A Gathering

I should save this photo for Halloween...

Something told the vultures
It was time to go,
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered, —"Snow."

Apologizing to Rachel Field for borrowing lines from Something Told the Wild Geese

Oh, perhaps I could have saved the picture for Christmas because they do look a wee bit like partridges in a pear tree—from a great distance.

Anyway, they are steadily gathering. I don't know where they're going. I'll just be glad that they are gone. So many treetops are broken and bruised this year because of these things.

I saw Canadian geese v-ing overhead squonking on their way about three weeks ago, and starlings all in a row upon on a high wire, and now the vultures. Have you seen any flocks gathering?

  1. The Canada geese have really been gathering lately! And the blue jays are back at the feeder ... definite signs that colder weather is coming.

We don't have vultures thankfully! I've never seen them but don't think I'd want them around either.

  2. I heard more geese in September than October...though we do have geese in our area year round.

I've never seen that many vultures in one place. Kinda creepy.

  3. Mostly I've seen Canadian geese! Love your photos! You made me chuckle over the "Partridge in a Pear tree" comment!

  4. I haven't thought of that poem in years! I remember singing the song in high school choir years and years ago. Thanks for stirring a memory!

  5. Grakles...and lots of them. I endured my annual car "splatter" this morning, and hope they've moved south! Nasty.

  6. It is THE perfect Halloween picture, but I love your more kindly thought of thinking of them as partridges in a pear tree.

    Great picture!

  7. Close enough to Halloween to count. I know you, you'll find something better anyway. Your picture does look spooky. As for flocks, yes, the Canadian geese are always squawking overhead. Hopefully, those nasty creature will move on soon.

  8. The Canada Geese stay here for the winter, leaving their reminders on any patch of available grass. We'll soon see the Bald Eagles gather to feast on the dying salmon, followed by the vultures, which will gather in the trees just like in your photo. I'll have to get down to the stream to get some pictures and post them.

  9. -giggles- Halloween Pic for sure! And you could Photoshop a full moon in the sky, behind them, or something. -chuckle-

So, turkey vultures fly south? Guess so, since you seem to figure they'll be gone soon.

Not exactly the most beautiful of birds, are they? But then, suppose they are neat, to another turkey vulture.

Oh wow! Sounds like I should hang up my keyboard, when I start writing comments like the above. LOL!

The russet woods stood ripe to be stripped, but were yet full of leaf.
The purple of heath-bloom, faded but not withered, tinged the hills...
Fieldhead gardens bore the seal of gentle decay; ... its time of
flowers and even of fruit was over."

  10. Oh, what do you call a bunch of turkey vultures? I mean... Like a "herd" of cows and a "gaggle" of geese and a "murder" of crows...?

And where did "a murder of crows" come from?????

OK, I'll go away now. -giggles-

  12. Vultures!!!?? shivers

I've noticed the black birds gathering. I love it when they all take off at the same time-it's so dramatic!
And of course, the Canadian Geese off to poop on somebody else's shoreline.
    You're welcome America. :)

  14. Lovely photo. Would make a perfect Christmas card! We still have the song birds here in Texas!

  15. Before I left for our two week trip to California there were many Cardinals coming to our bird feeders, singing beautiful songs.

Home again --it's good to be back!

  16. They certainly do look a bit spooky sitting in the tree like a bunch of vultures waiting for something. Oh wait, they ARE vultures!! Spooky name, too!

I've seen some geese flying overhead. They are always fun to see. We still have some bluebirds hanging around, so I guess they'll winter over. That reminds me to get my bird feeders all out and filled up soon. I only keep a gold finch feeder up in the summer. The pesky grackles gobble up everything in sight in the summer.

  17. Yes, I've lots of buzzards around here, too. But they stay here year-round just waiting for a tasty morsel to get squashed on the road. Now, I DO have lots of blue-birds here. They fight over the houses and are so happy when I go out and fill the birdbaths!

Other beings are gathering - at Hobby Lobby and Michaels and the mall and Walmart and Target - they are flocking to the sales, the Christmas stuff, the fall decorations!

  18. Lots and lots of flocks of birds that seem to be hanging out in fields that have been harvested. They resemble a dark cloud when they take flight, and then settle down again. Amazing that they never seem to run into one another. I've also noticed that about fish swimming in schools. Perfect order! What an ingenious Creator!

  20. When we blog...we realize how much we have in common, no matter how many miles apart we live! I took phots at the library on Friday of a huge flock of birds up in the trees...look a lot like yours! They were so noisy, that I went back to my car and got my camera to take pics. I think they were Grackles! ♥

  21. Hi Vee

Yep, we saw a flock of Canadian Geese just this morning. Mr Op commented that they were flying so closely together how could they manage?

I'd go for a partridge in a pear tree:)

    Enjoy your week!

  22. "What told the vultures to gather?" I wonder! Let them go, snow or no snow!

Thank you for your lovely post today. I've thought along these lines alot too lately. There are certainly times, I find, when I need to keep silent. In fact, the Lord seems to be impressing that upon me more and more.
