Today, I'll probably be writing two posts. One as promised with my nonchalant "Don't worry things will be back to normal on Thursday" comment and the other in response to a debate that, as of this writing, has not yet happened. Also, my commenters gave me a few things to consider.
Okay, on with post number one: I need some advice...I've been storing this easel for a certain someone and I really like how it looks in the space...what say you? (Yes, I am guilty of listening to Bill O'Reilly. ;>) The thing is...with the temps getting colder and the heat turned back to conserve...all that glass looks cold.
And one last thing before I leave that space...I am looking for a good way to disguise big, ugly tv sets. Anyone have any ideas? Cheap ideas? Know of a blog that's dealt with this? Anyone?
You guessed it. Atop that antique trunk sits one ugly tv.
Catch you all later...I have sooo much catching up to do with all of you!
I like your easel as you have it placed. The warmth of the beautiful wood on the walls makes up for the cold glass I think.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had an idea for hiding TVs. I'll be watching here to see what others come up with.
I think it looks great there, and before I read the bit about the cold windows, I thought - hey in winter it will block out the cold miserable weather! TVs - only putting them in some old reclaimed cupboard! But that doesn't help at all.
ReplyDeleteIf anybody comes up with a good way to hide a TV, let me know. I've given up. When we first moved into this house, we bought a big armoire' (spelling?)for the living room TV. But because of the way the room is laid out with the fireplace and windows, there was only one place to put the thing. I finally moved it to our bedroom and just took the TV out of the living room (we have a bigscreen upstairs in the Star Wars room we could watch. Goof grief, that sounds funny, doesn't it? lol). Anyway, we lasted about a year without a TV in the living room until we couldn't stand it anymore. We bought a flatscreen and hung it on the wall. At least it was out of the way. Then Randey decided the flatscreen wasn't "big" enough (we're just getting old and have bad vision. ha!) so we bought a bigger flat screen. Unfortunately, the wall mount we had for the first one wasn't big enough for the second one and a new mount cost $350!!!!! I still can't get over that! So, being the cheap-o person I am (that means I spend money and then refuse to spend the "extra" momey to make something work properly), I opted to buy a piece of furniture to put the TV on instead of putting in on the wall. We spent $220 on a cabinet and guess what? I'm back to square one - I have a giant black hole in my living room called a TV set. I'm thinking about throwing a sheet over the top and calling it Casper, My Big Honkin' Halloween Ghost. But what would I cover it with AFTER Halloween? lol

The easel is lovely! I understand your concern however. I have beautiful french doors in my dining room. When it is dark more than half the day, it does look cold. Even if you considered covering the windows in some way, couldn't the easel stay put?
ReplyDeleteThe TV problem is more complicated. At my house, it is on most of the time my husband is home (watching Bill O'Reilly!). If I could get him to turn it off, I would have the same problem you do!
Vee,
ReplyDeleteI love the easel and the painting you have displayed on it is gorgeous! Love how you gussied up your vintage picnic basket too.
Since your trunk is rustic and you happen to be married to a very handy man here is a suggestion ~ Why not try to find some old reclaimed wood, something rustic like barn wood and perhaps some old shutters or an interesting window. Have John build a box from the old wood to house the TV, hinge shutters or an old window to the front and problem solved! There are also hinges available that if your box structure is wide enough that you can open the door and slide it in beside the TV rather than have it open to the side. With a window you could add a pretty fabric behind the glass, or some pretty scrapbook paper, or why not a gallery of family photos, have mats cut to fit the glass and make black and white prints, back them with pretty paper so when the door is open you get a pretty view. I'll stop now, you have my brain buzzing! I hope you find a suitable solution!
I love the easel and painting. Miss Sandy has the best idea I think. I've got an idea also. Make a million gajillion bucks (like Oprah) , call Oprah and ask her for the name of the people who installed a magic pop-up TV inside a credenza. Have it installed.
ReplyDeleteOk, you're right, Sandy's idea is really good.

If I hear you correctly...you are looking for window coverings? I guess I'm not the one to give advice, since mine are all bare...I have Roman blinds and they are down only in the bright sun.
ReplyDeleteAnd I know what you mean about the TV...since I have a rather large one in the corner of our great room. I chose solid black when we bought it...hoping it might be less noticeable. The only solution is a large automated trap door in the floor...operated by a remote control...so the whole thing disappears. We should have thought of that before we built.
We'll be back to read post#2 later today...Elmer says to tell you he most enjoyed your post yesterday!
OT but...
ReplyDeletePlease read the following, while you still can.

I love leaving the glass exposed on windows. .if you don't need privacy on those windows. . .allow yourself to see what's happening outside. .
ReplyDeleteThe TV in our family room is exposed too. . which doesn't bother me. We have a small tv in our great room which is open into the kitchen . . .and that is hidden in an old wardrobe. . maybe I'll post that sometime.
It really is hard to hide a big old TV and I like that old trunk that it is sitting on.
So .. as you can see, I've been no help at all.
Why hide it???? TV is a big part of everyones life in this day and age and everyone knows that we have one
ReplyDeleteHi Vee
ReplyDeleteI hate politics and politicians of ALL kinds so I'd like to keep my opinions to myself....hope you don't mind. I always vote issues not party. Sadly I have been very disappointed in the past by candidates who I believed in and then found out they were full of baloney anyway!
I just hope and pray that whoever wins this election will lead our country with integrity and leadership.
The easel looks pretty where it is! Not sure what to do for a big TV -- we keep ours in our bedroom so no one sees it...lol!
Hugs, Pat
