Ready for the *Tin Man

(*photo deleted)

Another sweet little haul from the local flea market this week...a book, a spatula, and an oil can. Funny how these things delight us so.

The oil can is a vintage Singer made in the U.S.A. I love a "made in the U.S.A." label.

Through Gates of Splendor by Elisabeth Elliot tells the story...oh I'll just pop in another picture...

Perhaps many are familiar with this quote: He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. ~Jim Elliot

The thing about this is that John has been talking about this story a lot in recent weeks so to find this book on top of a stack of others for a pittance was almost providential. Further, it has a little provenance as there is a bookplate inside that says that a copy of this book was placed in a certain church library in memory of a loved one. That church happens to be in my dad's hometown. Whom has John been discussing this story with? My dad. Father's Day coming up next month... Hmmm... We'll see. Gotta love God breezes.

Look at this fantastic spatula. I have nothing like it and have always wanted one to frost cakes with because I frost cakes all.the.time. once or twice a year.

I was planning to bake Mary Todd Lincoln's Almond White Cake posted by Suzanne on May 8, but found that I had no almonds. Figures. Anyway, I had to make it up to the man somehow. Have you ever seen a man's face fall when he's expecting cake and realizes that it isn't going to happen? Sad...very. I remedied it this way...Crumb Cake for breakfast.

Crumb Cake Receipt (An Old Family Recipe)

2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
¾ cup shortening (I use butter)

Make the above ingredients into crumbs. Save 1 cup for topping.

1 cup sour milk (add 1 TBS white vinegar to fresh milk)
1 tsp soda
1 tsp cloves (I used a half teaspoon of nutmeg...no ground cloves in this house either)
1 tsp cinnamon
1 egg

Add to the crumb mixture, beat well, cover with crumbs.
Pour into an 8x8 pan.
Bake at 350° for approximately 35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Create yourselves a wonderful Tuesday...

  1. Fantastic finds. The book is one of my favorites, your dad will love it. Today I will splash in the mud puddles and wade through wicked high wet grass to see what has changed in my outdoor world and to dream of landscaping. I can do this because today we have SUNSHINE!!!!! I don't know who is more chipper about it, me or the birds.

I plan to take your advice and create myself a wonderful Tuesday.

  3. Cinnamon and cloves, in that recipe. Interesting. And very yummy looking. :-)

And what a precious idea for a Father's Day gift. That book.

I call that kind of a happening, synchrinosity. When we are tuned to something, we notice things, pertaining to it. John has been talking about this story a lot, of late. You were tuned to notice that book, in among all the dusty treasures. Just me, I know. Just me. :-)

I have to *complain* today. {You've been expecting a complain, haven't you? It's been about a week, since my last one, of course.} -grin-

Anyway, my *complaint* is, it's hard to find a particular post, in your Archives. -moan- -sigh- And I so wanted to find a particular post, in your Archives. And I had to give up. So now, I have to take the wee little crumb of info, you dropped along the path, a few days ago. And run with it. -sigh-

Not knowing if I'll be correct, or not.

And trouble is, I actually thought to look, ahead of time! Me! Remembered something! Me! And then, to not be able to find it. -Did I say sigh-? :-))))

Ahemmmm, who ever said _you_ have the lock on "being vague," hu? >,-)

    Gentle hugs,
    Aunt Amelia

  4. God breezes or God Moments as my dear friend, now in Heaven, used to call them are such lovely experiences.

This is an incredible story and I am so happy for you.

Today is turning into a busy day...full of friends and fun with an interlude at the dentist in the middle...

  6. Great finds...one and all!

We watched the movie 'End of the Spear' some time back...so worth watching. It's the story of Steve Saint...the son of one of the five who were murdered in Equador together with Jim Elliott. What an incredible story.

And guess what we had for dessert last night? Crumb cake...an old family favorite recipe that looks just like yours...but has raisins (gotta have those raisins!).

p.s. well last year I had red, purple, yellow, white and fuschia as my color theme....so yes the colors you mentioned would work for me :-) And nope... pansies only do well here in the late fall, winter and spring. It gets too warm for them in the summer in NC... So no matter how much water or tender loving care I gave them, they would still be dead...sad to say.

  17. Hi Vee
Your local flea market has some good stuff! At least it is affordable. I don't think I'm destined to gather second hand goods as every place I find to shop seems to want a kings ransom for everything. What is made in the USA anymore? Sadly not much!

Sounds like that book will be a perfect father's day gift! I love serendipity!

    Crumb cake sounds perfect!

  20. I don't have almonds either, otherwise I would have baked the cake. Crumb cake is a very acceptable alternative in my book.

I love all your finds, especially the book. Now I'm curious about the story.

  22. It is an amazing story. The movie as Judy mentioned was very well done. I have enjoyed many of Elizabeth Elliot's books. They are written out of a heart of such deep character.

"God breezes" I like that :)

    Answer to your question:

Yes a younger version of me...I love the tape measure idea. Tell John I might try that with some leeks I have...hmmmm!
