Mother Makes the Front Page

Yesterday afternoon, while visiting with my mother and grandmother over a cup of Crème brûlée coffee (delicious!), my mother asked, "Did you know that your mother made the front page?" (My mother often speaks of herself in the third person.) Well, no. No, I had not. John dug out the paper from the recycling bin this morning. I hope that we can be forgiven for having missed it.

Apparently, last Veteran's Day (a week ago) filled with honors and activities finally got her the acclaim that she so well deserves. She's been following my dad around for years so I find it amusing that she makes the photo and he, who is obviously seated to her right behind all those who are standing, does not. Geeze, I hope that he wasn't on his keister during the flag review. :D

Oh, can't see the picture so well? *Here's* a much better look.

Edited to Add: Hahahaha, I just noticed the camera in her hand...she holds it like a teacup. Hahahahahaha...Mom, did you know that your daughter laughs at how you hold a camera?

Thank you to everyone who left a comment yesterday. I received good advice and lots of helpful tips. If you are considering a kitchen cabinet painting job, you might want to check them out.

Oh, I am waiting...I'll do a good scrubbing and perhaps give Lovella's and Jan's ideas a go. And a collective cheer was heard across Blogland...

  1. I love the way your mother holds a camera! She's one classy lady!!!!

Thanks for a great post. Sorry to miss dad, though.

  2. Oh boy. . .love this post. I had to smile remembering my mom with a camera. . .she rarely took our heads in with the shot. Who knows how she held the camera, certainly not correct. I think it is very cute that your mom refers to herself in 3rd tense. I find myself doing that with the grands, and thinking . . .really I shouldn't be doing this. . but hey, until they say my name, I'll remind them who I am, and then I'll probably be in such a rut, I'll start referring to myself in 3rd tense to everyone too.

Oh. . and I couldn't stop thinking about your kitchen yesterday.. busy body eh? I wonder what the paint is like underneath the wall paper. I was wondering if you carpenter knows how to tile a backsplash. I love the small rectangular tiles that are sort of retro and back again. I think it would look lovely with that style of cabinet.
And, after enlarging the picture as BIG as I could get it. . .I wanted to come over and help you sort what is really needed on your counter top. My dil is marvelous at doing this, may I bring her along?. . .snicker.
But, yes, I'm glad you are leaving the big job till after the holidays.

  3. Kudos to your mom! She's still "got it", doesn't she!

I think you're wise to wait on your cabinet painting - I would freak out trying to get it all ready before Thanksgiving. Besides, the fresh paint smell might not go with turkey & dressin'! Take care - Vickie

  4. Lovella, yes, I'd love to know! My kitchen works very efficiently for me, but it doesn't look so attractive. As long as she doesn't put my toaster away or any of my appliances...no place to put them!

  5. Vee,

You are so funny! I hope mother has a sense of humor or your grounded!

You are also an instigator! After that whole cabinet deal yesterday I started looking at mine and guess what I did this very morning? Mixed up some Murphy's wood soap and water and scrubbed away! Now that the outsides are clean, tomorrow I tackle all the insides and I am not even hosting this year!!!! (Have you ever read that book, "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie"? One thing leads to another!)

In case you are wondering what I am up to, I am up to my eyeballs in crazy that's what. I am on a manic "making stuff" spree so I am sharing a little of the love!

Have a good day doing whatever it is you are doing!

  6. Oh Vee, I'm really smiling here. When my dil showed up at my house for the decluttering of my household and the subsquent packing away of needless clutter I was held at bay while she systematically took EVERYTHING out of every cabinet and closet and said to each item .. .tell me the truth, do you really need 3 of this? I would sheepishly say. . .I like three, and then two would end up on the to go pile. And now, I have everything fitting in my cabinets, but hey its crazy how I can accumulate things when she isn't looking.

  7. Omigosh, how people love having their picture on the front page of the newspaper! When I worked at the local paper people would come in and buy 50 copies if their picture appeared. As for the employees, if it was a slow news day you just might end up on the front page yourself.

She's very cute with her "teacup" hold on the camera.

  8. Hi Vee!
Great photo of your Mom on the click here! That's so humorous that your dad didn't make the picture.
I'll be looking forward to seeing your new kitchen cabinets and what color you've chosen. It makes such a huge difference! We had dark oak cabinets that were boring and made our north facing kitchen so depressing. I painted them cream and antiqued them and the kitchen came to life! Wes put beadboard on the ends of the cabinets to give it that cottage feel and trimmed it out with some beautiful decorative wood trim. I love it now!! I'll be looking so forward to your makeover!
    Hugs, Sherry
