I Went Alone

Yup. I was sitting right here at the keyboard, after rescheduling the cable guys because John wasn't quite ready for them today, when I read Ellen's comment on yesterday's post that she leaves when projects are ongoing and returns once they are done. Aha! Exactly what I should do I thought.

So I said, "Fare-thee-well, dear husband. I am leaving for the rest of the day. Do not expect me back before six tonight."

He said, "Fine." I'm sure that he was in his own particular hell pulling himself around and through the crawl space repeatedly for two days and so wouldn't miss me.

I was driving down the road wondering where in the world I was going to go when I realized that I could kill some time at the theater watching W*r H*rse. I'm disguising that title there in that inane clever way because, after I review this movie, I don't want Spi*lberg to find me.

No, I am not going to tell you the details. I'm just going to say that those negative reviews you may have read may have some basis in reality. It is a heavily machinated, war-is-hell movie. My one tear was shed at the very end. I was happy when it was over and wished that it hadn't lasted so long (2 hours and a half, more or less). I only cared about a few of the characters and I didn't always care about the horse, though he's a magnificent horse all right. He's no Seabiscuit so John would have hated it.

Except for the stunning scenery, you could happily wait for the video. In fact, you could skip the video. Just sayin'... Perhaps I'd prefer reading the book upon which the movie is based. It is actually a children's novel written by Mi*hael M*rpurgo in 1982. And so that might explain the simpleness childlike quality of the storyline as I understand the director followed the book closely.

I did learn in previews that Titanic is going to be re-released on April 6. Now that I might like to see on the big screen again. Who am I kidding? I'd love to see Gone With the Wind on the big screen again and The Sound of Music and Forrest Gump and The Notebook and... Any oldies that you'd like to see on the big screen again?

Debbie at Bungalow tells me that not too many have found her giveaway and since it's for Shaklee products and since I love Shaklee products, I thought I'd point you in that direction. You can find it right *here.* While you're there you might want to check on the progress that Debra is making painting a chair. The upholstery of the chair. Who knew that you can do that?!

Despite the complaining about not being able to comment at many blogs, I am taking the plunge and trying the new interface. I hope that I can go back if necessary. Let's see how this goes. My instant review of the new comment system is in. It's a mixed review. I like being able to comment directly and easily to my friends. I do not like that my comments are tallied as part of the total so I will be using the ability rarely. Some folks get their knickers in a knot over comments. They even say, "My! You have so many comments." So I've never thought it a good thing for a mediocre nothing blog such as mine to have too many comments, especially if I am "padding" them myself. ;>

A happy Friday to you and a happy weekend!

  1. Over the last few years I have found that I value my "alone" time more and more. I am married to a bit of a hermit - so this isn't a problem for him.

I have never gone to a movie before by myself. Sounds like a great idea, if you can find something worth the high price of the tickets.

  2. Vee,

Sometimes it is good to leave. Sometimes I wish they would leave so I could enjoy my space all by myself. I would never think to go to a movie - that was a good idea. We watch them at home so that I can knit.

    Have a great weekend.

  3. I would never have gone to a movie alone. Something about being in a dark theater with stangers. LOL I don't know the last movie we went to. Must be 3 years ago. I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed in that movie. We might rent it one day. Hubby will like it and I can watch while I blog. :) A bit snowy here this morning. Have a great weekend.

  4. I haven't wanted to see W*r H*rse from the first time I saw it advertised, but it's because I hate crying and I thought it would be a tearful movie. Wasn't "Saving Private Ryan" a Spielberg movie? I was shaking while watching it - too much reality. Now I'm thinking that it would be the same reason I wouldn't enjoy W*r H*rse. So glad you gave a review because now I'm not feeling so bad about not having any interest in seeing it.

Off to see that painted chair...

    1. Diane, so true. I didn't cry because I was steeled for it, but the noise. Ackkk. I must remember not to ever see a war movie again. Saving Private Ryan should have been a clue.

  5. I did a similar run once, and saw Mama Mia which of course, I thoroughly enjoyed.

Alone time can be good in small doses, I think.

Your review of War Horse doesn't surprise me, I suspected as much. I'm not sure I'll even bother on DVD.

Have a wonderful day my dear,
    from
    me :)

  6. I have gone to the movies a few times by myself. No problem at all for me. It is usually me and a few other loners in the theater. AND! our local theater has "senior days" and so ALL day that day senior tickets are only 5 bucks. Seems pretty good to me. Now I will be honest and say I have never asked how old the senior is suppose to be(never seen a sign either) as it does seem to vary from theater to theater and some of them you are suppose to be 60. Considering I am 57 that wouldn't be quite right I guess. However, NO ONE has ever asked if I was indeed old enough, and I figure I do live in a senior citizens park, so it must be OK, haha. And now I am sooo glad to hear someone else felt like I did about War Horse. Now I know I said I liked it, WHICH I DID, but only to the degree that it was OK. In my opinion, it was a REALLY LONG MOVIE (they could have cut soo much out) that was mainly about a gruesome war with plenty of horrible scenes and this poor horse going from one nightmare to another. I would have LOVED much more of a storyline about the owners. The ending was OK but that was about it and I too was sooo glad it was FINALLY over. I am not much of an animal fan in the first place, so I thought maybe it was just me....I feel bad I didn't give you my TOTAL opinion in the first place now. The one I really enjoyed was, We bought a zoo....haha. Looking forward to your finished project! Have a good week-end!

  7. You are so funny! I loved what you said about your review and S.S.
I love horses and the previews made me sad thinking it was gonna be a 'Marley and Me' thing (which I could not watch either). I'm looking forward to seeing the Snow White movie with Julia Roberts as the wicked queen next month. "They're not wrinkles, they're.......crinkles!"
    I need a good laugh!

  8. Thanks for the review Vee. I had thought I wanted to see it, but after hearing other reviews, I think it would be to gory war story for me.

I have never gone to the movies alone, but I think I would do a matinee by myself.

  9. My 11 year old son just finished the novel and loved it. His sister has seen the movie and hated it, so there you go. Maybe it's a guy thing. I don't blame you for leaving. Audley is coming in this weekend and has a few projects to finish before we move so we can get this place ready to rent out. I may leave. In fact I may not return until he is finished. I may leave the kids with him, too. Better yet I may take some of those Hilton hotel points he has and spend the weekend sleeping in Chattanooga.

What a great idea to leave Vee!! =)

    Have a great weekend!

  10. Thanks for the review. I am not going to waste my time or money on seeing that move. I had heard it was not that good. I am so fascinated by my Kindle that I have able to see two of the new movies that won awards at the GG. Moneyball and Ides of March were very good movies. I can get them on Kindle way before they get to Netflix. I am not a comment counter either. Makes not matter to me how many I get. I just love doing it and have my work printed out in a book. I have six books now.

  12. I appreciate your review of "War Horse," because I have no intention of seeing it anyway. ,-)

We do plan on using Christmas gift theater tickets, to see the new Sandy Bullock and Tom Hanks film... about the day(s) after 9/11. "Extreemly Close and Incredibly Loud" or whatever the title is.

Wonder if it is even coming out, in your area? We see tv adds all the time, and so, know the plot. :-) But I love Sandy... As I said, my friend in Mass. never sees tv adds, so guess it is in limited release. ?????

I do so hope that John's work is done!!! Yes Ma'am! If one knows what one is doing, the wires can be put IN the wall, and not hanging out side. But! 'Tis work!

And I am on *pins and needles*, waiting for a full report WITH pics, of where the new tv is placed. :-) You must give it on Sat. You simply must. -grin- The suspense is killing your Dear Readers. ,-)

Well, you have the new *what's-is*, and I can still comment. Fine with me. I just have no intention of using the Reply-To-Any-Comment thingy. 'Cause I never return, to see what the blog owner did comment, in response to this or to that.

If I ask a question, I hope it will be answered in email. If not, if I really need an answer, I can ask it, in email. ,-)

Yeah, I'm being *grumpy* and *pouty* about the new Blogger Comment Reply Thingy. Still!!! lol. Better than being *grumpy/pouty* about something(one) closer to home!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Wasn't even thinking I'd want to see W*r H*rse and so now I know I wouldn't be missing anything. I can also save my redbox $1 when it does come out. Thanks for the review! I've never gone to the movies alone either, but probably should because my guy and I don't seem to go to movies anymore what with redbox and on demand and all. But, kuddos to you for going alone. BTW I tried the new interface...wasn't crazy about it, so I switched back. Let me know how you feel about it. Have a nice day!

  14. Hi Vee,

THANKS so much for the shout out! I really appreciate it!
Sometimes I go to the movies by myself too. I love a small theater near here with a hip coffee shop attached and was actually thinking of see that movie.....but now I think I'll wait.
    Have a great day!

  15. Thanks for the movie review, I was uncertain whether I wanted to spend the money for it, now I will use that money for something worthwhile, like art supplies. I haven't figured out all the changes in blogger yet. So far, I am getting along with what I have.
    Have a good day.

  16. I don't think I'll be seeing that movie. There's enough suffering in the world without going to see it at the movies. History is one thing, and we should all pay attention and learn about what's happened before, but I don't need Hollywood to teach me any lessons. Thanks for the honest review!

  17. Vee,
It's an interesting philosophy. A good idea. Although I could never, ever watch War Horse. I'd have to come up with another pastime.

  18. Ha! I'm glad you were able to get away. I'm also happy to read your review. Movie on the big screen...hmmm. I do remember how fabulous Sound of Music was on the big screen with the intermission. Gone with the Wind had an intermission, too. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Hobbit on the big screen. Peter Jackson better get it right! :0)
Hope your Friday is going well!

  19. Good for you! Was the work finished when you got home?? I'm glad I read your review ... it was on my list to see but now, I think I'll wait for the dvd ... maybe. :)

  20. I'm glad for this review. It means we will definitely wait for the video version, if we watch it at all.

I like alone time. In fact, yesterday afternoon I arrived home from school looking forward to a cup of tea all by myself, and my husband drove in the driveway just before me, looking so happy to get off work earlier than 6 pm. And I felt ashamed. But I still like being alone.

The thing with this replying to comments is - how often do you go back and check if someone has replied to your comment? I don't have time to do that. I prefer to email directly if there's a question, or to answer the person on their own blog, even though the answer usually has absolutely nothing to do with the post.

I'm really curious about this one. So I may check back here in a bit to see if you replied via the comment reply feature. But just to let you know, I rarely do that.

    1. Well, shoot, Lorrie, I couldn't disappoint you... I have had three emails this morning each reporting that the person could NOT comment here today. A blank white page popped up. This is one of those new features that Blogger needs to work on before many will want to try it. I think I'm going back to my old method. At first, I thought it would clear up the load of email. As you say, however, who has time to circle back around to all the blogs one visits! Me neither.

    2. So here I am - rechecking my comment, and voilà - there's a reply! You didn't disappoint at all.

Enjoy shooting the white snow - let me know how it all turns out! I have such a fuzzy brain that all these numbers just don't do much for me.

    1. Sorry, but I'm only able to comment by putting it in the reply box.

Thanks for the movie review. It sounds like one that I wouldn't want to waste time going to see on the big screen. My all time favorite movie to see on the big screen is The Sound of Music. Loved the scenery, the music, the story! That opening scene is the best I've ever seen. I could watch it over and over.

      Have a great weekend!

    2. Up to five so far who've reported that they are unable to comment. You're clever to find a way, Cheryl! The opening scenes and closing scene in W H*rse are beautiful. Watch the trailers and imagine them on the big screen.

  22. Poor John...what a project!

I don't think we are going to go see W*r H*rse though as you know we have horse lovers here!

After Christmas I tried going back to a classic template on blogger so I could use a cute background but while it lets me change it won't let me add a background or my blog list etc..it only will let me upgrade my template! Yikes! So I have been playing with it a bit...not sure I am happy with it yet...

  23. I'm still not getting what you are saying about comments, but this seems to be working fine, though it is a different look. Sometimes I just have to "let go" trying to figure things out, you know! Glad to have this movie review as I was thinking this might be a big screen one, but now the dvd will be fine someday ... have a good weekend!

  24. Thanks for that honest review and for saving me some money! We saw Tinker, Tailer, Soldier Spy the night it came out and it was a great movie but you'd better find a synopsis first. I was lost for much of the movie. Great performances, though.

  26. First of all, this blog is brilliant Miss Vee. I love it, and the comments are because you have so many people who say, like I do, oooh, I wonder what Vee said today? And then I pop over here. Lately I have not been visiting all the blogs that I used to visit, due to lack of time. But I always come here first. Those comments on your posts, it's because so many people love your blog, like me!

  29. Mr. Sweet just finished War Horse (on his Kindle) and was NOT impressed with it, at all. This is not to say that others might not like it....but, he has no desire to see the movie. :)) He loved Seabiscuit ...the book AND the movie.
I could watch Titanic a million times...and I watch The Notebook about every 6 months on dvd. Right now, I am in the middle of Under The Tuscan Sun and it seems like it is going to be good. Seen it?

I still haven't figured out why everyone is having trouble with comments. ??..everything is still the same with mine. I saw the "try the new interface" but I wouldn't click on it for nothing. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it...." :)
