Favorite Vintage Kitchen Tools

I am late today and staggering around a bit having spent the night in the ER with my daughter once again. She loves blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and all manner of fruits and veggies. Sadly, the "berries" do not love her and her system is prone to develop kidney stones if she indulges. Funny thing, she had not remembered a lick of this until she checked her food guidelines. She has happily been indulging to the tune of 4 cups of berries a week for most of July and August. Yikes! I don't think that she'll forget this time. I am pretty sure that she has learned her lesson, yet again, the hard way. Doesn't it seem unfair that such good-for-you things cause her such troubles?

Since I was sleeping until 1 pm today, I missed out on my usual Sunday posting and am surprising Judith with another appearance at Mosaic Monday. Judith is featuring hydrangeas this week — so lovely!

Thank you for stopping by to see my humble offerings today. Do you have a favorite vintage kitchen tool?

  1. I hope your daughter feels better soon. That is SO painful! Poor thing!
I love all of your old timey kitchen tools. I don't have a mixer here in the condo so I used a tool to cut shortening up into flour when I made biscuits this morning. And I always use a glass juicer....and other old things! lol I like a tea cup in my flour canister for measuring, too. Sweet hugs, Diane

  2. I have a collection of vintage tools that I had hung up in my old house. They are sitting in a box now because I don't know where to put them. I have to think up something clever to display them. I do have a whole mess of rolling pins sitting out in a round shaker box. I have some those tools that are used to cream butter and flour (not sure what they are called) hanging up on the wall in the kitchen. I don't have one that is my favorite. I like them all.

Sorry to hear about your daughter. Yes, what a shame that something so good is bad for her. Hope she better now.

  3. I enjoyed seeing some of your favourite kitchen things. I can't say I have similar items, but I do have a Pyrex mixing bowl that was my mother's and I love using it.

  4. Your post made me think of all the vintage things I have and use that either were my mom's or Joel's moms. They bring back wonderful memories each time they are used. Sometimes it feels like a way of passing love from one generation to the next. Hope your daughter is soon on the mend!

  5. I had no idea that fruits could cause kidney stones and I feel sorry for your daughter to have to watch (or eliminate) these from her diet. Well, I got 2 out of 4 right in the top collage and wish I'd known there was a jar opener gadget years ago. Gosh I grew up running the lid under hot water and banging the heck out of it with the handle of a dinner knife which always dented the lid. LOL
I am surprised that you're 2 for 2 so far, keep up the good work and the mosaics coming!

  6. Oh no - kidney stones are horrid!! Hope it passes and that she feels better real soon. I love your "measuring" cups! My mom always used a certain mug for scooping and measuring. I love using my mom's old crocks for storing things such as onions on my counter top. Love anything vintage - kitchen or other.

  8. I hope your daughter is on the mend now! My favorite vintage kitchen tool is Mr. Jim. hahahaha..... He's making a peach cobbler right now in the kitchen. I'm kind of afraid to go in there because I've heard some mutterings. I expect that I'll have some cleaning up to do later!

  9. So sorry to hear about your daughter.
I love your photos, Vee. Such pretty vintage goodies and I love the vintage linen, too. Even though I never use it, I love mama's '47 rolling pin!
Have a nice afternoon/evening and hope your daughter feels better soon.

  10. Oh my - sure hope she is doing much better. I also did not know about berries causing kidney stones. Thanks for sharing your vintage kitchen tool collection. I am another one that runs hot water around the rim of the lid and tapping with a table knife handle. LOL
Thanks for stopping by. She enjoys baking, making pickles, jellies, etc. which is a good thing as has 3 active children and a hard working husband.

  12. I love all things vintage and would be in trouble if I had more room to keep collections. The vintage things I have are mostly things that my mom used.
I'm so sorry about your daughter's kidney stone.. Poor girl.

  13. I am so sorry to hear about your daughter being in the ER. I hope she feels better soon..It is neat seeing the old tools. We still use the old masher sometimes. I would like one of those juicers.. Have a happy week ahead!

  14. Keeping your daughter in prayer. I have a old cookie jar (broken lid) I use to store the wooden spoons, potato masher in. No favs, just like wooden spoons and that potato masher. Blessings

  16. So sorry to hear about your daughter. Hope she is feeling much better. I have a old potato masher and used to have an old chopper, but the chopper fell apart and the glass broke in the last move. I still have an old juicer (or two) .. one green and one clear glass. Fun! Hope your week is smooth sailing.

  17. Sorry about your daughter's troubles with kidney stones. My husband and son have had bouts with that also--very painful. They now drink a lot of water to flush the kidneys. My favorite vintage kitchen tool is my Mama's red handled potato masher. Unfortunately the red paint is peeling and I'm not able to mash with it. I must tell you I made your blueberry coffee cake today. My husband and grandson raved about it. It's quite yummy! Thank you for the recipe! ♥

  19. Vintage kitchen utensils on a cheery vintage tablecloth... a delightful collage.
So sorry to hear about your daughter's trip to the ER. I have heard that kidney stones are VERY painful and didn't realize they could be caused by healthy berries. No fair! I do hope she is feeling better by now.

  20. I know exactly what your daughter has been through as I have also had kidney stones, worse pain I've ever had, including child birth. Hope she's doing better today!

Just posted my favorite antique kitchen item today :)

  21. So sorry to hear your daughter was ill, Vee! I hope she passed the stones and that now she will stretch her berry indulgences our a bit longer in order not to ahve this problem ever again!

I use many of the same kitchen tools that we purchased as newlyweds almost 40 years ago! I'd guess they'd be called vintage now. What is the last object in your collage used for? The hook?

    1. It was originally for hanging items in the barn or garage. I want to put it up in the kitchen for an apron hook or something.

  23. I hope your daughter is feeling better by now, Vee.
I like to use my old hand egg beater and an old pastry cutter. They work better than many other more complicated tools.

  24. Hi Vee,
    You make fudge...I love fudge!
Your poor daughter, no fair and no fun that's for sure. I didn't know berries could cause stones.
I do have a favorite vintage kitchen tool it belonged to my grandma and is a egg beater.
I hope your daughter is feeling better, sending her a big hug.

  25. Wow what a bummer to have that kind of thing happen for eating god for you berries. Wonder if it would work better if she also ate lots of sugared cranberries. I don't know if worth the try, however...

  26. Oh no your poor daughter - that's so unfair.....
Poor you too Vee, It's always worrying when your offspring are unwell.
Your vintage kitchen items are lovely - things we take for granted, yet most are in daily use.
I haven't ever heard of or seen a Farmall hook - can you explain that one please?!

  28. I'm so sorry to hear of your daughter's unfortunate pain on the weekend. A lesson learned the hard way indeed! And fruit is so good for most of us too. Your mosaic is so colourful and I love your vintage table cloth under your vintage kitchen tools. I like to use vintage jars and bowls or storage. I hope you have a beautiful week Vee!

  29. Sorry to hear about your daughter! Hope she will feel better soon! My favorite vintage kitchen tools are what I have inherited of my Mom's. I have her biscuit cutter and her potato masher. Just having them is special to me now that she is no longer here. Have a delightful day!

  30. Sorry to hear about your daughter. That happened to Mr. Comforts once and I hope it never happens again! I don't have any vintage kitchen tools, but I love my wooden spoons.

  31. So sorry to hear about your daughter! And to think it was caused by berries! Sooo not fair. Good for you and tasty...just doesn't seem right! Glad she's doing better. No vintage tools over here. Unless wooden spoons count. Can't live without my wooden spoons. Maybe because mom always used them I learned to bake with them? Enjoy your day Vee!

  32. I sure hope your daughter is feeling better! What a bummer to have to stay away from berries. I love the shaving mug scoop, I have a little jadeite cup I scoop oatmeal with and it makes me smile every time I use it. The green glass juicer is so pretty, and so is the green hook. I'm loving that color lately! I found some old pastry cutters at a garage sale that match another I picked up a few years ago. It's one of my favorite tools and I was thrilled to find one for each of my daughters.

  33. Oh my goodness...such a shame that something so good for you in most ways can cause illness. Kidney stones are most definitely an illness to be avoided! (My dad has had countless kidney stones over the years...including two removal surgeries back in the day...so I have an acquaintance with these beasts.) I hope that Laurel is feeling better today and that remedies are forthcoming.

    Love your vintage kitchen tools...charming!!

  34. Oh no- I hope your daughter is feeling better. My bad food is ice cream, yet I still think in my mind I can handle it....and then I suffer for it. Have a great week!

  35. Love your vintage kitchen tools. I was wondering what possible use the hook might have in your kitchen...but I see you have already answered that. An apron hanger...of course! I have a few vintage kitchen tools from my mom-in-law that I treasure (a knife from Russia among my favorites).

Hope your daughter is on the mend. Not good! Who knew that fruit could trigger kidney stones? Then I am a good candidate. :)

  36. I missed this post yesterday, I'm so sorry your daughter got so sick, will keep her in my prayers. I'm glad you live close to her and was able to be with her. Thanks for sharing all your vintage kitchen tools, love them. The big mugs are my favorite.

  37. I'm catching up from the weekend. So sorry to read about your daughter and I prayed for her, hoping that she is healing. Who would have thought healthy berries could cause such pain!
Love your vintage kitchen tools. Such an interesting mosaic idea. The shaving mug has such a pretty design on it.

  38. I've been lax on visiting this weekend...so sorry to hear of your daughter's trouble. Wonder why it is that sometimes the things we love the most makes us sick...?
Sure hope she is feeling better soon.

  39. I'm way behind on commenting and just saw this about your daughter. I'm so sorry! I do hope she's feeling much better soon. It's no fair that good things cause these kind of problems! Your vintage items on the vintage tablecloth makes a lovely photo!

  40. Oh so sad about your daughter, Vee. I've had kidney stones twice and they are not fun, but haven't had them in years. I never knew that berries could be a cause.
I did enjoy seeing your vintage kitchen items!

  41. I hope your daughter is 100% in no time. I agree that it's a shame such "good for yous" can cause problems.

As for this post and the vintage kitchen stuff, it's up my alley. I love vintage kitchen tools, and the only person I know who loves them more than I do is my mom. She has an old (now painted) tobacco drying rack running across two walls in the table end of her kitchen from which she hangs all of her mother's (and grandmother's and probably some of her great grandmother's) old kitchen tools. It's my favorite part of her kitchen.

(And related to a post from you that I clearly missed on Saturday, there is a pasta cutter among those tools.)

I used to use them many years ago when I was a school teacher to introduce a unit on nouns. I would bring them all (and a bunch of her other vintage schtuff) to school and have kids try to name them. It was fun.

Thanks for that memory this morning.

  43. Strawberries and berries are not something that agree with me any more (age I guess) and I love them. Hope your daughter has had her last A & E visit.
