The Pie

The apple pie looked good enough, except for the fact that I carved a cherry on top instead of an apple, but that's nothing, right? However, when John cut into it, there was nothing but air. Something went awry — perhaps my apple choice. I usually use Cortlands for apple pie and this time I thought I could get away with Macs. Oh well. Next year! (Hope that John doesn't read this or he may keel over.) Yeah, well, that's how much I love making apple pies.

This all reminds me of last week when I made my famous chicken casserole. It took several bites before I realized what was wrong. It was my famous chicken casserole minus the chicken! How does one forget the chicken? Guess that I've been a bit preoccupied.

If you'd like either recipe (as if you would after all this), you can find them in my sidebar somewhere. It'll be a bit like playing leapfrog, but that's a fun game, eh?

This post makes me feel like composing an Irish blessing...

May your pie be filled with apples
May your casserole be filled with chicken
And when it comes to fightin' the devil
May you not take a lickin'

  1. You're supposed to carve an apple into the top?? Who knew. I'm lucky if I actually get a homemade pie as far as the oven. Never had that talent. Looks wonderfully tasty though. I'll be there this afternoon.

  2. OH I smiled at your Irish blessing Vee. So ..the apples cooked down too much? They were still there though.. who doesn't love a bit of applesauce pie? I know lots of people who don't mind a vegetarian chicken casserole now and then too.

  4. It's always a puzzle when we realize that we've forgotten an ingredient or an important step in a craft project - something we've done for years. I'm sure with everything you've had going on in your life, everyone (including you and all of us) can empathize with a missing ingredient...or finding salt and pepper in the refrigerator and leaving the soda out of your biscuit recipe. Oh, that wasn't you, that was me!!

  5. Oh no!
I agree. Apple pies are a lot of work. John (yes that's my DH's name, too!) loves 'em, but he only gets about one a year.....
Yes. That's right. An October sky. How apt!
Have a wonderful day, Vee. I'm still so glad I know what you look like now!

  7. I'm sure it tasted real good...once you got past the air and into the apples! I'm into pie-making mode for the second time this week...today it is pumpkin.

  8. Apple pie! I could go for a slice right now, air or not, since I haven't had breakfast yet. Yours looks good. I make them about as often as you do...lol.

Loved your post below. And your haircut is cute and so are you! What a beautiful complexion you have. I'd have to hurt anyone who took a pic of me without makeup! :)

  9. When we were kids, I remember my mother made tuna casserole without the tuna once...lol

The pie looks yummy. There's a church in our area that is offering WA apples for about 50 cents a lb...I think I am going to go get some :)

    Robin

  10. You are too cute! Lucky to get a homemade pie outta me, I am terrible with the crust. Try Gravenstein apples, they are the VERY BEST of them all.

    Have a beautiful weekend.

Thanks for the out loud chuckle. At least I am not the only one who gets surprised sometimes!

  13. BTW, I Googled the question what apples make the best pies.... this link seems to have good info:

  15. In my "neck of the woods," we ONLY use Macs, for Apple Pies. So, I'd not say it was that.

Just not enough apples in the pie, I'd say.

I take it you mean, that when it was cut into, there was a large area beneath the crust, empty of filling...

"Uncle A." peels/cuts up a ton of apples, for my Apple Pie. So.... Try more. But don't give up on Mac's. :-)

Oh yes, remind John that "Uncle A." does the peeling and cutting. :-)

  16. Well, that pie looks wonderful! Julia Child's says never to admit to a mistake in the kitchen. Your actual dessert was "Buttery Pie Crust With Apple", instead of apple pie....

    Penny

    p.s. cute blessing.

  17. Loved your little ditty at the end. Yes, I would say you have a lot on your mind right now. I haven't made a pie in at least 15 years so no advice from me. I imagine your chicken casserole tasted good anyway.

I'm not fond of chicken so I leave a space on the end for me so I only get the things I like.

  18. hey, your "chicken" casserole sounds perfect for my new veggie lifestyle! And, I'm all about the crusts on pies..I figure the filling is just something the crust casn hold on to :-)

  19. Beautiful pie, even if it didn't turn out just the way you wanted it. I am sure it tasted absolutely yummy! Audley has been handling all of the cooking around here this week. I bet he wishes leaving the chicken out of the chicken casserole was the least of his worries. LOL
Your Irish blessing brought a belly chuckle...I didn't need it, but I totally couldn't couldn't help myself! Have a wonderful weekend!

  20. Your pie looks so good, Vee, even if you say it was full of air. Now a chicken casserole without the chicken.....hmmmm..I'm not too sure about that..lol!

One year I made bar cookies and realized I forgot the sugar after I had poured the batter into the pan. I mixed the sugar right there in the pan and those cookies came out better than ever!

  21. The chicken casserole and the pie both sound great. I will have to snatch up your recipe for the casserole but I am sure my dh would like it with chicken better ;) Have a nice weekend!

  22. I, too, have forgotten the chicken in my chicken casserole!! It happened some years ago and I tried to slip some in under the crust but alas....it was too late!! We can't remember EVERYTHING, now can we??

  23. Thanks for visiting me today. I always carve the same butterfly on all my pies, but I like that you did a cherry eventhough it was apple.
