A Haven for Vee

Late Summer

For the man sound of body and serene of mind there is no such thing as bad weather; every day has its beauty, and storms which whip the blood do but make it pulse more vigorously. ~George Gissing

~Late Summer Mosaic~

Hmmmm... Apparently, I am not serene of mind nor sound of body. It was a foul autumn in 2012; winter was vile; it was a truly rotten spring; summer was not so great either. What does it mean when the entire year was a weather bust?

It's why I am so looking forward to autumn 2013 and hoping for better weather ahead, both figuratively and literally.

Moving on to more cheery thoughts—have you tried these? Brownie Brittle they're called and so good, if you enjoy the crunchy bits of brownies, which I do. Six of these squares equal a serving for a total of 120 calories. One might, if she were very good, get away with eating just one and it would be enough chocolate to last for a few minutes. ☺ (No, I am not being compensated in any way to say this. We just tried them and we like them. Pssttt... Brownie Brittle people, you can send a case to Vee in Maine. Thank you.)

Those wondering how the rules will shake down for the note card party should check the new rules soon to be posted on the Note Card Party page, which can be reached by clicking on either the date in my sidebar for the Note Card Party or on the button also in my sidebar. I think everyone will be happy or nearly everyone will be happy. I know that I'm happy! No, really. I am happy.

~not my house~

Leaving you with a photo of some beautiful window boxes. They're not as fine as they were in August as they are becoming a bit leggy, but still so pretty on yesterday afternoon's drive home from the apple orchard. Soon the lady of the house will be decorating for autumn with pumpkins and bittersweet...then Christmas with evergreens and pine cones, but don't let me get ahead of myself.

A marvelous new week to you...

  2. I love the quote Mr Gissing wrote, but feel he must be the only person who has never complained about the weather. Weather seems to be the one topic that most of us know something about.~smile. I have been looking forward to seeing your morning glory mailbox. You are probably going to have fall decorations up before I do, as I will be knee deep, or is that feet deep in grapes this week. lol
looking forward to reading the new rules, for the Notecard party any way is fine with me.
I am for anything that is chocolate and low in calories, must check these out.
    Enjoy your day.
    Hugs,

    That is a beautiful home.

  4. Will Rogers said, "If you don't like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it'll change." The only thing I don't like about Oklahoma weather is tornado season. We had a bad one this past spring. I'm looking forward to crisp autumn days. My favorite!
The brownie brittle looks amazing! Yum!

  7. I've seen the brownie brittle at Costco, but haven't tried it.

We are eagerly anticipating Autumn - it's been a weird weather year here too!

    Have a wonderful day!

  9. Never even heard of the Brownie Brittle. Sounds decadent!;>) It has been an odd year here, too. I feel like I got cheated out of summer a bit. Gonna be HOT and HUMID here today again. I am not quite ready for Autumn yet though even though it is my favorite season- xo Diana

  10. Brownie brittle sounds like something that can't be bad! :)

Those window boxes are beautiful! Our window boxes? Pathetic. Ron pulled everything out of one of them last week. I didn't even care. I am ready to fill them with gourds anyway!

  12. I sure hope your Fall is a wonderful season. It's my least favorite but I am determined to make it good this year. New rules? Sounds like FUN! Sweet hugs my friend!

  13. Brownie Brittle? Sounds like a crunchy delight! I wonder if they are a regional thing because I've never heard of them.

The grand Maine home is beautiful! Gosh, I love the vintage architecture up there where you live! Beautiful, just beautiful.

And I'm scampering off to peek at the new note card party rules. I still don't think I can see my way clear of participating this month, with our lives being turned upside down and inside out.

  14. I'll have to check our Costco for Brownie Brittle, sounds yummy. However, US & Canadian Costco stores don't always carry the same things. I can't even buy Susan Branch's new book at Chapters because we don't get releases until several months after you. Relevant Tea Leaf, a blog I follow showed photos of the book signing she attended for A Fine Romance. My gift cards can wait until we catch up with the times. :-)

  15. OK..I am going to look at the note card party and see if I can't pull something together this time around.
    The brownies sound really yummy.

  16. I like that quote as I have been wondering if I enjoy all kinds of weather because I'm older now, or if I always did. I think age is a factor. On the other hand, you have had some bad seasons and I'm sure I would tire of enjoying bad weather quickly. What a beautiful house and window boxes! I would enjoy driving by there!

  17. I heard on a weather forecast already that there is speculation the "color" in Upper New England will not be as good this year due to all the rain.

We are in the midst of a heat wave with record or near record 90+ degree temps continuing now through Wednesday. Then highs in the 70s will return at least for awhile. It has been a very odd weather year and my garden did not appreciate it at all.

    1. Oh uggg...that's not good. I know that there is very little color yet...the barest blush on a few trees.

  18. Brownie Brittle looks good, maybe they will send a case to me? (rofl)--beautiful window boxes & beautiful house. Have a great Monday. Blessings

  19. I shall look for those Brownie Brittles!
I was awake at 7 this morning - early for me! It was ONLY 78 degrees! I hurried outside in my cotton gown and planted 3 mums I have had for a couple of weeks and kept meaning to plant but just watered them instead because it was so hot! I planted and pulled weeds and sweated! Then I cleaned up and went back to bed for a little while to read and contemplate my day. Hope YOU have a grand one. I loved the pic of that white house....it just looks so clean!

  20. Brownie Brittle you say? Hmmm, I'll have to keep my eye out next time I'm at the store. Maybe if I keep both eyes out I'll finally start losing some weight. We are in a foggy morning pattern here and are threatened with an over 90 degree Wednesday, Oye! Hope you have a lovely week, Vee!

  21. Brownie Brittle sounds delicious I need to remember that.
    Have a fabulous Monday.

  22. Thanks for sharing that Brownie Brittle! I will be on the look out for that! xo

  23. Hmmmm. I think our weather, while not really good, might have been a little better than yours, Vee. I am hoping for a glorious fall, too. But I've heard that our winter will be tough. Still, I always hope those forecasters don't know all they're talking about!

Sigh.....No Brownie Brittle for me. It doesn't look friendly to my way of low carb eating and it also looks so good that I'm safer not giving it house room!

  24. I haven't heard of Brownie Brittle. Sounds pretty good.

I've always loved that style house in your photo. I'd especially love the screened-in porch. But, sigh, when one gets older, one doesn't want to walk up and down stairs so, if we ever move again, we'll be looking for everything on one floor.

    Have a nice week!

  25. I have never tried Brownie Brittle but I know I would love it!

Fall is definitely in the air. The cool nights are almost here. We had one last week and I wanted to break out my flannels. It's time to get ready for soup weather.

  26. My husband says (he read it somewhere) that there's no bad weather, just bad clothing. He tells me that when I don't want to go for a walk in the rain but know that I should. I don't quite believe him at times.

Oh, I hope your autumn is a beautiful one, Vee. You've certainly had enough weather of the lousy sort. Are September's golden days upon you this week? They are here. Sending sunshine your way.

    ReplyDelete
  27. We are enjoying our 'late summer' weather. The forecast for the entire week is sunny and hot. Sorry we can't share it as we see fit!

New rules? I guess I better take note.

  28. I didn't comment on the Note Party rules as I haven't played, I think tho I'm going to join you. Ooh, those Brownie Brittle's look very tasty. You're so right about the weather this year, right now we are back into the 90's and hopefully it will break in the next few days. I sure hope this fall will be a good one.

  29. What a pretty mosaic. I love the soft edges.
I've never had Brownie Brittle but it sure looks good. I like the calorie count too. : )
We had a delightful summer here in western Md.

  30. Never heard of Brownie Brittle - but they sound wonderful:)

Love the "white house" shot. So clean and tidy looking.

  31. Mmm those brownie Brittles look good - wonder if they are available here in Canada eh? Love your "small print" - too funny!! Some day I will take time to figure out the note card party - I'll have a look right now.

  32. Well, I had a nice long comment and lost it. Ugh. I like your mosaic with the foggy spacing and edges. Nice edit. Yes, we had a lousy weather year but September seems to be fair so far. May it continue for 2 more months! The big white house is a beauty and I think you should photograph it each season for us to see. :) Chocolate anything is good and these morsels look delicious. Only in the US? So sad. Maybe I'll look for them on our next visit at the end of the month. Yep. We're coming down to the coast. I'll fill you in soon.

  33. I haven't heard of Brownie Brittle but it sounds good. I'll have to look for it.
I'm hoping for a nice fall too as the weather hasn't been the best this year. Here's hoping for a nice long, colorful fall.

  34. So sorry you've not had very good weather....ours has been very nice...had a lot more rain this year than last...no tornadoes around our town...the sand storms in spring were bad but that is always the case out here in West Texas. Our low 90's and high 80's right now are wonderful.
Fall is nearly always really nice here. Not many trees to change colors but the weather itself is awesome.
Just hang on...your autumn should be really nice. :))
