A Green "Monet"~Inspiration Thursday

When I first learned about today's inspiration, I wasn't sure that I had any "green" inspirations. I could show a leaf or something and, in a way, that is what I'm doing. I found this dish in the depths of the china cupboard. Like yesterday's lamb, it belonged to my grandmother; it looks like majolica to me, though it has no markings.

While it looks okay from a distance, on closer inspection —

it's a real mess! All those apricot colored bits on the tips of the leaves are where the paint has worn off. There are many problems with this dish. I think I'll tag it with a "do not use for food" note.

Yes, it's a monet all right

Wasn't this inspiring? Well don't you worry, there'll be some inspiring offerings at Mary's Little Red House later today all featuring green.

Do you own any less than perfect by a lot pieces that you are unwilling to part with?

  1. I think the *less than perfect* are the pieces with the most memories -- the real treasures. Oh, yes -- I have a few!

  2. That plate would look great hanging in your kitchen!

I have some things I wouldn't want to part with - even though less than ideal. I know at some point when I am gone my kids will say "why did mom have all this junk!" LOL!

Pretty green! I need color - everything gray and cold here!

  3. That is a pretty plate Vee. It does look like majolica and it looks like a chestnut leaf and blossom on it. I have a lot of less than perfect things in the cupboards. One is a copper lustre ware jug that is missing it's handle, the green paint is worn off and it has a chip out of the rim. It was my mum's and it sits on the sill in the family room. Some days I think I should just toss it but I don't. The rain has stopped and the sun is shining for today. Snow tomorrow. I hope you have a lovely day. Pam

  4. It's an interesting looking plate Vee, I like the basket weave trim around the edges. I too think it would look nice hanging on a wall.
Can't say I have any imperfect nostalgic pieces around as I have very little that was passed on.

How interesting, that the paint has worn off, showing *something apricot* underneath. Wonder what it is????????????????? ,-)

  8. Your plate is lovely. I would display it in your kitchen. I have a few special pieces that belonged to my grand mother. I display them on a shelf over my laundry area. It is a sweet reminder of her.

  9. It does remind me of a Monet painting with the colors. I have pieces of crystal from my grandmothers that I cherish and try to use on special occasions, although I always hold my breath when my hubby helps clean the dishes:-D XOXO

  11. Of course I do, I, the queen of sentimentality. Actually on the closer look I thought that was just the was it was, an "effect", not a wearing away of the painting. And it's interesting how in the first photo it looks more olive toned than the other photos. I think it's nice how you have it, displayed!

  14. My first thought was "how come an old plate has a marijuana leaf on it?" (No, I don't use the stuff. LOL) Someone else mentioned chestnut, so that is probably what it is. (Amazing how the leaf shapes resemble each other.) Anyway, it is a lovely old plate. Hang it up. :) Boxes of old stuff like that, and most is sentimental value. Probably no one else cares.

  15. After reading the above comment I took another look - yes, it does resemble a "BC Bud" leaf (our area is famous for the stuff), but I have to go with chestnut. I have a few old things that I don't use but can't part with for sentiment's sake. Like others, I think your plate would look lovely hanging on a wall.

  17. A very pretty plate. I was struck by the beauty of the leaf and then the interesting outer edge. I must say I didn't notice any flaws until I clicked on it for a better view. It just looked like a cluster of apricot colored flowers to me. A lovely treasure, especially since it once belonged to your grandmother.

  19. I wouldn't have known that the paint was worn had you not pointed it out. Beautiful plate, in any event!

  22. Vee,
If it's a dish, and it's old, and it belonged to someone in our family. . .it stays!!! Imperfections are unique characteristics! Grandma must of loved it, right?
I think your photos are amazing!!!
    Fondly,

  23. I love your "Monet" and yes, I have such pieces - too many in fact! I have a collection of green depression glass that fills approx. 1/3 of my antique (mom's) china cabinet. I do use a few pieces on occasion but I just couldn't part with them for anything - love, love, green dishes!!!! Great pictures Vee!

  25. O, dear...I have parted with things I thought I would take with me to the hereafter...moving does that to you. I have closed my eyes tight and dropped things into Goodwill box that I am sure, in the end, I will try to buy it back from them...:)

  26. Even on your worst day your posts are inspiring.

Nope, don't eat from the plate! Which, by the way, is lovely.

    Love,

  27. This would be a "keeper" in my house!
Sadly, I haven't got anything that belonged to my grandmother.
Ilove the colors and the vintageness (a word? probably not but you know what I mean) of your plate Vee.
My mother was one of seven girls and one brother, I think the others got to the goodies first!
I always love your posts and the way you chat to us thank you Vee!!
    Wishing you a happy weekend
there is a little touch of Autumn in the air late this afternoon!

    1. Forgot to answer your question...

Yes, I have old, imperfect things that I am loathe to part with. The first that comes to mind is the tea set that once belonged to my great-grandmother. (You can see parts of the set in this post... http://thinking-about-home.blogspot.com/2011/10/31-days-to-make-house-home-day-25-use.html). Several of the teacups have missing or repaired handles. One of the serving plates has obviously been glued back together. The lid to the teapot is very yellowed. But I wouldn't part with it!

  29. This plate does have a Majolica look to it! I think that style was very popular int he 30's and 40's.

It was so hard to move as i had to give up some of my old and chipped "treasures," but I did take way too many as it is. I'm very sentimental. I told my husband that packing all my stuff after living 36 years in one house was like examining my entire life. It got very emotional at times!

  30. I hope you won't let this interesting old plate go - it is truly une belle laide!

  31. What a great plate to have! I love a chippy piece that you know has a history ... even if you cant serve on it anymore. =)

    Have a great weekend!

  32. I don't know, Vee, it looks beautiful to me! =) you just never know when you'll see 'Country Living' snagging something like this and knowing just what to do with it! ;) But, all that doesn't matter because it belonged to your Grandmother. How wonderful!!!

Vee, I wonder what they would say about this on one of those 'road show antique' show-thingy-programs? Seriously!

    Best wishes!

    xxo

  33. I agree with Katy - it's lovely all worn and loved. I have some yellow ware that's cracked and Mr OP is always saying "why don't you just get rid of it?"

  34. It's beautiful, Vee....It reminds me of a dish my grandmother had that was a tobacco leaf pattern in similar greens and I wish I had it now!

  35. Virginia Creeper leaf? That's a lovely dish ~ so much detail. Yes, I have a dish that belonged to my great grandmother that I'm unable to part with. I'm sure my kids won't have the same sentimental issues, but that's okay. I won't know.

  36. My entire house is filled with "imperfect" things! Not only do I refuse to part with them, I love living with them. They are filled with memories and their very imperfections speak to me of a life well-lived. :)

    Love your maybe-Majolica! xoxo
