~Mother's Quilt Top~
All of Donna's challenges present one for me. This time was no different as there is nearly zero color out of doors —— certainly no riot of color in the garden. It's a bland, bland May. I was explaining this to Donna and she came up with suggestions. I remembered the quilt top folded in a bottom dresser drawer that my mother was making for herself from all the scraps that had gone into the quilts she had made for others. I've always thought of it as an intriguing combination of colors.
First I resize rarely using more than 700 width. If a photo nearly fills the page when opened, that is good enough for me; I am also frugal and don't wish to pay for storage space.
Next I used the free program Photoscape to bump contrast and to sharpen. This time, I pushed the colors further with color enhance. Both photos were taken on the macro setting. I used a Nikon Coolpix P7100 on Auto Setting.

Beautiful color here....
ReplyDeleteHave a great Mothers Day.
Wow, very colorful and pretty. Love it. Blessings
ReplyDeleteThese are both so different but good examples of the color that surrounds us. I like the black and white in the background...the colors really pop! And a quilt is oh so comforting...year round comfort! Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteI love the dice and the color on both are wonderful. Once again I wished I had more time to learn more from you. Have a colorful weekend.
ReplyDeleteThose are great shots, Vee!! Of course the quilt top is so warm and cozy looking, but I've always liked colorful dice. When I was teaching my kids, I had dice of many colors and many facets. Now the grandkids play with them. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! (Yeah, our May is pretty bland too. Hoping all this rain will make things pop pretty soon!)
ReplyDeleteI love the colourful dice and your mother's quilt top. What a treasure the quilt is to have Vee. I had to dig deep for photos for this challenge. It'll be fun to see the other links.
ReplyDeleteYou found some great color in your world!
ReplyDeleteI'd say you more than met this challenge. The dice on the black and white check and your precious quilt top. Wonderful, Vee!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos, and I appreciate the editing tips. Have you thought about getting your mother's quilt top finished?
ReplyDeleteLove that quilt top, beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love color! It energizes me.

Your colour enhancing techniques have wonderful results Vee!! I could learn so much here. Love, love the quilt top - are you planning to finish it sometime? I just had one of mine machine quilted and am quite happy with the way it turned out - just need to bind it now and hang it in my hallway!! Here's wishing you lots and lots of colour this Mother's Day weekend :).
ReplyDeleteHappy and bright colors, Vee :) Have a blessed Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteLove your colors and the two entries . Happy Mothers day!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful mothers quilt..have a blessed mothers day

Beautiful choices for color! And wishing you a happy mother's day. {Are you really afraid of running out of room. I've started posting higher res photos remembering you suggested I have plenty of room. :-) But I have no clue what I really have.} Hope your spring turns to color soon.
ReplyDeleteGoogle Picasa Web Albums...your blog will be there when you click on...scroll to the bottom of the page and it will tell you how much space you are using.
DeleteLovely colors in the photos. Things are finally showing signs of spring here and it is about time too.
ReplyDeleteAll the colourful dice make me think there are some good games being played with the grands. Quilts are just plain comforting, and this old fashioned pattern with the squares would be wonderful to cozy up under.
ReplyDeleteGreat poem and your photo goes perfect with it! The quilt reminds me that I have three waiting to be made, so I better get busy, XOXO
ReplyDeleteOh Vee...these are both so beautiful...I especially like the black & white checks making this primary colors POP!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteThe dice and quilt both are very colorful and so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThat photo of dice is one of my favorites. So striking. Bumping up the color really intensified the effect. The quilt is an entirely different take on color, with the colors blending more. Both are wonderful. Hopefully the bland May will turn, all of a sudden, into a colorful May.
ReplyDeleteLove the dice photo! I should challenge myself with my photos also!!
ReplyDeleteGreat colorful photos, Vee, and I loved the poem. Thanks for sharing the link.
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day. xo
What a treasure to have your mother's quilt! I love the bright colored dice.
ReplyDeleteGostei muito das fotos que você escolheu!
ReplyDeleteParabéns!
Um abraço!
I really enjoyed the photos you chose!
Congratulations!
Hugs!
I adore color! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBoth are striking uses of color in photography! I love the vivid colors in the dice shot. But the quilt top is also quite colorful. I find it interesting to see how well the colors are blending...colors that I would never have thought to use together. Your mother must have really had an eye for such things.
ReplyDeleteHow very clever of you. Colorful dice! I love both photos!
ReplyDeleteOk, now you're on a subject completely over my head. *lol* I'm not good at internet design. I'm glad someone can do it. Nice poem. Music touches our soul. It influences our actions too. That's why it's so important to always listen to something that brings peace. Beethoven's music is the one that really reaches me. When I listen to his compositions I feel like I'm floating on a happy cloud. It's a real gift to give such beautiful feelings to others. ~:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty colourful quilt your Mother has made!
ReplyDeleteYou sure aced the challenge.
The dice make an interesting picture -- unexpected somehow. I also like the colour combinations in your mother's quilt. You never know what will happen when you dive into the scrap bag. I hope your bland May brightens soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm so enjoying all the popping colours I'm seeing all over bloggyland today! Things aren't looking drab at all from this perspective!
ReplyDeleteBoth of these photos would make pretty note cards, Vee! Donna's photo challenges's sound so interesting--I hope to have chance to join in one day.
ReplyDeletePS: we are supposed to get snow on Mother's Day! It seems it has to snow at least one day in May in Colorado
I heard that! And not just a little either, right?
DeleteThee colors of the dice give a real punch!
ReplyDeleteBut your mother's quilt stirs up lovely emotions for me.
Did you watch her stitch it Vee?
What a treasured memory of her.
I have a lace tablecloth my mother made - I can still see her sitting in her chair, with crochet hook in hand and patiently working away little by little until it was finished.
Happy Mothers Day.

Love the mulit-color di...dice...anyway, they're fun! The quilt top is beautiful; love quilts, too! Isn't it amazing the way colors work together?
ReplyDeleteYou are quite welcome, and thank you for acknowledging my efforts. If I can help folks have more photographic confidence and change their thinking about subject matter, then my work is worthwhile.
ReplyDeleteLove the collection of colorful dice, and the checked background further emphasizes the square shapes. The color is really rich in that photo, so it benefited greatly from the digital enhancement. And the quilt is so adorable. You mother knew that the addition of dark fabrics assist in creating color contrast, making the other colors stand out more. I'm so glad that you thought of sharing your keepsake with us!
The dice shot is great- so colourful and graphic withe square shapes repeated in the black and white tablecloth. I would never have thought of that, of course all my dice are black and white....
ReplyDeleteOf course being a quilter, I love the quilt too and there's nothing nicer than a scrap quilt. It's as comforting as hot chocolate on a cold winter's night. Your Mom knew what she was doing - she has a nice variety of colors but also values - that's what makes a successful quilt. Lovely choices Vee! Great colours!
Love those Dice- and how they contrast with the quilt top- bold and graphic in one and soft in the other- but both squares essentially.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Vee and some good tips here. Love that quilt.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Vee! I love the colorful dice shot.. And the quilt is lovely.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a Happy Mother's Day and week ahead!
The vibrant colors really pop. Love it!
