February Vacation Story

...Come when the rains
Have glazed the snow and clothed the trees with ice,
While the slant sun of February pours
Into the bowers a flood of light.

~William Cullen Bryant

Sometimes the boys will ask why this photo or that lands here on the blog; they asked about these. It came down to something as simple as the color of a hat against the snow and the story told.

Jake needs a more colorful hat and that's all there is to that! ☺

~John Takes to the Luge~

 ~Pitching Potatoes~

When life gives you 10 pounds of sprouted potatoes, one should use them for something!
The lost potatoes, purchased for Christmas dinner, were found last Saturday in John's closet under a pile of work pants. The potatoes were ready for planting (none had yet rotted...phew!) so I've had the boys chuck a few over the banking every time we go to our sledding hill. Great fun!

Have a fine weekend...

~that's all, Folks~

  1. Your John is a great sport to try that - will he be ready for a place on the US Luge team in the next Olympics!!!!!!?
It did look like a lot of fun - what snow - haven't seen any like that since I live in Mass. back in the sixties!
Great pics of those really cute boys - pink cheeks and smiles really make Winter seem healthy and fun.

  3. I would do that in a New York Minute. Looks like so much fun. That's what I miss most about the winters I used to know. Not this overbearing hot stuff in January and February.

  4. This photos certainly relate to the adage..."when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!" Lots of fun in the snow and I guess when I was younger I would have enjoyed this much snow, but not now; I'm a wimp:-D XOXO

  8. How fun! Cheryl is my inspiration for grandparenting while still having young children in the home, but you are an inspiration to me about grandparenting in general!

  10. You found the potatoes! Now it's a wonder how did they end up where they did? I knew potatoes have eyes but legs is a new one. I'm storing the knives away from their reach henceforth. [suspiciously eyeing our potatoes] ~:)) *giggle*

Love the green and blue one against the snow and the fact that's it's my Sounders Soccer team colors adds to the fun of seeing it in the snow! Have a great day!

  16. Love the video. Nothing like the sound of giggling boys. What a sport John is to give it a try. Love the pictures. Glad you found something to do with the potatoes, and super glad you found them before they rotted. I have experienced that before and believe me when I say, it's nothing I ever want to experience again. ~ Abby

  26. Wonderful photos...and too funny about the potatoes. I always wondered where they'd turn up. LOL

    Love your new current header.

  27. We woke up to snow this morning, but it's nothing like yours. I'd jump on the sled and go down that track in a minute! Love the prayer and John's enthusiasm. The first series of photos is a lovely photo essay of one of the joys of youth. Love the colors and action.
So glad the potatoes turned up. I would venture that if they had started to rot, you'd have found them sooner - such a terrible odor!

  29. Yay, John!! (I loved, "Say a prayer.") :D

Sam's hat does make for a great snow picture! Maybe you can find an end-of-season clearance hat for Jake so you'll be all ready for next winter. (Isn't it funny how we begin to see details like that because we blog?)

The potatoes have been found! It may not be as exciting as the lost sheep or the lost coin...but your readers are all glad for some resolution! We were worried about those potatoes, weren't we? :D

  32. Those are great photos taken in the snow. You are right-it is the hat color and pink cheeks that MAKE those pictures. John was a little slow on the take off there but once he took off he really went. lol
Where else did you expect to find those potatoes? You already knew they weren't in the pantry! lol xo Diana

  39. Your grandsons enjoy the snow so much! I was the same as a child. Snow was always the best plaything I could think of at their age.
