Memories Light the Corners of What's Left of My Mind

My son celebrated his birthday recently and we were all there to enjoy the opening of gifts and the partaking of cake and ice cream.

He opened my card and read about the little boy I remember running through the house, leaping from the stairs, and playing with his matchbox cars. It was a sappy card. I offered a semi-apology that I wanted him to know that I still remembered and that he, too, will hold his own memories of raising his two boys close. He choked a bit; I choked a bit. John took my hand. We carried on. And, mercifully, a good time was had by all.

  3. I was just telling my oldest daughter last night how quickly she is growing up and that she is making her Mama feel old! It is wonderful to have those memories to share - a happy birthday to your son!

  4. Vee,
TOTALLY related to your post...My only is now 22, living far from home and on the threshold of starting her one life and family.

Where did the time go. Our children won't have a clue as to the depths of our feelings until they become parents themselves...at least I didn't. And by then, my mother had passed away (30 years this June 12th) and I didn't have the chance to tell her how right she was...

Thanks for your post. And happy belated birthday to your son!

  5. Awwwww, that was sweet. I'm so glad you did it. And I'm so glad he's a son, who choked up a bit. Very glad of that. Says many nice things, about him.

As well, as about his Mother.

    Gentle hugs,
    'Aunt Amelia'

  6. Memories are the best treasures!

I could have been looking at a pile of pictures of my son...from the baseball pose to the 'sleeping with dog' pic.

Best wishes to the birthday boy.

  7. I am sappy too! My girls don't understand, but it's just the depth of my love for them that is coming thru. Like already said, when they too are parents, only then will they understand! It is so important though to show our feelings!

Sweet memories and tons of love.

  9. I can relate so much too, Vee - those memories are always there, and sometimes I look at my children and see the little ones instead of the grown adults, and I say to them - you will always be my children, so I am allowed to get sentimental!

  10. You commented in my blog: "...just reading CJane's blog where she had a poll asking about comments."

Oh I'm interested! Went through your "Blogs I Follow" blog, but couldn't find any, which seemed to be "a CJane's blog." Please, point me to her blog URL.

I'd love to read her, since she seems to be on a similar wave-length as I find myself... With this experimenting with turning off Comments, for a week.

    Please and thank you,
    'Aunt Amelia'

  11. Happy birthday to your son.
And to answer another question. I am the gardener but Alan does mow the lawn and comes to my rescue if something is proving too difficult on my own.

  13. What a gift to give your son--a reminder of special times gone by and encouragement as his own sons grow. I loved the part about John taking your hand. It seems it wasn't so long ago you were "empty handed". What a blessing today. ~Kathy

  14. Hi Vee

I love the picture collage you made for this post ... very nice way to show many all at once...I really liked that!

Ah ...sons...they do sometimes go their own way and do their own things don't they? But they'll always be our sons, no matter what, and it's so wonderful you were able to tell yours that on his birthday! He gave you some wonderful grandsons.

I'm off to visit my son and daughter-in-law and grandson on Monday. I'll miss you!
    Hugs, Pat

  15. We will never regret the meaningful cards we give, the words we say to encourage others and extend our love. It is so precious to see the mother/son relationship you have! I so enjoy my two sons and they can shed a tear now and then with me too! Real men! Ha! You have a great Sunday too!

  16. Oh, I mean I love the fact that they can shed tears and their hearts can be touched and that is part of manliness. Hope I made sense this time!

  17. Vee,
Pass along my belated birthday wishes to your son. I think sappy cards with treasured memories are the very best kind. I love the photo collage of your son, I hope they were a part of your party decor. Isn't "remember when" one of the best conversation starters?

  24. I had to tear up a little thinking of my own 3 grown kids. Altho they don't have younguns yet, they are all 3 close to me & Tony. Happy Birthday to your son, Vee. I love your little vignette of his pics. Very sweet - don't tell him I said that - but I can see my own kids' photos lying there when I look at your's. Have a wonderful day!

PS - the grands are SO cute!
