!

Sixteen and so many more! I can't think of a blogger who does NOT make my day. Bloggers are some of the most creative, intelligent, thoughtful, and articulate people I've ever encountered. I read so many more than are even on my blogroll.

Speaking of my blogroll, I carefully select those with whom I share a certain like-mindedness and who write a few times a week and also make it easy for me to comment. Is that how the rest of you are handling it, too?

Edited to Add: I've just received an email asking for clarification about "the rules." It's true! There are no strings attached to either of these awards. If you would like there to be, create your own. I just wanted you to enjoy them. I've been much too selfish holding on to awards when they should be scattered freely all over.

Oh, don't forget, I still want you to comment on your blogroll...please!

A Little Adventure and An Award

Yesterday, everything came together perfectly at about three in the afternoon. I had finished gathering the items for Judy's box and had wrapped it securely with tons of packing tape. Good luck with that, Judy! So all that remained was to get myself out of the house and to the post office.

Checking my wallet first, I realized that a stop by the bank's ATM machine was in order because a few groceries were needed as well.

I don't know how it is with you, but I am such a homebody that I forget how to "be" out there in the great, big, scary world. As I was pulling up to the ATM machine slowly...I know how easy it is to rip off a mirror...don't ask...another driver roared up behind me and sat there revving her motor.

I went on about my banking business and tried to ignore the fact that she was sitting right on my ar$e and revving the danged motor. (Sandi, I really need to take some lessons!) Anyway, apparently, it was bugging me a lot more than even I thought because I started to drive off before I had responded to the "Is your transaction complete?" query. Yikes! You know where this is going, right? But, no, there were no fender benders nor did I get hurt. I just grinned at her in my most apologetic way while she grimaced back at me. I pressed the "yes" and scurried back to my car, hopped in, and slammed the door...on my seat belt buckle with a c-r-u-n-c-h.

Okay, one errand down, two to go. Off to the post office where all went amazingly well except for the fact that I had to write down everything that was in the box and when I asked if that little customs tag would remain on the package the post office guy said that it would. Ackkkkk! Don't peek, Judy!

Phew! Two errands down, one to go...off to the hometown grocery because, even though the prices there are sky high, the cost of gas is keeping me closer than ever to home.

So I picked up my oranges ($2.99), Smart milk ($2.99), whole wheat bread ($3.00), a pound of hamburger ($3.10), and a small package of shredded cabbage ($1.00) and headed for the checkout where two young ladies were manning the registers. There were long lines at both lanes, but finally I was next.

The young man ahead of me was cashing his paycheck and purchasing a carton of cigarettes for $11.75 or something like that. After his change had been counted back, my order was rung up and paid for. But the man ahead of me was still standing there counting his change.

He says, "Something's wrong here! This isn't right!"

The oranges, milk, bread, hamburger, cabbage, and I all sat there waiting patiently as the cashier turned her attention to the problem. Poor thing was so shook that she was having troubles counting back the change. She took the money out of his hand. Counted it. Set it on top of her register. Removed the check. Handed it back to him. Counted out the additional funds and handed it all over.

In the meantime, I decide that perhaps I can handle bagging my own groceries. Person behind comes up and takes my place in line as I switch to the end of the counter and fiddle with the plastic bags. Man ahead is still counting the money. Finally, he is satisfied and leaves. I am packing when I become aware of a piece of paper fluttering down — the check! The check is not in the drawer! I tap the cashier gently on the shoulder and hand her the check. Gee, I sure hope that her count was good at the end of her shift.

At this point, I can't wait to get home. Nothing nervewracking like that ever happens here!

Another beautiful award was given to me by Pat @ Milli Fiori Favoriti. Thank you so much, Pat, it's a beauty and I will honor it and pass it along soon!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Last Sunday, two dear bloggers gave me this award. Happyone and Me of Charli and Me. There's a huge difference between the two sets of rules:

Happyone's: This is not meant as a tag but just to say your blogs are great and if you want to pass it along please do. I enjoy all the blogs that I read and here are just 5 of them.

Me's: The recipient must agree to award it to at least ten people whose blogs are found to be worthy of an Excellent Blog Award. The award may be given to more than ten blogs, to a blog that has already received one or to the person or blog from whence it came. The blogger who gave the award must be notified that it is accepted with the conditions imposed. Then the names of the blogs must be listed and those bloggers must be notified that an award has been received.

This is an honor that I do not take lightly. I will be passing on this award and that's going to require some thought. I have no time for thought this morning so I shall return to this at some future date. Thank you to both Happyone and Charli and Me for enjoying spending time here. I am grateful.

A wonderful Wednesday to you all!

Decor-a-tea

March 30 - April 5 Decor-a-Tea
Share ideas and pictures that incorporate tea and/or tea themes into home decor. Displays, art, prints, fabrics, and collection all count in this category. Do you use teapots and teacups as a part of your home decor? If so, describe how.

If you're arriving from La Tea Dah's Decor-a-tea, welcome! If you're one of the faithful, thank you for being here! If you just fell through a portal and have no idea how you arrived, April Fool's!

This little tour is going to begin with the sublime and head right down the tubes to the ridiculous with a photo of my medicine cabinet. You'll want to hang in there for that!

My favorite decoration of late with teacups has already been featured earlier (several times :P), but never one to shun the chance to post yet another picture, here it is after Easter. I'm really missing the blooms on the cactus!

All I did was to play off of another blogger's idea by using an empty antique picture frame and tying teacups from the top edge with ribbons.

Before I was displaying the little nest in the apothecary jar, as you see in my header, I often displayed it this way:

Just find your favorite teacup and turn it on its side resting the nest inside. This works very well for taller shelves. If displaying on a tabletop, the teacup could be rightside up for a visual surprise.

Last week, so many of you mentioned Sandy Lynam Clough an artist who collects teacups and teapots herself to create wonderful vignettes to paint. I love her work! Her calendars for 2005 and 2006 are among my favorite things...see, I've even saved the covers.

The calendars themselves are used for crafts and cover-ups. This is a closet door where I hang my necklaces.

And, as promised, the medicine chest where I use tea mugs to store my toothbrush and razors, etc. Whatever fits in!

Thank you for visiting today, feel free to wander about in my blog, I'm sure you'll discover more Decor-a-tea. Don't forget to continue the tour at La Tea Dah's!
