Last night found me trying this new method of peeling potatoes. I first saw it on a Japanese site a few years ago and promptly forgot about it until... Well first the photo showing me peeling a potato.
Yes, I test everything I present to you. The point is that it really does work! You can see Dawn Wells do it even better on the video clip from You Tube. It's less than two fascinating minutes long. (The other fascinating thing is that Miss Wells was born in 1938. Sigh.)
When it comes time to making potato salad, I hope that I remember this one. Oh wait! I don't peel my potatoes for potato salad. Hmmm, this may just work to amaze your friends the way the banana trick did.
Heading off to do a little dance of joy that winter is so nearly done... Perhaps you'll be doing a happy dance, too!
When my grandmother was a girl, her mother made her peel the peels if she took off too much potato with the knife. If only she had known this trick.....wait, did they have ice cubes during the depression?? In any case, I do peel my potatoes for salad so I'm going to give this a try. Doing the happy spring dance this weekend in Virginia......Kathy
ReplyDeleteOh my...I don't know what is more amazing...the potatoe trick or that fact she was born in 1938. May we all look that good at her age! Anyway...no dance of spring here yet...well...if the rain lets up maybe. I did see a pile of snow on a construction site yesterday when did a site visit so there is still some around here and there. Good Grief!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Vee!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try that method because I always seem to catch a nail or finger tip on the peeler. :P I absolutely LOVE the pocket banner you made!! it is gorgeous!! Would you let me post an image of it on The Moth with a link back to your site? Let me know!
xoxo~
Abbie
Good morning! Very neat post! I mentioned YOU in my post this morning! Hope you can stop by!

I have the same potato peeler that I had when I first got married!! My daughter has bought me a new one that I just didn't like and went back to using my old one.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to give this way a try sometime though I'm a pretty fast potato peeler after all these years! :-)
1938 - that would make her 71!!
Hi Vee,
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, I didn't think there was any other way to peel a potato,I am certainly going to try this!!!
I think Dawn needs to show her secrets for looking so young.I am amazed at how young she looks.
As for spring, I am going to go and look for her today, if you find her before I do please tell her that I am waiting for a visit also.
Have a great day.
Blessings,
Sue
Hmmmm... that's really cool! I'll have to try to remember that one. I hate peeling potatos!!
ReplyDeleteLaura
I don't peel my potatoes ever....my mashed potatoes always have peel in them. Lots if vitamins in those peels...LOL
ReplyDeleteActually I am a lazy cook
So are you planning to implement the method on a regular basis? It looks quick and simple...but I'm quite stuck to the old ways. We'll see.
ReplyDeleteBorn in 1938...I'm doing the math...and thinking it must be trick photography.
That's terrific.......and it's MARY ANNE. She's still so cute. That's a really neat trick. I'm going to remember that the next time I'm making potato salad.
ReplyDeleteI think it's really cool that you test these things in your test kitchen.

Thanks for sharing that Vee!. I'll definitely be giving that a try!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Catherine
Can't wait to show Mr. B this trick! He'll think I'm amazing..oh wait..you're amazing for showing us - that make us all amazing women, right?
ReplyDeleteYes, spring has sprung here too! I am right in the middle of rose pruning season. My heart be still!
ReplyDeleteWill definitely try the potato trick.
Oh Vee. ..I loved this. . I would never peel a fresh white potato but an older russet .. why sure I'll try it.
ReplyDeleteOh. .and guess what ..I was just at my local safeway store. .and terry said ..don't they still sell macintosh toffee in little bite size pieces. .I looked and there it was. .
Next time I send you a treat. ..you can have "fresh" macintosh toffee. . smile.
Wonderful tip! I do hope you will dance my way, I have a carpet of daffodils just waiting for you to tiptoe through! Have a great afternoon!
ReplyDeleteWow, I don't know what impressed me more the tip or her skin! Is this clip recent?
ReplyDeleteWish I would've seen this last week I made 5lbs of Potato Salad this weekend!
Thanks for the tip:)
Just like skinning tomatoes except for them it is a quick dip in and out of hot then cold water.
ReplyDeleteDon't think I would want to have to prepare all that ice just to peel potatoes though.
It looks great......
ReplyDeleteLOL! A friend sent this video to me a few days ago! It is a great trick! I love to eat the potato skins whenever possible as they are nutritious, so I keep mine on most of the time.
ReplyDeleteHope you had a fun day!
What a great tip! I will have try this out next time I peel potatoes.
ReplyDeleteVee,
ReplyDeleteFabulous, what a quick and easy method. But Mary Ann teaching us was really special. Gee she looks good for her age, doesn't she, it must have been all that island weather.
Karen
What a neat tip! Thanks for sharing! And I am joining you in the Happy Spring Dance! woohoo! ~hugs, Rhonda :)
ReplyDeleteOK OK...questions...
ReplyDeleteSo she cooked the potato for about 15 min and then peeled it. Do you think a potato that size was cooked already?? Do you peel it and then put it back in the water to continue cooking??
Elenka, yes, you must finish cooking it. If you don't take the skin off while it's still firm, the potato will break up (like mine was doing) before you get the skin off. Good question!
ReplyDeleteVee,
ReplyDeleteI came over to quite your curiosity ;c0 We ate Schlotzsky's ~ The Original Regular, we have to drive a good 45 minutes to have one so we don't have them very often. I am never able to eat the whole thing but I give it a try! I am sure they are oaks and equally sure they were daffodils ;c) I don't think you'll see me reposing among the posies any time soon. I have a horrid squinty look on my face from facing the sun. Sigh, I just don't photograph well. I realized after your comment on the barn that I probably have not ever shown it in its entirety, I'll have to do that soon. I hope you will be able to sleep now that all these burning questions have been answered Hee Hee!
Hi Vee!
ReplyDeleteYour table looks beautiful! There's just something so special about the table being all dressed in it's finest. Of course I sure know the other look of papers and files and mail etc etc etc!
Great tip on the potato peeling! I will use it the next time I have to peel a bunch. I never did like peeling sticky cooked potatoes! Ishhh!!
Have a good day!
Hugs, Sherry
Cool idea!
ReplyDeleteBut no way! "Mary Ann" was not, not, not born in 1938! Or if she was, she has "a portrait in the attic"! Harrumph. So there. ;-)
I harrumph, because 'Aunt Amelia' was born in 1937. And though my skin is very good for my age, I do not look like "Mary Ann." And don't tell me that "The Professor" invented a Youth Potion for her. ,-)
Then again, maybe he did. >,-)
Aunt Amelia
Wow, that is amazing, I must start doing it this way. peeling potatoes is one of my most dreaded chores of cooking. Hard to believe that "maryann" was born is 1938. She does look amazing and still chipper as a little bird.
