Oh I'd Love to Paint Those V-Matched Wall Boards

Those of you who've been reading this week know that I have been spending some time at the Country Living Living Room Gallery where I have been looking at lots of spaces trying to come
closer to my own current desires. Much of what I have was dictated by former homes, rooms, and colors.

If you read yesterday's post, you can see the wood planked walls that I have throughout my dining room, living room, and part of my kitchen. All the ceilings are also in this planking throughout and just as I suspected that it would do, it is darkening. I don't like darkening. I'm afraid that soon it will look like this.

When it could look more like this...
not that I'm a lover of white particularly, but it sure brightened up the space.

So these are some rooms I enjoyed, including the first at the top. Again, the first was too much white, but there are so many things I like about it. The furniture, the old tool box as a coffee table (mine's black), the eclectic collection of wall art, etc.

And I also like this room. Hmmmm, strange, because it is dark again. Perhaps it is the bright yellow door or maybe it is the wall of books or maybe it's the furniture or is it the threadbare carpet? Whatever it is, it isn't quite it.

Then there's this number...bright, cheerful, and with my favorite color yellow very prominent. Perhaps this lets me know that I like lots of color. I really do. There's no sense in denying that any longer.

Then I found it! A room where I love nearly every little thing about it. The warmth, the coziness, the color of the walls (well perhaps a titch lighter), the furniture, the reds, the golden hues, the hard wood floors.

Those curtains have to go, but other than that... So what have I learned? Mostly I've learned that rooms that have charmed me from ages and ages ago are still with me. Perhaps I just haven't grown up.

Thanks for looking! Have a great Friday...

  1. Looks perfect published, too! I always love your posts. When we had our 100+ year old home and doing a complete renovation, I loved the same color for walls that you do. I saw a magazine (can't remember which one) in which Jane Seymour had antiqued her walls by painting them white or off-white and then applying a glaze which gave them an antique effect - light, but still with that aged charm.

  2. Your walls are lovely, Vee. I also noticed the window to the right of the shelf. The panes and detail to it are wonderful.
    TV?......didn't notice it til later.
    Love puttering.

  3. I usually read your posts from Google Reader, and was pleasantly surprised this morning to see such a lovely blog makeover! So pretty! I wish GR would give us more than just text. Oh well...

You're itching for a change I see. Have you ever watched "Sarah's House" on HGTV? When she re-did the family room of the farm house, she painted the ceiling (old barn boards) a very pale gray - almost white. It turned out way cool! She does a lot of high chair rails with wainscoting, too, which is pretty. I'd love to see before and after photos when you work up enough ambition!

I can't wait to see what you end up doing...

  6. It is so much fun to play around with different looks and designs. I am not surprised at all by your choice. You love warm and comfy spaces. I think this reflects your personality.

  7. What a fun post. I would opt for the white rooms...but then change my mind to the warmth of the darker...smile. I think we are drawn to the white as it is crisp and clean but in the dark winter months....it just doesn't give us much of a sense of home.

  8. You like what you like....and you know what that is...and that's a good thing! You like warm and cozy and country...light and bright and airy...and it all suits you just fine. Have fun playing within those parameters!

  9. I'm still drawn to the first picture. But with no touch of blues though, for me.

Yes, I know it's VERY white! Which intrigues me. Guess because I know I'll never have it. ,-) White on white on white on white on white... ,-)

But the issue here is, what resonates with you! So glad you found it!

And I can't leave without saying how wonnnnnnnnderful it is, to read happy-homemaking-kinds of posts here. Because it seems so much more relaxing, for you! To be able to do such ponderings and etc. To relax and let your mind wander to decor colors and the like. It makes me happy for you.

    Gentle hugs...

  11. I love the library room with the yellow door! Gorgeous! All of the rooms are really beautiful. It goes to remind me that I don't have one particular style, I am rather eclectic. Country Living has the best galleries!

Have a great weekend, dear Vee.

  12. Oh I definitely like the last one, too, Vee - just my style. If I lived on the ocean, the white would be nice, but I'm afraid me and white just wouldn't get along for very long. I don't do "dark" either. I need light and sunshine - and Yellow fills that need in me, too! I like comfy cozy - not formal - I like to be relaxed and for my guests to be relaxed, too. You thinking about some renovations? Can't wait to hear!

Have a wonderful restful weekend! Hope you're feeling 100%!!!

  13. Tearing out pictures from magazines and tossing them into a file works to help me clarify my interior decorating decisions. The same elements start showing up over and over again and prove what has staying power with me!

Of course it is difficult to find the kind of look that I like. Lately all the home magazines are featuring the exact shade of green that I used in my living room-my husband notes I am always ahead of my time!

  14. You've shared some cozy rooms.........I could live any just about any of them. Esp the one overlooking the ocean or the book-lined room with comfy chairs!

  15. Your walls are nice just they are, but I can surely understand wanting a change! I had off white walls for years and last year decided a change was in order. I, make that we, painted them in a soft shade of beige and I love it! When we moved into this house, the LR had paneling that was dark so we just painted over it. Turned out fine and saved us the mess of tearing it off and putting up sheetrock.

The kitchen area was wallpapered and the background was off white. It came off...ugh...never will I wallpaper again...and we painted the kitchen Martha Stewart's Barn Red! The kids talked me into it, I wasn't sure I'd like it. I love it! Anyway, I've enjoyed your post and the last one too. Your lamps arranged together look great. Love that idea! I'll have to check out the CL website as I need a new sofa and want to redo the wall behind it. I'm sure I'll find some great ideas. Thanks for sharing.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  16. The second last and last photos are my favourites.
I'm in love with yellow too! :)

I grew up in a very dark house. Dark paneling, carpeting, furniture etc. I cannot STAND rooms to be dark now. I need bright, light colours. :)

  17. We have such similar tastes! Yellow is my favorite color too! Especially creamy, buttery, soft yellow--I'm going to paint my bedroom a creamy buttercream soon! That old loveseat looks so much like the one in that last photo (my fave too)! My kitchen and adjoining family room is paneled in a darker wood with a reddish hue - much like Mary's library in dearlittleredhouse.blogspot.com--I can't quite talk myself into painting the paneling in that room, but the kitchen is a CAVE and I hope to paint it a creamy color this year!

  18. OMG, I want that room with the yellow french door leading to that library. sigh. Yet, I love all of your choices. So nice to see that you are lost in dreams, I just love staring at blank spaces and dreaming of what could be done.

  19. Hi Vee

We had dark wood paneling and one red brick wall for many years in our home in the 80's. Then one day I said "enough" and we sheet rocked over it all and painted the walls an eggshell white. It really made the rooms appear larger and brighter. I've never regretted it.

We are on our way back from a wonderful vacation ...it will be good to see home again!

  21. I am the same as you Vee. I love the room with all of the books and the wooden beams... Sigh... I love rooms with history and charm. I think the wood on your walls is beautiful! I wouldn't change a thing.....

  22. l loved them all Vee, Thanks for sharing. One of my favorite colors this year has been yellow, and maybe some blue tucked in here and there. I have been so busy with apples I haven't had time to do any decorating nor cleaning. lol

  23. That was fun to look at all of the different rooms. I'll have to visit the Country Living site and play around a bit.
I think what I like about the first picture is that while there is a lot of white, they also have a creamy shade on one of the walls. It makes it a bit more interesting to me.

  24. I like the same rooms that you do! I prefer light, and I can't live without color either. =)

that i have never met you or been
in your home, is that room looks

charming, lovely, sensible but a bit
    whimsical. it's all there!

    bravo!
