Once in a Blue Moon

There are a few things that I would like to chat about today. Perhaps you have an opinion or suggestion for me that I can put to work! My blogging friends always have such good advice.

First, though, here are three shots of the moon taken over the past few days. That Blue Moon is already down to 93% as of last night so looks something like an egg wobbling on a counter.

Since getting the smaller Nikon and putting the Canon aside, moon shots have been a challenge. The first photo (on the left) was set on auto; the middle photo followed Lovella's instructions provided *here* and gave me a little better result; the final one followed Mr. Cottage Days advice via Donna, which was this: M setting, f16, ISO 100, 1/100. I also used a tripod and the timer for the final two shots.

For the harvest moon — did I say Harvest Moon?! I have an AAB [arbitrary autumn block] on this blog for another seven days — I'm going back to the Canon and try these settings. That gives me until September 18 or 19 or somewhere in there to practice. You know what this means, Dears; you're going to have to watch me practice.

Second topic of the morning...Pinning Protocol on Pinterest. Gee. That would have made a great title all on its own. I do love alliteration. Anyway, this is what I see as a potential problem with Pinning on Pinterest — told ya!

Let me set this up: I see a  pin worthy item. I pin the item and make sure that the pin works and is properly described. Then I notice that the blogger has already pinned her own pin worthy item. (I have done this myself so that's not the question.) The question is this: When I see that the blogger has already pinned the item, should I delete the pin I have placed and then re-pin from the blogger's pin or should I just leave it be? Tell me what you think, if you haven't already. I have been having an ongoing discussion behind the scenes with a few friends.

Are there rules on Pinterest? Beyond *these*?

***

Next question: do you have an AAB on your blog, too? ☺ (I would just like to add that we woke to 48°F this morning.)

A happy weekend to you...

  1. I think Pinterest is wide open ... it's a bulletin board of images for one's personal use/inspiration. I never worry about my photos and only ask on my blog that people at least credit me with having taken the shot. That being said, once the photo is on the web, anyone could take it and use it for their own purposes. I've made a pact with myself not to watermark my photos because I find them distracting to the image, but I do understand why those photographers who are making their living selling their work would do that on-line.

    1. Susan, I have made a pact not to mess with watermarks either since the unscrupulous can remove them so easily. I've got enough time wasters in my life without adding another!

  2. Since being in Scotland where the summer high temps while there were 63 degrees, my mind is already saying "its' Autumn." Our nights are cooler too and the neighbors tree which is always a September color changer/fallen leaves, is changing already and losing leaves. The sumac along the road is already turning too!

I am trying to be good and not rush the seasons. However I did get some burlap out and changed the piano decor, but I won't show you that yet! :)

I love to watch photographers share their work and how they accomplished it! I love the last photo of the moon!

  3. I enjoy your pictures and the whole camera setting thing is Greek to me. I have a 'show-me' learning style and trying to read those directions is pointless. I need help. I would like to know which Canon you have, as I have a Canon Power Shot and lately I don't think my pics have been as good. Can you wear a camera out?
I have never gotten into Pinterest. I can't get around looking at pretty pictures all day. I used to be so productive, and now my blog takes so much of my time, and keeping up with news takes all the other...I find myself looking at other people's things instead of doing my own thing. I'm easily lead astray.
My daughter opened a Pin account for me awhile back. Recently she commented, "You aren't going to use this, are you." And I said, "You are correct".
I know nothing of Pinterest etiquette, but I enjoy blogging and have had the pleasure of meeting several bloggers. (You and I share one special.) I'll leave Pinterest to those of you who know about that stuff. :)

    1. Yes, cameras can get tired. I sent my Canon off for repair and it came back working as good as new. Now I just need to get some batteries and put it back to work!

  4. I have never been on Pin-whatever (lol). Lovely pics you have posted, love your new blog header. Have a great weekend. Blessings

  5. Your moon photos are exquisite!

As for Pinterest... I've only been to the site once or twice so I hope you'll find your answer from someone in the loop.

BTW, I love alliteration...I love how the words fall from my tongue.

  6. As an academic librarian I can assure you there is a protocol for citing anything, the purpose of citing being to enable someone to locate (whatever) from whence it originally sprang. If you are feeling mischievous, you can toddle over to any local college library and pose your question to the usually bored librarian.
Btw...recipes are to have citation if repeated in any format, and tweaking doesn't remove the obligation to credit the inspiration. Culinary plagerism is still plagerism.

That being said... I have encounter exceptionally conceited academics who designed their own citation methods. If they can do it, you can do it too.

And if you want to be able to cite anything (a leaf you found, a bit of lace, a particular cookie) I suggest using Dublin Core. Look it up!

    1. Dublin Core...Dublin, Ohio Core? Now that was fascinating, but I'm not sure exactly what we're discussing. I'm a former English teacher not a brain surgeon! LOL

I do not wish to cite a leaf I found nor a bit of lace nor a particular cookie. In what context would the average person use this vast knowledge?

    2. I lived in Dublin, Ohio for years!!!! Now I live close but next town over. Neat.

I always watermark my pics, those who haven't can find their entire BLOG stolen and used as someone else's. I would hate that.

I think if you pin and give credit that's enough, Vee. No one would ever deleted and re-do, there are too many millions of pins - long as it gives them credit I should think that proper enough. Of course that's just my OPINION, which could be wrong, of course.

  7. Great job Vee. I do not do Pinterest so don't know much about it. I saw a couple of things I had done posted on someone's Pinterest what that doesn't bother me any. I agree with Debbie. I spend too much time on the computer now-a-days and my computer is like me, just about worn out. So very slow. I will enjoy watching your projects take life. I too like that last shot of the moon.

  8. All three of your moon pics are far better than any of my blobs-in-the-sky, so I'm impressed.

I do not have an AAB block on my blog (you crack me up!), although I have amazed myself with my lack of complaining about summer this year. It has been one of the nicest summers (in many ways) in my recent memory, so there hasn't been a lot to complain about. I think last year, I started mentioning fall in June! Yikes!

About Pinterest...I wouldn't expect anyone to re-Pin directly from my own pin. I don't think it matters how the Pin arrives on the boards. If someone follows the Pin, it comes to my blog, so who cares how they get there? Maybe I'm missing something? (That wouldn't be a shocker.)

  9. Love the moon photos Vee. You're getting good!! I still can't take good moon shots and I know nothing of camera settings. I also should use my tripod. So. Pinterest. I'm there but not. I hardly ever look at it as I don't have the time with the blog too. I'm not sure of the rules of etiquette but feel as long as reference is made to the original photographer or saying it's from Pinterest it's good. Speaking of fall. It sure was cool last night. The same temperature here too and even cooler tonight. I'll soon have to cover plants from frost! The days are lovely though eh? Enjoy.

  10. Hi Vee!

Love the photos of the "blue moon". I really love the shot on the right - I just like seeing all the detail on the moon... :0) I need to play with the settings on my camera. I know that there are so many things it can do that I don't know how to do - night shots are one of the things that I want to learn about!

Pinterest!! I have so many things pinned, and I never look at hardly any of them! I may do the same thing I did with Facebook...discontinue it! There are some good ideas on Pinterest, great ideas in fact, but trying to organize them is just too much to think about for me. I can really just Google about anything that I have pinned - my thoughts on that!

It's been so hot here in the West, that Autumn is sounding better by the day! I know that when the snow flies, and I am forced to drive on slick, icy roads, I will wish for hot weather! The last few days, we have had cooler weather and a few rain showers. Along with all of that we have had thunder and lightning. That is scary, as the air is already thick with smoke from so many fires here in Idaho, and the lightning just adds to the problem!

Lots to think about today on your post! I love it!

    Hugs,
    Barb

I am no good at getting any kind of moon pics, so I can't give any advice there.
I do pin a bit and I don't know anyone who deletes as you mentioned. If a person is worried that someone may be using their photos without permission it is easy enough to keep track of what is being taken from your boards, and the contact the person who did this. I'm not sure if that helps or not....or even answers your question.

  13. Dublin Core for leaf or lace:

Supose you collect either item. Let's say you tend to gather them as you travel.
Dubin Core lets you identify the who, what, when, where of each item.

So you picked up a nice red maple leaf and preserve it by pressing it. You can document what type of maple leaf, what size (tall, wide, depth) and other physical descriptors like color, texture, the date you collected it, and where it was found.

You can add other notes: walking with grandson, saw rain drop on it etc.

Let's say you collect leaves as you drive across county, and you DC'd each leaf as you went along. You get home and you want to see which leaves you found in Wisconsin, or which leaves were maple or elm. Or which year or month a leaf was gathered.

Why would it matter? I could tell you hundreds of ways such info could be used for research or record keeping. DC is cool because you don't have to rely on an official agreed upon subject heading for cataloging what you are cataloging. A new thing like a recording of a spiders tapping sound can even be DC'd.

    ReplyDelete
  14. And by the by...you are not an average person Vee! You are above average, and yeah, even so most likely there would not be a time when cataloging in any form would be desired.
But if cataloging was needed (like a relative's estate) DC works great.

  15. I'm lost but I do like your moon shots.

  16. Well in my humble opinion it is totally OK to pin to your Pinterest boards even if a blogger has created their own pin. All pins lead back to the source anyhow, right? I'm smiling at your dialog with Jill! Great moon shots!

  17. So far I need a dictionary just for your comments on this subject! I'm afraid to even give an opinion....just because I'm blond doesn't mean I'm dumb, but ...I don't want to SOUND dumb either! hahaha! Back to the photos...they are fabulous! I love seeing the details of the moon. Pinterest...I'm still trying to figure it all out. Anything else you want to know? I have opinions on all kinds of things! lol Sweet hugs!

  18. Vee, If I was trying to take a moon shot, I would like the result to look like number three. So, I guess it depends on what your trying to get.
Now... after reading some of the advice your getting, I'm going to go and bang my head against the wall for awhile.

  19. OH goody since you were 48 degrees this morning , and we will be 58 tomorrow morning,I think I might just get busy with my fall decorations. ~smile~ But first apples next week.
I love your moon shots, and wanted to get some last night but was out rambling and didn't have my camera. I am now thinking of the harvest moon, too. I have not yet joined pinterest but have wanted to, trying to get back to blogging regularly is still a challenge for me. Enjoy your weekend.
    Hugs,
    Sue

  20. Your moon photos are wonderful, I did not even get a glimpse here, and I do love a blue moon. Only once was I lucky enough to be coming home later in the evening and everything was bathed in a soft blue glow, I will never forget it. I cannot believe it was 48 degrees by you this a.m. It is absolutely gorgeous here, temps about 80, no humidity, gorgeous. In the a.m. it is in the high 60's/low 70's. It is too soon for 48! xo

  21. The moon is beautiful...we have been enjoying it here also!

  22. I love the last moon shot you took. I like to see the detail in the moon.
My camera is just a point and shoot. I just see something I like and take a picture of it. No skill, just luck!!
I've not done much on Pinterest.

  23. RE: Pinterest... As a blogger, I don't care how pinners pin from my blog -- whether they initiate pins, or repin what I have pinned -- as long as they give credit where credit is due if and when they DO pin. That's my approach when I pin as well. Speaking for myself, when I pin my own item, my intent is just to get the ball rolling and to get the pin out there in Pinterest-land where people who don't read my blog can see it.

RE: AAB... what is it, please? =)

  24. Bravo!!!!! I see that Mr. Jim's advice was right on the money! (I guess I'll have to try a moon photo sometime, LOL.) You need to take a bow on that last shot, and I'll pass on the good news to Mr. Jim.

If you've already pinned something, I'd let it go. The source is happy to get the traffic no matter how it is pinned.

  25. I still can't do moon shots, I need to get a tripod since mine broke, love yours. I say just leave the pin you pinned, no big deal.

  26. Your moon shots are all good, Vee. I don't do much on Pinterest but have been pinned a few times. I just don't have the extra time to spend there right now. I started watermarking my photos when two different blogs were "stolen" and the complete content was used on different, unauthorized blogs. The report back from Blogger said that if you watermark your pictures this will not happen because no one wants to go through the effort of changing every photo on a blog. It also give you a control on the internet when your pictures are just "out there" that ties them back to your blog and might garner some readers.
Good luck with figuring it all out-

  27. You already know what I think about pinning.

Your moon shots are great. I thought about getting out my tripod the other night when the moon was full, but we were just headed out for a walk and I decided to forget about it. Now you've got me itching to try it, with Donna's husbands setting suggestions.

  29. Yes I think your moon shots are great. This is the blue moon, right? And what is AAB? I guess I don't see when bloggers pin from their own blog. I must go around in a fog sometimes!

    ReplyDelete
  30. What is an AAB?
I have yet to pin anything but I have signed up.
I have some blueish moon shots over at my place. I love yours.

  31. I'm all about fall and can't wait for it to get here!!! We're ate 58 right now. I think that if you keep your pin it would help with her site optimization - the more links pointing back to a site makes the search engine see the site as important and moves them up higher in the search engines.

    Happy Sunday!

  32. Hi Vee, Don't even get me started on the Pinterest issues!! Many pins do NOT get us back to the original source unless we really try to find it. But it looks like it is here to stay as there is no photography equivalent to the music industry to step in and make everyone behave. Anyway, I love your moon shots and I too am in AAB mode. I just returned from a great trip to Maine, I'm going back this weekend, and I'm not ready to give up on my summer posts yet! Probably no one will read them as all of blog land and pinworld seem to have switched over to the colors and decor of fall! Linda

    ReplyDelete
  33. It doesn't matter. I wouldn't go to the trouble of deleting your pin etc. That's a lot of work. All that matters is that somebody took the time to pin something. Pinterest is the #1 traffic source for most bloggers that track that sort of stuff :) So we're just happy people are pinning at all.
