Vintage Stove Top

Oh it is a wonderful thing that I really like old and shabby. For one thing, I can sometimes afford old and shabby. When I saw this vintage stovetop at the flea market late Sunday, I nearly swooned. What did I like? Everything. I liked the scale, the warming oven, the wheat motif on the doors. I decided that if it were there the next day it would be mine.

However, the next day Molly fell ill with extreme itching and off we went to see the vet where we left him $151 and something cents. Ai yi yi. No vintage stovetop. By Monday evening, while watching Dancing With the Stars, I was getting kind of twitchy myself just thinking about the stovetop and wondering if some other gal had snagged it.

By eight in the morning, we were at our favorite breakfast restaurant only to discover that a pipe had burst and they were not open. Fine. Straight to the flea market without breakfast. Nothing like doing business on an empty stomach. The owner said, "I can tell when people are on a mission." John did some dickering and got the piece for ten per cent less. (It was already marked down.) Perfect! Even more perfect was that it fit into the trunk. =D

Off for a leisurely breakfast without worrying about whether the stovetop would be there. Funny thing is that on the way back home, I think I saw the base of this stove sitting on the side of the road. I don't want the base preferring a more cobbled look, but still...'twas interesting.

Here it is waiting for its scrubbing.

And here it is in place...

And here it is side by side with the photoshopped stovetop seen in yesterday's post...

The photoshopping really did help me decide that it would work and that I would like it. I stole the stovetop for photoshopping from this picture.

Isn't she sweet? Six thousand dollars sweet. You can check it out right *here.*

This is what happened to the platters that switched places with my former cookbook nook.

I don't know if you can tell, but the faux leaves are held on the branches by those itty-bitty clothespins available in craft stores. Love them!

Now all I have to do is tidy up the place. Funny how bringing something new into the house creates so much of a mess.

So tell me, what was the last thing you dragged home?

  1. We brought a dresser back from Mom's to hold candle making supplies in the dining room. We had taken it over to sell in a yard sale. Hmmmm, I think I am very happy it didn't sell! LOL

  2. You have such a talent for seeing something and having a vision for what to do. (I must have a talent for something, but I'm thinking about what it could be!) I get great ideas from you - to include using those little clothespins!

Actually, when we downsized 3 years ago, I haven't been bringing many great finds home. I'm beginning, though, to look around our place and thinking that I need a few changes.

Love your stovetop and what you've done. Great idea!

  3. I LOVE it! It looks great - I like the red cupboard as well!

I can't remember the last thing I dragged home...I have been on the purging side, mostly old stored stuff.

    Have a great day!

  4. That was a job well done. I love it. I am not dragging anything home these days. Trying to get some things out. The reason I am making the grands slippers is because I am trying to use up most of my yarn stash. Blessings

  5. Soooooooo happy that it was still waiting for you!

Kinda' scary lead up, to getting it though... Molly vet run (one *bad* thing)... Restaurant closed (two *bad* things)... Yikes!

So glad the "Bad Things Come In 3'es" was broken, by getting the stove top!!! That was a Red Letter Day, I'd say!!! :-)

Oh and to answer your question, we don't often drag anything home. 'Cause we are still trying to cull *stuff.*

    Gentle hugs,
"October, here’s to you. Here’s to the heady aroma of the frost-kissed apples, the wine-y spell of ripened grapes, the wild-as-the-wind smell of hickory nuts and the nostalgic whiff of that first wood smoke." ~ Ken Weber

  6. WOW! It looks even better than imagined!! Perfect look on your cabinet. I'm so thrilled for you that it was still there. Once you get something in your mind like that you definitely are on a "mission". You got the find of the decade with that one Vee. And your hubby is so sweet to make your dream come true!

The last thing we drug home is a medicine cabinet for my hubby's bathroom. Looks like new, but is a mirrored white med cabinet that looks old style. It's just waiting to be installed and HAS to look better than the 70's thing that's there!! And it only cost $25 at a resale shop... even better.

    Hugs, sherry

  7. I can totally relate. I love how you did your homework and then went straight away to dicker on the stove top.
I can also relate to having something new motivating a clean house.

  8. It's a good look, Vee. I am going to have to learn to photo shop. It's a skill that's serving you well these days!

  9. The stovetop looks perfect where you placed it! And I'm glad it was still there for you. I know how it is to have your heart set on something and return only to find it gone. I saw a set of plates in a flea market once and couldn't make up my mind, when I did and went back they were gone!
My house isn't all that big and it's probably a good thing, because I see all kinds of things I'd like to have! The last big (and unplanned) purchase was several years ago when I fell in love with a Hoosier cabinet at an antique store. I thought I paid too much for it at the time, but now I see the prices in stores are much higher. I wouldn't sell it for a profit tho, I love it.
    Have a wonderful day!

  10. Hi Vee,
Obviously, this treasure was meant just for you! It looks quite at home where you have placed it. What a great find!

    Happy day to you!

  11. It was meant to be...that you should have that vintage stove topper. So glad it was waiting there for you! Good bargaining John! You have it well placed and it is even nicer than the photo you snaggedm adding such warmth to the kitchen wall.

Hmmm...my lastest find? Oh, a second-hand, wooden chest which we repainted, recushioned and placed at the foot of our bed to catch the folded-down covers at night (and a convenient place to sit while we put on our shoes!) Love those affordable additions to our homes!

  12. That turned out really cute, Vee! I also had fun looking at your "redesigns" of your garage. You're quite handy with Photoshop! (Something I haven't tackled yet.) Bess

  14. BRAT! That's all I can say...not really.

I love it it looks perfect and you are soo lucky that it was there when you went back.

I haven't been ab;e to drag anything but my tired butt home lately. But today's our anniversary so I'm hoping that we do some junquing this weekend.

    Enjoy it!

  15. I like it...it looks wonderful in your kitchen!
The last thing we brought home was a solid maple table that my hubby found at the thrift store for only $6. It has leaves that fold down on either side, so it fits nice into my little office/craft room. We use it as a desk and work space and it will come in handy when we need extra tables for the holidays! :)

    Blessings!

  16. Yay...you got it! It looks great. I can't say I have ever seen one like it.

I don't think I've been dragging much home lately...but have taken a few things out. Making room! ☺

  17. I WANT ONE!

You scored, Vee! It looks so good on top of your jelly cabinet! It gives it height and lots more storage. I absolutely love it! Ok, I think one of those would look super on top of my pie safe. I shall be on the lookout now. That would be the NEXT thing I drag into the house!

  18. I have read and re-read this post to be sure I absorbed all of the wonderful details.
The stove top looks great where you have placed it. I must admit I would have never thought to do something like that, much less to photoshop the idea first. Heck, I don't even know how to photoshop :). I think I need to figure it out as it sure beats dragging something big home and realizing it doesn't work out.

I'm glad you pointed out the itty bitty clothespins. Love that idea. Something else I would not have thought of, but now may have to try.

As for dragging things home ... I last dragged home 5 pretty glasses with fall leaves on them from the thrift shop.

  19. Oh I need that for my newly decorated kitchen...now I know what to look for...love it, even the red base would go well in my kitchen.

    Great job...very creative.

Oh I am dragging things out of the garage and giving them new life right now...I have my own pile of junk..I mean treasures

  20. This is wonderful, Vee! It looks great with your things arranged on it. I can't wait to be able to drag things home from thrift stores and yard sales. In December I get double knee replacement and can begin putting walking back into my life!

  21. What a great find.
At an auction we came home with a GIANT red round coke sign. That one was for Ken.

  22. Adorable! Golly, I haven't drug anything old and shabby lately except for my sweet hubby, LOL!

  23. Well well well Vee, you have quite the eye! I wouldn't have thought to use it with your existing piece, but it's perfect!
The last thing I drug home....hmmm?
There is a fun consignment shop I pass on my way to school every day, it resides in an old feed store. Sitting on the front dock was a piece that had been "cobbled" together and it was love at first sight :)
It is 1/2 of a dresser or something with wood pickets added on the back. It's a potting bench of sorts?
When I recieved some money as a birthday gift I knew just what to spend it on! My husband and I drove over in the truck to pick it up, he has absolutely no appreciation for shabby chic and couldn't believe anyone would pay money for it.
We loaded it in the truck, closed the tailgate, and CRACK TINKLE TINKLE went the glass on the back window :(
Ooooooops, it ended up costing a bit more that I had planned, but I love it just the same :)
I'll have to post a pic.

P.S. We don't have fleamarkets here?

  24. Oh!! I love it Vee! I am so glad it was still there for you.

I dragged home a French settee a couple of days ago and today I dragged home a French chair and matching footstool. Both need to be painted and recovered, so it will be a while before I show them...

  25. Vee
Your warming oven has much more character than that new photshop version! I love the wheat stalks on it.
I haven't dragged anything home lately, but will head down to my MIL's in a couple of weeks for the final clearing of her place before she moves. So who knows what will come home with me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Gosh, that is an AWESOME idea. You are so smart, Miz Vee. Just cute as can be.....
AND, I like the large, single window MUCH better than the two little ones but...it is one of those things that can be done as you can afford it. If ya'll are like us, there's a thousand things around the house that need doing and we just pick the most pressing and go from there.:))

    ReplyDelete
  27. That is just perfect Vee! I really like it and you got a great deal. Bringing in something new does create havoc with moving the old stuff around. I haven't brought in anything lately - big or small. Well, except for a sweet vegetable bowl that matches a whole set of dishes still in my mil's house. If I can find room, the dishes may just move in here. I want to creat havoc!

  28. Today is my day to visit Vee!

I discovered your blog a short time ago, via Sue at Pear Tree Lane Farmhouse...via Deanna at Creekside Cottage...and via Debbie at no spring chicken...and probably a few other places where I stop in from time to time! But just as I found you, I began this 31-day blog series, and I have been too busy to do a lot of chatting, although I have been reading all along.

I have found A Haven for Vee to be a charming bit of bloggy space! I loved tagging along on your visit to the Fryeburg Fair and your visit with Deanna, peering at your foliage mosaics, and meeting the new baby. (I even stumbled on your hidden place behind the scenes...very moving.)

So don't ask me why today is the day to stop by for a chat. ;-) Maybe it was the stove top, maybe just because everyone else in the house is busy and I had a few minutes to myself? But I do love the stove top! It is quite the fine, and you have quite the eye. (And a bit of persistence!)

The last thing I dragged home was probably groceries...but a few weeks ago, my husband brought home an old Singer sewing machine (the kind built into a table) from his brother's house, and this sewing machine originally belonged to his great-gandmother! Mind you, it's going to take some fixing up (maybe quite a bit!), but what a find!

P.S. I don't always leave comments that are this long.

P.S.S. I have word verification, so don't feel obligated to "chat" with me! (Really.)

  30. How charming and lovely! It's perfect!!! I'm so glad it was there for you when you went back for it.

What did I drag home? Well, I had a yard sale a few weeks ago and hauled my mothers wooden, roll-top bread box out of storage and put it on the table to sell --- for next to nothing. It didn't sell. So --- yesterday I decided to discover it's worth, so looked online and found similar ones selling for $40. The bread box was in my mother's kitchen for as far back as I can remember. It's a bit worn around the edges, so I spiffed it up with a liberal coating of olive oil and a buffing cloth. It looked to revived that I decided to keep it! It now sits on a side table in my dining room, all arranged as a shelf for tiny books, a teapot, old silver salt shakers, and a maple-leaf shaped bottle of syrup. Hmmm - we were on the same wave length --- you way over there --- and me here. Isn't it fun creating and decorating, especially when it involved repurposing and recycling?

  31. I so love this stove top! I can see why it stayed on your mind and you had to have it. So charming and obviously fits perfectly in your home! I would love to bring something home. OK, several somethings, but with the big move looming over me like the danged rooster that refuses to leave my front porch I can't bring nothing home. =(
Oh well. I'll find something really cool after we move and there won't be any excuses to be made! =)

    Have a wonderful evening!

  32. That really looks great! I haven't brought anything too wonderful home...our garage sales are just now starting to wind up!!

  33. You have such a wonderful knack of making the two entirely different pieces go together. Really like it.

I drug (dragged?) home a seventies? style swag lamp (fake Tiffany - white and blue instead of oranges and browns). It is still in the car. Hopefully, it will replace the current broken lamp.

  34. I need to learn how to use PhotoShop. What a great idea to see how it would look .....

I love your purchase and what you've done with it! The red cabinet is wonderful too. This is such a great 'shabby chic ' look!!! I love it!!!!

I'd love to go shopping and find something to add to our house and change the look...

  37. I love your find! I have the bottom section of an old kitchen cupboard with the flour bin drawers. We found it at grandma's farm and haven't decided how to use it yet. Coffee table?
