Snack Mats

For whatever reason, the grands enjoy using snack mats. I know why I like them — they save on paper towels and washing plates. When I saw *Stephanie's most excellent tutorial,* I decided to make a couple more.

In typical fashion, I did not use the same number of fabrics nor all the same size pieces. I did start with a five-inch block that I also changed up. The pinwheel looked too busy with my fabrics. My plaids are not matching...oh well! Click through to The Enchanting Rose to see the differences in design and fabric choice. If your fabric scrap pile is growing, this is a fun project. If I keep practicing, I may be able to have the placemats that I've really been wanting to make.

It is Memorial Day Weekend in the U.S. and I have some yard work and garage work to do before Monday. I think I may begin with the washing of windows and screens from the looks of these.

A blessed weekend to you...

  2. I love the little vase in the screen.
Your house always looks so gorgeous and pristine clean.
Living in a small old farm house with animals everywhere , seems everything is always getting tracked in and dust is always a wafting ~ clean and pristine is a goal that I try to achieve but it never quite gets there . lol

  5. Very cute! I love your choice of fabrics as they seem so "Maine"! I'll bet the grands feel like these are special...beyond the ordinary of simple plates. Anyone can have a plate! Do you have a collection of these?

  10. Hey Vee, those are great! What's with all you ambitious folk out there? Now I know for sure that I'm a sloth at heart. It's so much easier to get out the camera than it is to get out the sewing machine. But you've reminded me that I could actually go wash the dog nose prints off the window seat window! That would be a start. Have a wonderful weekend..

  11. Your snack mats are really cute and a great idea for kiddos to use (and some adults!). I like your pretty bouquet in the window which doesn't look dirty to me. ;) I did my windows last Monday so I'm good to go but I wish the weather would warm up so I can enjoy the fresh air more. I hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday weekend. xo

  12. Fun...your snack mats! What caught my eye was the print wee floral print. I sewed a casserole cover in the late 70's using that print and a matching bright yellow print. Still have it. Still use it on occasion. Enjoy your holiday weekend!

  13. Neat and tidy idea - I love using less water or tossing away paper or plastic. Sustainable and washable and adorable - well done, lady.

Isn't this weather AWESOME? We have perfect weather and I am going back out in it right now, so so rare around here. Hugs and love.

  14. Love the idea of snack mats! Glad the grands like them, too. I was just looking at a groupon special for washing windows....really tempted.
We cut a tree down today that racoons were using to get on our roof. Next on the agenda is barbecuing steaks at 4:00. Blessings on the rest of your weekend.

  15. I just posted. Where did it go? This keeps happening to me, and it's ticking me off.

Had more to say the first time, but I loved it. That's all I'll say now.

Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

  17. Are snack mats the same as a place mat, or smaller because you're not eating as much? The weather is good this weekend for outdoor work and I wish you an enjoyable Memorial Day celebration Vee.

    1. These are about half the size of a placemat. I think snack mats/mug rugs can be any size one likes. We have yet to see good weather...perhaps by tomorrow...every day is showery...lots of rain...the sun peeks out for a minute...back to rain.

  28. Hello Vee,
Thanks for stopping by. I love the mats. I never thought of those. What a grand idea. Of course, yours are super pretty. You sure chose a hard job of cleaning screens.I would not tackle that myself at this moment in time. But it will have to be done.
Have a Blessed Day and your post honoring our fallen was just wonderful,

  29. Hi Veg

We're back from our 8 days in California. The wine country area was so pleasant but San Francisco was cold! :) Your snack mats are a great idea! My grandsons are messy eaters and a mat like this would catch all their spills.Hope you had a good Memorial Day Weekend.
