A Haven for Vee

It Was Definitely a Muffin Day

Three and a half hours later, we still had not figured those lights out. At that point, I mentioned strawberry muffins and John said, "Sure!" I used a Mennonite Gal's recipe (Kathy's) for *Blueberry Crumble Muffins* minus the blueberries and crumble. Instead, I put a generous dollop of strawberry jam in the center. Very tasty.

So there she still sits unadorned and looking pitiful. We had planned to fetch lights this morning; however, the weather just isn't cooperating. My niece was here last night using her powers of setting things to rights and it proved even too difficult for her. No, she is not a fairy godmother; She is just great with all things electrical...usually.

The rest of the aprons showed up! I am learning to be grateful for small successes these days.

Even the apothecary is filling slowly.

All is coming together, but really, Christmas is soooo very close that I am feeling the nerves.

Okay, are we down here far enough? Oh those people? Lesley Ann Warren and her prince from the 1965 version of Cinderella. Yes, I am old enough to remember that program well. I don't know what night of the week it aired, but I do remember being allowed to watch and enjoying it very much. I always thought that Lesley was so very pretty and I still do.

So dare we discuss The Sound of Music? I'll go first. I had company for the first bit so wasn't watching closely; I dozed there for fifteen minutes or so; I tried not to compare any of the players to the movie actors or the story itself to the movie, but wound up doing so anyway. In the end, one was a movie and the other a stage production and quite a remarkable one at that so comparing wasn't fair. I'd have to say that it lacked a certain pizzazz for me, but I still found the final scenes gripping. The stresses of that time always make an impression on me.

If you'd like, you can scroll through photos of the live performance *here.*

What did you think?

  1. The saga of the lights...sigh. (We had our own "lights" story here yesterday...resulting in the fact that I am going to have to return a small pre-lit tree today. Boo.)

No cable TV...no Sound of Music last night. But Cinderella (known here as the "White Cinderella"...as opposed to Disney's "Blue Cinderella") is a longtime favorite. My sister and I would watch it every year, and then act it out for days afterward, taking turns being Cinderella of course. We knew long bits of dialogue verbatim, as well as every pause, expression, and twirl! And, oh, the music...swoon!

    2. The lights worked for two days. Crazy. On day three, they were dark...still plugged in, but not one light. We changed the fuses and tightened the bulbs. Nothing.

  2. I recorded The Sound of Music and I haven't watched it yet. I am saving it for Sunday afternoon.
I remember Cinderella from 1965. My children were young then. It was a happy time.

  3. Do I dare say that I don't think I've ever watched "Cinderella"? I don't think I have. I would remember, wouldn't I?! We watched "Polar Express" last night. I love the music.

Those strawberry muffins are speaking to me. I just had an apple and oatmeal and was full. . .until I saw those strawberry muffins!

  4. Good morning! First, yes please to a strawberry muffin...I don't remember Cinderella, and I have The Sound of Music recorded. I am thinking tonight and I am soooooo excited, lol.. I love Carrie. I am thinking it won't really matter how good it is it will be worth it just to hear her sing. Good luck on those lights...sometimes they can just be so frustrating. Enjoy your day!

  5. I don't think I ever saw that Cinderella, and The Sound of Music will always mean Julie Andrews, to me.
I hope you're able to take a deep breath and enjoy these weeks before Christmas. The 24th will come whether or not we have all the things on our lists done - enjoy this time!

  6. I'm sure the yummy muffins helped with the stresses of the lights dilemma. My trees are still not decorated. I was busy decorating other spaces yesterday.

Yes, I remember Cinderella, I loved it! I also loved last night's The Sound of Music. It was live. I felt like I was watching a stage performance in a theater. Carrie did a great job. I found myself shedding tears during Climb Every Mountain. Carrie was showing true emotion. I also cried at the end. The whole Nazi thing really got to me.

    Smiles,
    Carol

  8. I am with you, Vee. It just lacked something and I am not sure what. I did enjoy it though.

  9. I wish I could say I watched The Sound Of Music, but Earl would feel the same way about that as he does about Dancing with The Stars...he prefers to have his teeth pulled to watching. Maybe I can find it on HULU? Your aprons are so pretty, love the tartan red:>) Are the lights built into your tree? I have contemplated getting an artificial tree, but I would have to hoard replacement lights on strings because I have always been convinced that the prelit tree would some day let me down by only partially lighting.
I do remember Cinderella, I LOVED that show when I was little. Such a treat to watch it:>)

  10. I hope the saga of the lights is soon ended, for your sake, not for ours - it's entertaining when it's not personal.
No cable so we didn't watch. I often find that remakes or adaptations leave something unsatisfied, especially in such a wonderful movie as The Sound of Music.
Christmas will come whether you are "ready" or not. Let your heart take the lead.

  11. I feel asleep during the Sound of Music, but caught up with it this morning. I really liked it and thought they did a great job. I remember going to see the movie and buying the album way back when... oh the memories!
We had a nice storm here in Dallas and we're stuck inside, but kinda nice to slow down! Happy weekend, Vee. xo

  12. Vee, I could not even think of watching The Sound of Music last evening. It is one of my all time favorites and I was afraid they would ruin it. I've seen it on stage and always compare it to the original movie. Hope you are able to solve the light problem. ♥

  13. First, those muffins look wonderful. I am drinking a cup of coffee right now and would love one!

I do remember that Cinderella. I loved that movie. And I did enjoy Sound of Music last night. It is hard to compare the two, I enjoy each of them.

  15. We PVR'd The Sound of Music last night, so hopefully we will get around to watching it sometime soon. I'll weigh in on the pro's and con's after that. I'm laughing at your MGCC blueberry streusel muffins...without the blueberries and without the streusel. (I'm thinking we got all your blueberries and streusel when we were there, right?) They sound fabulous...even 'without'! Hubby is out buying more lights to fill in the gaps on the 'front porch' tree. One of these days we'll just be sitting in our chairs and enjoying our trees. LOL

    1. How odd! That's just what John is up to this afternoon. I hope to have that tree decorated tonight!

  16. Why is it that Christmas lights can try the best of people? Glenn refuses to put them up outside any more after stringing the new LED lights on the market a few years ago that last hours and hours. Right, within a few days lights were burned out and the individual bulbs were not replaceable; hopefully they are now. I put up the silver 4' tinsel tree, decorated it and plugged in the cord - the bottom third didn't light! He went around taking each tiny bulb out and replacing it, knocking many of the decorations off. Why did I decorate it before I tried the lights he asked. Well, if it worked last year when I unplugged it, shouldn't it still work this year? There it sits, each night with a flick of the switch and the bottom still in darkness. It's staying that way. ;-)
I too PVR'd The Sound of Music and will likely watch it tonight.

  17. I enjoyed it. I liked how the casting folks tried to find actors who resembled the original ones. Cannot really compare. A film with a live production, but they did a decent job. Carrie Underwood is no Julie Andrews, but really, who is?

  18. We had a saga of one strand of missing lights this year, what is it with Christmas lights? I suppose the Grinch spirited them away. As soon as the ice melts I am off to get a new strand o replace the missing ones so the top third of the tree can be lit. I am in excellent company, my tree is not decorated either but it is not bothering me much, I have just plugged it in anyway and bask in its 2/3's glow...lol.

Wishing you a happy, healthy, and joyful Christmas season Vee!

  21. I know I'm certainly old enough but I don't remember the show Cinderella at all.
I thought The Sound of Music was very good and enjoyed singing a lot of the songs too. Though Ken wasn't so impresses with my singing. : )

  22. Well, phooey on those lights! I bet it is just one light that has burned out, so the whole string is out. The muffins sound good. I remember the Cinderella show - just barely, LOL. And I didn't watch the latest Sound of Music production. We haven't been watching too much TV for many weeks now, since we've been having to get up early for appointments. Ah, it's going to be so nice to sleep in again...

  23. Your muffins look yummy and using the oven on cold days makes such a difference. I know you are anxious to get the lights on...hope you get it figured out soon...or get new ones. I thought about the show when it was halfway through so I didn't try to start watching it late. Maybe I should have watched the last scenes. Enjoy your weekend my friend! Stay warm!

  24. I do think your muffins will help lessen the frustration of dealing with the Christmas lights. At least I hope so.
We finally have the tree lit up and are hoping it stays that way until the ornaments are on. We are now having fun trying to replace burned out electric candle lights. Brett has been all over town looking and it seems none of the stores got them in this year. Odd and frustrating.
We have recorded the Sound of Music. I can't imagine it will measure up to the original.
I sure don't remember that Cinderella program, but I do love Lesley Ann Warren.

  25. It was visually so beautiful … and the music of course was good, but like you said, it lacked something and I think that was the quality of the acting, I kept reminding myself it was a musical, based on the original, not the movie, and maybe what impressed me the most was that it was live. I only saw one goof and that was in the beginning when she lost her footing ever so briefly running down the small hill. It's amazing to contemplate all the work that went into it.

  26. Those muffins sound wonderful and I can understand your mess with the stupid prelit tree. I had to put all new lights on my prelit tree this year. GRRRRR!
I missed the Sound Of Music-there was so much going on here. I am hoping they air it again- xo Diana

  27. I didn't see it but I hope to sometime. It is always so hard when a beloved movie/musical/stage production is redone.

I hope your light issue gets resolved! I'm loving our tree. I think I say that every year.

  30. Hi Vee

I had to work late that night and missed it. the drive home was horrible, rain and fog so bad I was totally stressed by the time I got home, plus my shoulder was throbbing so i took a hot shower and went to bed.

I do see that they have it to view on demand, not sure if I'll get around to watching it or not. I'm not really one for re-makes.

Hope that you are enjoying all the joys of the season:)
