A Cowbird Story

Cowbird. I'm a cowbird. I'm also a right regular thorn in Vee's side. Yeah, well, we all got our troubles.

For the love of my little woman, I spend my days strutting up and down this here runway.

Sometimes the little woman struts the runway with me, though she's more likely to be off shopping or something. *She's certainly not wasting any time sitting on eggs.

I am ever on hyper alert for "the other man."

There he is now!

What in the world does she see in him?

What does he have that I don't have?

*Cowbirds are considered pesky birds and will usually run off other, more pleasant birds from a yard. The female lays her eggs in a host nest and allows that bird to raise her young. Talk about ugly duckling revisited. source

I'm about done with the fun of watching this guy beat up on himself and my mirror. I've got a little gun that runs on pellets and blasts of air...

  1. True love falls fast in his world. We used to have parakeets and it was interesting watching them fall for themselves in a mirror. They would caress that mirror for hours. Thank heaven I don't do it. I wouldn't want to fall in love with myself. No way. :)

  2. Vee,

We have a crazed Cardinal this year who is about to drive me insane by thumping on my back window trying to fight his image! At first it was kind of cute and funny but after three days of pecking I feel like whacking him! We have tried several remedies to get rid of him a shiny pie pan, an owl, even a flapping jacket hanging from the eve of the house, I hope he gets tired of fighting himself soon. Hope your pesky bird moves on to better pursuits too. Have a great day.

  3. He's awfully pretty though. Has the Cowbird taken the place of the turkey vulture? I would love to have one of those little guns. Right now I'm using a slingshot! HA.

  4. Funny you should ask, Suzanne. With vigilance, John has been able to keep those vultures away from the house. We don't mind seeing them, but NOT in our trees. We never worry about "hitting" anything. It's the sound that drives them off.

Miss Sandy, it does get old fast. I'm going to give your aluminum pie plate trick a try!

  5. Oh, Vee ... I believe you when you say they are pesky, but he did provide material for a hilarious post today. Do you think you could tell him his job is now done and he will leave? Doubtful. Looks like that pellet gun may be getting a work out this spring.

  6. Great pictures and well written. Maybe you could put a bird cutout on the mirror. My MIL used to do that on her large window to discourage them from running into it. Maybe if he doesn't just see himself he will quit fighting with himself. Crazy birds...and they say sheep are stupid. lol

  8. Cute post, Vee. We have some annoying birds called grackles. I don't have a mirror for them to preen in, but they sure seem to know when I've filled the one feeder with sunflower seeds. They are so annoying because they hog the feeder and run off my other birds. The sparrows are getting just as bad at the finch feeder lately. Good luck getting rid of these pests! And thanks for the chuckle. :D

  10. And I'll bet your *favorite* cowbird part is....... The trail of "poops" which they leave, along your railing. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... Dang-birds!

  11. Oh I thank God for letting us enjoy his creation! I have read a couple of stories lately on birds viewing themselves in mirrors and glass. What fun, clean entertainment.

Oh my father-in-law would keep his little pellet gun near the door to run off the squirrels...LOL

  12. G'morning, Mizz Vee, I've just spent some time catching up on your posts. I have been away from much computer time due to 3 grands and I hanging out together for the last 10 days.Their parents were off on a fun anniversary trip to Hawaii and, yes, I am working on a post about THAT.:)

I know I have led a sheltered life but I've never, in my entire life, heard of a COWbird.
We have a lot of unwanted squirrels in our yard and I don't have a little air gun...I just throw rocks.:))

  13. We have only seen a few cow birds around here. Stellar Jays are the annoying birds at our house!

    Blessings!

  15. Cute post, Vee. But not so cute when it's happening to YOU. We used to have a "crazy window bird" in Ecuador. It would sit on the window sill of our bedroom and just hammer at the glass. Very annoying. And leave behind most unwelcome souvenirs.
I wish you all the best in ridding yourself of your cowbird.

  16. A cousin to our starlings...for sure! Good luck with sending the cowbirds packing. We have tried most every method to keep the starlings out of our barns...and to no avail.

  17. Vee you've given me my first good chuckle of the day and I really needed it! Your photos and text are are too funny!
I never heard of a cowbird before and I now know I don't like them - imagine making another bird sit on their eggs ..the nerve of them!

  18. Cowbirds are intersting and we see a few form time to time. Do not want TOO many of them!! Squirrels are our main problem! Pesky things even though they are so entertaining. We simply cannot afford for them to eat up all the good bird seed so we try to discourage them as much as possible!

  19. Our cowbirds aren't this pretty.... I do know they can really be a pest.
Our pest is a mockingbird.... he/she sings so loud! The song is pretty for a a few hours, but this one sings all day.... I'm not complaining, I'd miss the noise/song.

  20. They sure have an attitude :) I like birds that play well with others!

  21. Yeah...bu how do you milk 'em??

And what flavor milk do cowbirds have?

And..the female is S.M.A.R.T..getting someone else to raise her kids..where does she think she is?? Hollywood??
