Johnny's

Oh boy! Look what came in the mail on Valentine's Day!

Er...let's try again...

If I could just move Fioré's behind a bit...

There! Johnny's Seed Catalog is a delight through and through. This year, I'm most interested in these...

If you visit Johnny's, they'll send you a catalog of your own. I'm certain that you'll love it as much as Fioré and I do.

Oh, and see why I'm in love with herb disks right *here* on this video. Fascinating!

While we're discussing plants...let me share this info on Christmas cactuses/cacti.

Christmas cactus will bloom if given long uninterrupted dark periods, about 12 hours each night. Begin the dark treatments in about mid-October to have plants in full bloom by the holidays. You can place the plants in a dark closet from about 8 P.M. - 8 A.M. each night for 6-8 weeks or until you see buds forming. Christmas cacti will also bloom if they are subjected to cool temperatures of about 50 to 55 degrees F, eliminating the need for the dark treatments. Plants should be blooming for the holidays if cool treatments are started by early November.

Guess my sister was right after all! And, guess what just hit the basement this morning? I'll report back in a month. Will that be in time for Easter?

Happy Tuesday, Everyone!

  1. I can see why you (and Fiore)are excited about that! I watched the video...and now I shall see if anyone out here has seed disks. Great idea! I love having basil on the windowsill. Is Johnny Seeds near your place? I'm thinking maybe you can drive over to the farm...instead of ordering through the mail.

  2. Oh me, oh my! I don't think any of us can possibly enjoy that catalogue, as much as Fioré does!!! What a sweet 'puss' on that pussie-cat. ,-)

Don't you just love the 'faces' they put on?!? Contentment. Disdain. And everything in between. Sometimes I think one could do a blog, of just "Cat Poses/Faces."

    One could! :-)

And I don't think I've said how lovely your header photo is! So I'll rectify that situation right now. It's lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvely. In alllll ways.

You're going to have to go far, to make a replacement for this one, Vee. :-)

And I say "make a replacement," because I know that you {and I!} just _have_ to change our header pic, now and then. >,-) I'll get one and think it's the most beautiful one ever. For a while. And then, I get restless. Tired of seeing it. Even though a while ago, I thought it was puuuuurfect. And off I go, replacing it with another. But hey, that's some of the fun of blogging, for we who love to change headers, anyway. :-)

  3. Oh, I am enjoying all the garden catalogs, too! Anticipating spring!!

My two bigger Christmas cacti always seem to start blooming around Thanksgiving. I confess I don't give them any special dark or cool treatment though I've heard people get great results from that. They are always in my sunny kitchen, except during the summer when I put them out on the porch.

But a little start-up of a different variety bloomed for the first time on Valentine's Day. I blogged about it yesterday. Funny, we both have Christmas cactus on our minds!!

  10. Ahh... fresh basil! My favorite thing to grow. I just sent away for a Johhny's catalog -- thanks!

The seed discs are nice because it eliminates having to thin out the seedlings when they grow -- that can be such back breaking work, and I always feel sorry for the ones I pull out.

My cat likes to sit on my newspaper when I'm reading it...lol

  12. You kitty looks alot like my Graceland kitty. I bet you are getting the itch to garden. It is so fun to plan and plot the garden at this time of year.

    Loved your peanut butter story.

  13. Hmmm, I wish I could get my Christmas cactus to bloom. It's large and was in bloom when given to me. But it's not bloomed ever since. I've tried the cool room, the dark room, the closet. Nothing. I don't think it likes me --- makes me sad! Pout!

I love the herb bowl --- it sounds like you are in the mood for spring, just like I am!

  14. How cool is that! They have a wonderful selection of seeds. I've been thinking about starting some early this year...I don't have much success, we'll see :)

    Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

  15. My pitiful Christmas cactus gave me about five sad blooms last Feb., however, this year---NOTHING!!! I now know, after reading this post, the error of my ways. I just had it perched in the corner of the kitchen (close to a window)--thinking it had great filtered light. I didn't know about putting it in the dark in October!! I will give that a try next fall and see if I get a little "blooming reward". Thanks for the plant advice. Dana

  20. I watched the video and felt inspired - maybe if I only plant herbs the deer will leave the garden alone!
Too bad I didn't wait to learn the real secret to getting the Christmas Cactus to bloom - mines history now!
Love your header photo - I could just sink right down by those French doors and pick up a book, a cup of tea.........
