A Little Schoolbus Story

Thank you for all the kind sympathies on my sports injury. One thing is sure, many of you have endured a stubbed toe at one time or another so you empathize very well. My stubbed toe is doing better: the swelling and redness is down by half; the colors are up by half; and I might be able to sleep by tonight.

~as yellow as a school bus~
So there the toe and I were standing beside the car waiting at the end of my son's drive for the school bus driver to stop the bus and let off the grands. John had graciously agreed to drive as I could not because of the sports injury.

The doors opened and off flew Sam, the driver put the bus in gear and drove away with a great roar of the engine. "Where's Jake?" I shrieked.

"Jake?"

"Jake!"

"Run up to Grammie's (other grandmother) and tell her that Jake did not get off the bus and that I forgot my phone (of all days). She'll know what to do." (It was pretty obvious that I didn't know what to do beyond yelling at the departing bus with my hands in the air. Even the toe was screaming.)

Off Sam zipped. Grammie knew exactly what to do and before the bus had reached the stop sign at the end of the street, it was turned around and heading back with our Jake.

I tell you. Some days are way more exciting than others. What was the problem? Seems Jake was "tricked" (his word) into believing what his little friend (with whom he was sitting) was planning — a play date. Right. All on their own. I don't know what the bus driver's excuse was. Actually, I do. He said that he didn't know that Jake was on the bus. ???

We had some minor discussions about this and I am certain that after their dad picked them up that there were major discussions about it. It may involve a change in plans. I hope not. I think Jake deserves another chance. I think Sam deserves another chance. I think Nonni deserves another chance. I even think that the bus driver deserves another chance, though this is the second time he's driven off with Jake.

Perhaps I should hold a sign at the end of that drive that reads: Sam AND Jake.

One thing I do know. Grammie deserves a medal!

  1. Grammies rock! And, I'm convinced, hold the world together. Thanks for the "yellow" report! ;)

  2. So glad your toe is healing, only those of us who have endured said injury know of this pain, as it seems every way we turn it gets hit, or stepped on.
I agree I think everyone deserves another chance, yes even the bus driver, after this incident I think his chances have run out, and Grammie gets a medal!
Having had two sons so close in age myself, I can only imagine the many times Sam and Jake will look back and remember this incident., and then it will be funny!
When I was around Jake's age this happened to me once as I was promised this grand play date with my girlfriend, needless to say there was a discussion too, a final discussion.
So glad everything was resolved so quickly, thanks for sharing.

  3. Sore bruised toes can hurt like the dickens can't they, amazing how such a little joint can cause such massive pain ... hope it lets up soon.
I am glad things turned out well with Jake . My favorite saying actually after a hectic time that turns out okay in the end " Alls well that ends well" Oh you had me smiling with the way you wrote this so well .

  4. Just imagine how boring your life would be without some kind of adventure every day! I think you should have hubby make a Sam AND Jake sign for you to hold, it would simplify things. :-)

  5. That would have frightened me for sure! Love the picture of the school bus yellow flower.

  6. Well, I know this was scary in the moment, but you have to admit that the retelling of it was comical, especially the part about the screaming toe.

Have I told you lately just how much I love the way you tell a story? Well, I'm telling you now.

  7. Great story, but I really love the photo! What a great shot of that beautiful violet!

  8. Wow! Quite the story! You'd think by May the driver would know what Kids got on and where they get off the bus everyday!

The boys should be forgiven, and another chance given, but that driver…hmmm.

Glad you didn't have to chase the bus down, and hurray for Sam's quick feet and Grammie's quick action!

  9. Yikes, that is a scary thing with all the weird stuff that goes on these days. I hope you and your toe have a better weekend. I'll have to remember the term 'sports injury.'. Take it easy on your poor toe.

  10. I'm so glad your toe is recovering! It's terrible when such painful things happen. But what a wild story about Jake and the day dreaming bus driver. That shouldn't happen, though it can. I sometimes wait for my grandson Nathan and always have a big sigh of relief when he comes off the bus! But so far, only he is on the bus. It will be three years until Stephen is, too since he missed the cutoff by six days.

  11. So glad Sam and Jake got back safely. I admire bus drivers they have a lot to deal with. Just read your stub toe post. I injured my toe by pushing it up against the bath tub when I began to take a sit-down bath after my knee surgery and that was the only way I could get out of the tub. That was 9 years ago and sad to say that toe still hurts to this day. It is the same injury football kickers get from kicking. Hope yours does better than that. Have a great week-end.

  12. Well in case I have never mentioned this before,. you DO tell such an entertaining story...your toe screaming out was hysterical! Yes, thank goodness grammy knew just what to do. I am curious how she did that though. Did she have a phone number to call the bus driver? And yes, another chance seems good, but let me tell you only 1 more for that bus driver, haha.. LOVE the sign idea,. lol. Enjoy your weekend Vee!

  14. I think, in my humble opinion, the sign and you (or hubby) should be out there. lol--how scary. So sorry about your toe. Blessings

  15. Having never had school bus transportation for myself or my kids I find your tale to be both amusing and cautionary. From job postings I note that school bus drivers make pretty close to minimum wage which considering they drive cargo of infinite worth is pretty amazing. Glad this story ended well!

  16. Now that is a freaky story! ~shudder~

How comforting to know that the Lord is watching over all...so thankful! (But to a parent/grandparent, that is still a freaky story!)

but, you sure did have an interesting day...

  19. That's way too much of an adrenaline rush for any day. Sounds as if you knew exactly what to do and it all turned out okay. I'm sorry about your foot, but smile when you mention your sports injury. What we grandparents get into!!

  20. I would go for the second chance too. The world's not perfect and there was no danger. Oh, do, make the sign! I think that would be a big hit. It would be hilarious. BTW, my two new wild and crazy Jack Russell Terrierists brothers are named Sam and Jack. Coincidence? *giggle* [I know it's not "Jake" but it's close!] ~:)

    1. PS: If I ever decide to start my own Indian Tribe (we may all have to do this for tax purposes to survive) we'll name you Chiefette Yellow Toe. You can even have an honorary feather in the shape of a toe. *snort* ~:)

  21. This must have been a heart stopping moment, Vee! I'm glad the other Grammie was able to stop the bus for Jake to get off. Id be nice if there was a bus monitor who had a list of who gets on and off where--many school districts have that now.

I stopped by last night to leave a comment on your stubbed toe post, but for some reason the comment did not go through. I have been having some trouble at times with WiFi here and last night I gave up and went to bed...lol I'm glad your toe is better and not broken! I will be traveling again for a week--San Francisco--one of my favorite places so I will catch up with you as soon as I return home. It's V's last official business trip and I did not want to miss it! PS: I don't believe in orbs either, but I thought it was a coincidental finding when I downloaded that photo! :)

  23. Maybe the bus driver likes Jake .LOL I always say there's not enough money in the world to get me to drive a school bus. YIkes. I love little kids to pieces, but they can make you want to tear your hair out at times. I was thinking as I read your post, that someone was going to step on your sore toe, and my stomach was hurting the whole time I read it. LOL. I hope it improves quickly. Blessings for agreat weekend, xoxo,Susie

  24. Sorry to hear about the stubbed toe., That is painful, I know that very well! Was that bus driver deaf? He needed to stop when he heard you screaming. And the grand making secret plans? No no no. Glad it tur ed out OK. Feel better. xo

  25. You do tell a enthralling story! So glad all turned out well and Jake was safely deposited.

  26. Glad all turned out well but it's heartbreaking when they are not where they should be even for a minute or two.

  27. All's well that end's well, I'm happy to hear. Everyone deserves another chance, including the bus driver. But you know what they say, 3 strikes and you're out! If it happened again, I'd file a complaint about him to the school board or whoever is in charge of the bus drivers. Hope your toe allows you to sleep well tonight!

  28. Yes,you do deserve a medal, Vee! I know all too well how painful the big toe injury can be. I hope the bus driver starts paying attention better.
    Enjoy your weekend. xxoo

  29. Well, that bus driver has one more strike and he's out.
    Glad all turned out well.

  30. You and The Great Dane would make a Matched Pair - he has a purple toe from trying to kick a post into place while wearing (really!||||||||||) sandals. I'll never, ever understand some things.
Pin a medal on Grammie and on yourself too - for the week you've had.

  31. Apparently the bus driver did not hear your screeches or see your flailing hands. Glad Jake was finally safely delivered. Your Nonnie stories are great fun.

  32. Omygoodness....heart failure....glad you got him back..:)

  33. I hope your sports injury is less painful and you can get a good nights sleep tonight!

  34. LOL- OMGosh!!!! Listen- you need to make a big cardboard placard and place it around Jake's neck that says DROP ME OFF AT (insert address). Then make sure he is sitting in the FRONT SEAT right behind the bus driver. That means you will have to print the message backwards so the bus driver can read it when he looks back in his mirror because we ALL KNOW-they never turn around! lol

Thank God you had your SPORTS INJURY otherwise you would have kicked that bus driver's butt. It was his LUCKY DAY! xo Diana

  35. Yes, you do deserve a nice gold medal Vee! Silly boys and their plans foiled again. lol I hope you have a quiet weekend. I think you deserve it. Hugs. Pam

  36. Vee, I would have been very scared. Good thing Sam can run fast and grannie new who to call. Hope things all get talked through and this won't happen again. Now....you take care of the toe!

  37. Sorry about your sports injury. I hope it is better today. I'm not sure I would give that bus driver another chance. Let's hope he doesn't forget Jake again.

  38. I am so sorry about your toe! I stubbed mine badly in 2012 and lost me toenail (after it turned black). Gosh, it took forever to grow back. So I know how sore and aggravating it can be! I hope the bus problem gets resolved. I think a report needs to be turned in on the bus driver.

We're having a rough week. Took Jim to the emergency room yesterday and they admitted him. Multiple blood clots in lung (result of cancer). Getting IV blood thinner. Has some heart damage too. Still being evaluated. Please pray.

  39. Wow, that's a lot of concentrated stress and panic in a short span of time. I'm glad you got Jake back and I'm sure his parents will give you another chance. Need to go back another post as I still don't know what happened to your toe.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh dear, I suppose it must be tough to be a bus driver and remember who gets off where, but still, that is the job! Glad everything turned out all right!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh...you have me laughing at your schoolbus story. I know it was no laughing matter at the time...but your telling of it certainly is! I can somehow identify with Jake...as I recall on two separate occasions in my childhood arranging my own playdates without my parents knowing about it. Maybe everyone even needs a third chance! :) Sorry about the sports injury. I need to scroll down further and see exactly how you came by that one. I didn't realize I had not been to your haven for so long. I'm having a nice long visit here today!

  42. These sound like stories my Dad used to tell when he got our boys off the bus. The worst was when Flyboy went to kindergarten. He ended up having to ride the entire year in the front seat of the bus. Seems he and another little boy - Mitchell would get into trouble in the back seat. My Dad was best friends with the driver by the and of the year. He's a good Dad and Pap. Still helping Flyboy out whenever he needs it.
