My son and daughter-in-law gave me a genealogy program with three months of online membership to Ancestry.com. It's been sitting on my shelf calling my name. Thing is...once the research bug has bitten...it's hard to shake yourself free. I know. I've been bitten before.
But little things like looking for *penny postcards* (eta: this link no longer works) can be a lot of fun. I'm sorry that this will only work for the U.S., but you might find it interesting to click on your state, find your county, and see what's there. I found ever so many things of interest even if I was unable to find my own hometown.
Let me know if you find something fascinating!
I didn't know this site existed. How fun! There are a lot for Lancaster..and a couple from Centre County where I grew up.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this.
cool. I am going to check it out now.
ReplyDeleteI found two postcards of my hometown! I'll be posting those sometime in the future!
ReplyDeleteMy sister and her family are Mormon's. They've done our family's geneology waaay back. It's very nice to look at those names and wonder about the people.. :)

what a great website! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI went to the website and found Waldwick, NJ where I grew up. The picture was of the train station!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis was fun. There were not any for my little county, but I found some for the neghboring counties. Good post. Have a great weekend...m.
ReplyDeleteVery cool website. I didn't find anything from where I live now but enjoyed seeing a postcard of Ocean House on Watch Hill, Westerly, RI. The place fascinated me as a child. We drove by it often on our rides to the ocean. Like many old places, it is now destroyed in favor of condominiums. Thanks for the memories. It was fun! Kathy
ReplyDeleteOhh thank you for the Penny Post Card site! There are many from my area, but not from the tiny town I grew up in either.
ReplyDeleteBut Chauncey Olcott's 'Inniscarra' is not far from my home. :-)
Anddddd... this site brought back an old, old memory. My husband lived part of his growing up, in the town next to mine. But I guess you had to have been born and bred here, like me, to remember a Dr. Gow. Whom I never knew, but remember hearing of the name.
And Dr. Gow's residence is pictured in one of the post cards.
Thank you for the fun!

That's so funny - here I am in the DNA for genealogy industry (my job) and I didn't not only know this site existed, but when I saw your title thought "Wow - when were postcards a penny??" Thanks for this - it's FUN!
ReplyDeleteI've been on this site before and had forgotten about it! Great find!
ReplyDeleteThat was fun although it didn't have my county. I hope you have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, I found out that there are 7 towns in our state named Sulfur Springs. Fun!
ReplyDeleteWow - this is a really great resource! I love old postcards and always look at them at the flea markets and antique malls. I usually see many I like, but they can get pretty expensive. So nice that people are sharing them online for free!
ReplyDeleteI think it would be so much fun to visit the sites where some old postcard pictures were shot and take a picture from the same angle today. I really love then and now pictures - so interesting . . . and sometimes sad, to see the changes over time. Sadly, many things would just be completely gone - and replaced with something like a parking lot!!
