Grocery Store Find

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may...

I was standing waiting to pay for my groceries when I noticed the bucket of flowers on the end of the belt. "Are those roses really only $2.99?!" I asked the teenage clerk.

"Yes, but don't get those. They're not as fresh. There is a beautiful bouquet of watermelon red roses on the other register."

She eagerly skipped off to grab the bouquet she was talking about. Now they were lovely, but not quite what I had in mind. I tried to explain, "Those roses are fresh and perfect and uniform and these are growing old and shabby and have layers of depth and color." She looked a bit crestfallen. Then I encouraged her to buy them for her mother. She said, "Oh, I've been thinking that I should."

Here are mine...

~Old and Shabby with Layers of Depth and Color~

And somewhere in town, I hope that a bouquet of watermelon red roses sits on a mother's table — a gift from her teenage daughter.

  11. Vee you are such a gift to us. What a great story. I agree the age makes a beauty that all cannot see, only the wise.

  12. Vee, I loved this post because it touches what I've been thinking about all week - how one comment from someone, even a stranger, can have a profound effect!

  13. What a thoughtful suggestion! I am not sure that I would have thought of it. Good for you for being open to an opportunity!

  14. She may not put it into perspective now, but I hope she remembers your conversation in years to come. I didn't like antique furniture, dishes, etc., when I was young. Now I appreciate the beauty of worn, shappy, and appreciate where they've been. The teenage clerk will wake up someday and see the beauty in them, too. - - Her mother may not be there, yet, either so just maybe it's a good thing you encouraged her to take the watermelon red ones as a gift to her mother.

  15. The ripple edges of the pink petals are visually exciting! Usually florist just pluck the dried up edged petals off like on the apricot colored rose.

  20. Good for you to defer to her mom, and encourage her to get the roses for her ... and isn't it funny how our tastes change, and old, tired roses seem more appealing than the fresh young ones?

  21. What a nice way to help the young clerk feel good and also surprise her mother.
Your shabby roses are so pretty, vee, and well worth $3 for the joy thye brought you!

  23. you are so right (as always)! perfect is
    not the most beautiful. depth,
    irregularity, and personality is what
counts . . . just as with people!

  24. Old and shabby with layers ... does it take someone with a few years of living (like me) to appreciate the layers?

    What a great conversation!

  25. I love your thoughts here and just couldn't agree more. Soo much more to beauty than perfection....the roses were beautiful. I love that the young girl was so eager to help too...but your reply back was perfect. Enjoy your day!

  40. I hope she bought them! I love a bouquet from the grocery store or place like that. It just brightens my day. I would love to have seen the watermelon colored ones, but I do happen to agree about the vintage look of the slightly aged ones.
