Mountain Climbing

Let's see. Do I have anything to say this morning? Hmmm...slept well, woke up stiff and I don't mean drunk. Decided to go out for a walk around the house to see what's been happening since I last checked three days ago. Nothing. I took fifteen photos and not one of them worth a fig.

Before I forget the story, I should tell you what went on a week ago when my daughter rescued the boys and me from monotony by taking us out for lunch and mountain climbing.  It wasn't much of a mountain, which is the good news because somehow I got lost on top of it anyway.

When we arrived, the three of them hopped out of the vehicle and stood admiring the sheer rock wall. They would scramble up over that while I walked up the winding path. Fine. I slogged up, up, up until I reached the last step of ledge to the top. I was saying "hello, hello, hello" as I went because I don't know how to yodel. Well, as I took that last giant step up, there I was face to face with a couple of sunbathing college kids. When I later told this part of the story, my daughter covered her face with the acute embarrassment of it all. Ha! I still love to embarrass the kids.

Now I'm standing on ledge overlooking the twin cities and bikini clad bodies. Rather a fine view depending. When I could not see my three, I turned around to leave and that's when I had no idea where to go next. It looked as if that ledge was a table and every step off from it would cause me to tumble.

Thankfully, it was one time when I had my cell phone on me. I called my daughter. They were nearly back to the vehicle. In the end, my eight-year-old grandson came trudging up the winding path, found me a safe place to step
down, offered me his skinny little shoulder to steady myself, and I was rescued. My hero!

Later that evening while watching the evening news, John and I saw the helicopter rescue of a man and his five-year old from a mountain in Arizona. John said, "That could have been you, Hon." Hahahahahaha... Mercifully, it didn't come to that!

  7. You make me laugh out loud Vee!!! I know what you mean about doing a walk about and nothing has changed from 3 days ago - mind you, the daffodils are finally starting to bloom. Have a fabulous weekend - Spring will come.....

  8. Your grand in shining armor to the rescue. That reminds me...my next tub is going to have handles so I can help myself up. I'm wary of stepping down off of things these days, too, when there is nothing to hang onto.

  9. Aren't you glad they were sun bathers, could have been lovers who just wanted a place away from everyone else!!!!!! We have a few things blooming here in Kansas--just waiting for more color.

  10. Yikes! That reminds me of the trek up Maryland Heights across from Harper's Ferry, WV. Aren't you glad you carry your cell phone with you! Saved us hearing about you on the evening news.

  17. If you'd been rescued by helicopter, you could have had 15 minutes of fame and we could all claim to be your best bud. :) By the way, where the sunbathers [in my best southern accent] nekked?
    Have a great weekend. ~:)

  18. This is a great story which you can tell over many times! At Thanksgiving dinner, you can count your blessings to have a grandson who rescued you from being trapped on top of a mountain! Lucky woman! And I'm quite impressed that you even hiked up to the top of the mountain. I'm by no means sure I could have done it!

  19. Vee, you sure know how to get us giggling over a post from startling some sunbathers to having to be rescued by a young grandson. Never a dull moment huh? Note to family - do not leave Grandma to fend for herself in unknown territory. :-) Not to worry, that would have been me too, lost at the top and without any sense of direction, no ability to find the vehicle again. LOL

  20. Haha, I would so do that! Actually I wouldn't, I HATE heights! You should have been wearing an "Oh darling! Let's be adventurers!" tee shirt to cap it off ;>)

  21. Hello Vee, Really a cute, true story. Just glad you had your cell phone. It really is so much easier going up the mountain in one way. The coming down is a bit tricky. I have had to slide down on my behind many times.
Next time take a walking stick as it helps a little bit. Or next time take your swim suit so you can catch a few rays, while your waiting to be rescued. LOL (Lowlle)

  23. How sweet of your grandson to be your knight-in-shining armor. That's the sweetest ending to your mountain climbing story. After being on some mountains in AZ, I can understand how one might need rescuing. Cell phones do come in handy!
    Happy weekend, Vee. xo

  26. Proving that you don't need a lot of photos to make a highly entertaining post.
What a sweet story complete with a superhero and a happy ending :D.

  28. Vee,
I am LOL. Seriously. Love the way you spin a yarn.
I can see this happening to me, too. Your "faux yodeling" sounds like a great idea, and embarrassing the kids is always worthwhile.

  29. That is so funny! Your grandson will have this story to tell for a while about how he saved grandma.

  33. I love this story. I can picture you on the rock ledge with the half dressed sunbathers and trying to find a way off. Oh my. I'd be scared to know where to jump off too! I don't like heights at all and would be totally freaked out. It looks like it was a nice view though. Glad you had your phone to call for help and take a picture!

  34. Oh- I can just see you being air-lifted in one of those hanging basket thingies from a helicopter. Headline reads, Grandmother refuses to STEP DOWN...so she was TAKEN UP! lol That must have been an awful feeling though! lol Glad you didn't roll over your poor little grandson! xo Diana

  37. This sounds like an episode from I LOVE LUCY!
Come on down to Georgia and climb Stone Mountain with me! No chance of being stuck there, unless you get a bit WINDED, not that I would know anything about that! HA HA!

  38. At first I thought the sun bathers were au natural. Whew!! What a gallant grand, coming to your rescue.

  39. What a great story!! The grands will remember coming to your rescue!! I can relate! I have no sense of direction! Last week I went for a walk in the neighborhood. Mind you I have lived here for 47 years! I decided to go down the drainage ditch - and got lost! At one point there was water in the ditch so I walked along the top of the sloping cement. When I could go no farther on THAT I was stumped at how to get down the steeply sloped concrete. I ended up sliding on my rear end! SH! I have not told this story to anyone!!

  40. I totally understand your dilemma. I am impressed that you made it all the way up to the top. I would probably have been calling from somewhere in the middle and sitting on my bum so as not to feel that I would tumble at any moment. I don't like heights and that's so difficult for K to understand since he has jumped out of planes and loved it. What a great rescue crew you had!
