Before I Forget
Marye @ Kettle and Cup is celebrating the fact that she has signed a contract to do a cookbook with a giveaway. How exciting is that?! I met Marye via La Tea Dah's Gracious Hospital-i-tea Blogathon. The button for which lives on my side bar and will take you to a site named "The Tea Ladies." Marye is one of them.
You can read more about Marye's news right *here.* Perhaps you'll join us in getting the word out. We don't have much longer...August 1 is the deadline.

We didn't go "touring" after all. The man was tired; I was tired. We stayed home and cleaned, gardened, did a few errands, shuffled furniture about, dragged an end table to my son's, and in the evening went for ice cream followed by a walk in the cemetery. We've been doing a lot of walking in the cemetery because it's so quiet and peaceful without all the traffic. We're usually the only ones there...well, of the vertical variety.
Then comes my favorite time of day when we each read a chapter of a book aloud. Our current one is One Man's Meat by E.B. White. It is a collection of essays written between 1938 and 1943. The common theme is concern about WWII. Each essay mentions the European conflict in some way, and it is easy to tell that the entire issue is churning away at White's insides despite his attempt to push down his anxiety with busy work on his salt-water farm in Maine — keeping chickens warm, getting rid of volumes of eggs, keeping machines in working order, biding time. He writes:
Countries are ransacked, valleys drenched with blood. Though it seems untimely I still publish my belief in the egg, the contents of the egg, the warm coal, and the necessity for pursuing whatever fire delights you.
Currently, E.B. White delights me and I think I've just found him another fan.
Now, before I forget, I must get my awards list ready; it's long overdue! Guess I'll work on that later today.
Have a great Wednesday, All. :D

Mr White was a favorite of Mammy's and so he became a favorite of mine. I think that is why I love the Essay form of writing so much. He made it look so easy. Walking through some of the lovely cemetaries around here is a pleasant way to get to know your forebears and their neighbors and I'm sure they enjoy hearing their names mentioned again. We're all a bit prideful, after all, even in death.
ReplyDeleteI'm going over to check out your friend's site, I love that teacup, lol!
hugs
Sandi
What a wonderful wat to spen an evening reading to each other. I love it!!!!.....Mary
ReplyDeleteMy husband reads to me too...bits and pieces from the newspaper. Drives me nuts. :)
ReplyDeleteI like the peace of cemeteries too. My favorite has a fountain and a goldfish pond and lots of big Victorian headstones.
I need to hunt up that book! Thanks for the tip Vee.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the link!
Vee,
ReplyDeleteMy husband goes to bed so early I would never have a chance to read to him. OK, he does get up at 4:30a.m. for work.
I'm already checked out the giveaway site you mentioned and I've never read the "Coffeehouse Mysteries". I'll have to get started today.
Here in the South a lot of people seem to walk around cemetaries for exercise. It's too darn hot for me to walk anywhere but to get another iced tea.

I love collections of essays, they are a good read especially in the summer. At the end of the day reading an essay is "just enough".
ReplyDeleteCemeteries are such peaceful places and around here there are some filled with elaborate headstones and mausoleums.

Oh no sweet friend, there are many fairies in jars created, this is just how I make mine...just for those who would like to know :) Maybe I should clarify this on the tutorial blog. Hope you have a wonderful day!!! xxoo, dawn
ReplyDeleteHi Vee...EB White sounds interesting..I love the idea of reading a chapter each night...We just might try that..BTW...I love your Smoopy Playlist...:)I might just listen for a bit if you don't mind....
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful 'day in the life...'! It brought back memories of my dad reading to my mom (often Reader's Digest)while she knit or sewed.
ReplyDeleteI posted a pic today of a cemetery we walked about recently. I enjoy visiting cemeteries...they are such a wonderful piece of personal history.
Oh my, thank you for the heads up about Marye, I'll have to stop by when I'm done working this evening! Home is where the heart is...I always have great "outing" intentions then end up staying home :). I force my George to read to me all the time but then he has been in radio his whole life! Gotta run, off to save the world soon! (or work ad I call it) LOL!
ReplyDeleteHave a Wonderful Wednesday!
Kathi :)
And I only thought he wrote Children's books. I will be adding some of his adult material to my library list.
ReplyDeleteI love the chapter reaidng at night idea. I read with my Ruth, but often as the bedtime ritual, not as entertainment. Although, one summer found the boys and I reading "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" in that manner. What fun!
Kettle & Cup is a new blog to me and sounds delightful! I'll visit her soon. How wonderful to get a book contract! Was it because of the writings on her blog?
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I do volunteer work in a large cemetery, so we often walk the grounds. It's a very pretty place, filled with birds and victorian era monumnets to look at. Maybe a future blog post! :-)
Reading a book chapter together to each other sounds so romantic! EB White is a wonderful author.
Hi Vee!
ReplyDeleteKettle & Cup is a new blog to me -- it sounds delightful and I'll visit her soon. How exciting for her to get a book contract!
My hubby & I often walk in the cemetery we volunteer in. It is very Victorian and has beautiful grounds and large monuments to look at. Maybe some day I'll do a blog post about it.
I love the idea of reading a book chapter together ...very romantic!
:-) EB White is wonderful!
Hugs, Pat
I thought EB White only wrote children's stories too.
ReplyDeleteYou're starting to sound like me with the ice cream. :-)
My hubby and I read together too. Isn't it wonderful! It's our special time. I love lovely old cemetaries. I think they are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that you and your honey are reading to each other. It sounds like such a sweet thing. It's as though you are sharing such an intimate thing reading the book together.
ReplyDeleteOh Vee, that book sounds really good. We're all history nuts here and are currently engrossed in the John Adams miniseries on DVD. It is fabulous. I learned from my dad yesterday that he actually has my grandfather's diary from his time overseas in WWII. I cannot wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Christi
You newlyweds and all your togetherness, I just love it.
ReplyDeleteEB White, now I haven't read his stuff but I looked at a room designed in his honor at a hotel we like to stay at on the coast. It has rooms dedicated to different authors. Does that count as knowing about EB White? No, I suppose not.
Happy day, friend.
Melissa
Hi Vee...what a great alternative to television! Books are far more interesting any day...how romantic too..
ReplyDeleteHave a Blessed day!

Delightful post, sounds like all is well with the honeymooners.

I have this book on my side table, where I read. I've had it several years, but just now picked it up to begin reading it, with great pleasure, and was amazed to read in your blog that you and your husband are also reading a pre-WWII book of essays.
