A Haven for Vee

A Day Late and A Dollar Short

Vee is my name and procrastination is my game. I am such a procrastinator that I didn't even get a post together to participate in Melissa's Procrastinator Party. On time that is. What you are seeing above is an antique jelly cupboard retrieved from my grandmother's shed. It had its original buttermilk paint when I first hauled it home. The first mistake I made was to paint over original buttermilk paint despite its unattractiveness. I did my best at sponging (all the rage then) and wound it all up by asking my daughter, a teenager at the time, to paint the ends. I was going for that ubiquitous "country" look. She, her mother's daughter for sure, never finished. I have long endured by keeping an antique high chair in front of it. I do hate painting.
I found some BIN and painted the end yesterday afternoon. Looks better already. Yes, I plan to paint the entire cabinet. Stay tuned for what happens next and what color I go with. I'm thinking something a little Daisy Cottage. Kim is unafraid of color and I'd like to join her, even if I am scared out of my wits to do so. Then I'll have to work on properly decorating the top...maybe.

A happy weekend to you!

  1. You CAN do it!!!! I can't wait to see it! I have a spinning wheel that my grandmother brought from Finland. Years later my mom painted over the buttermilk blue paint and made it a shiny brown. The spinning wheel is now mine. I would much prefer the original chippy paint but must admit have thought but never acted. Maybe there needs to be a second procrastinator's party- if we ever get through this one!

    Oh well, I tried!

  3. Hi Vee,
Your sense of humor and the way you take life is so refreshing to me.

I am looking forward to seeing the end result of this precious cabinet that was your grandmothers. I have several in our barn and my dh keeps asking why go looking at auctions, and the only legit answer is.. I want one ready to go in my house, because I am a procrastinator. Have a great day.

  7. I'm chuckling because that is so me! I procrastinate but when I do get around to finishing a project I am filled with delight..so maybe not a bad thing to procrastinate a little. (only a little..grin)
I love old cupboards..I have one too that I rescued from a shed and am wondering whether I should leave it in it's 'oldness' or paint it..

  8. I love your old cupboard. I like lots of color too. I figure if I don't like it, I can always paint it over again. :-)

  13. Hi Vee,
Thanks for stopping by. To answer the question of him taking this journey with me.
As far as the exercising, no way!! he tells me he gets enough on the farm. lol Excuses excuses!.

Just yesterday, I was out trucking down the driveway , slinging my arms and trying to breath, but who drives by, and smiles and gives me the okay sign. makes me so mad. And would you believe I 've got a blister on my heel. Please some sympathy here.

Truth,is he like my sister eats all the time and doesn't gain. And again makes so mad. lol

The duck is the mother isn't she darling.
Have a gret day. Sorry for the long reply.
    Blessings,

  14. Oh, I don't like painting furniture either! I have so many wood pieces that need to be repainted, so instead I cover them up with linens!
    Have a wonderful weekend Vee!

  16. Ahhh... the art of sponging. I'm guilty of doing this in both our sons rooms in the mid 90s. However, Adam is moving out next month and I'm going to do some sort of Ralph Lauren color. It's going to become my studio - and I use the word "studio" lightly.

I'm sure the cupboard will be beautiful.

Have a great day and an even better weekend!

  17. On our last move, I found a baby's nightgown pattern pinned to the darling flannel..

...it was for my son. He's a 38 year old biker..how's that for procrastination??

Hahahahaha! Love it! At least we'll NEVER run out of projects!

  18. It's a great piece--it will look good! If you can check out Evie's kitchen at www.lifeongrace.blogspot.com I think she did a wonderful job of painting her kitchen cabinets and I love the color combination she chose. It's inspired me to work on mine! V.

  19. I can't wait to see what you do with your jelly cupboard! I missed the deadline for Melissa's procrastination party, too. I think a second party is order for late comers such as us!

    Happy May Day!

  21. Better late than never! It's such a nice piece! Daisy Cottage is my favorite blog - so maybe yellow, red or blue? Can't wait to see what you're going to do with it.

I sometimes I listen to a book on tape or music while I'm painting, especially if it's a big project. Makes the time go faster for me. Other times I take it as an opportunity to let my mind wander.

I don't think I'll be able to do my project as we've had nothing but rain and storms since I posted my project! I think I'll have to pick something else.
