A Haven for Vee

Picnic

So yesterday it was about decorating. As you can see, I've done a titch more. I like the flag on the fence a lot and may have to leave it up all summer long.

Today, let's discuss a 4th of July picnic, which is exactly what we'll be enjoying tomorrow at the ocean, if all works according to plan.

These are the food items to go: ice (I actually just froze some flavored water in their original bottles), chips,  treats, fruit, wheat sandwich rolls, and sandwich filling. Since it's every family for themselves with sandwiches, I'm going to make egg salad for John and me. Anyone else is invited to have some, of course, but we like egg salad and it's easy enough to pack in a container and make our sandwiches fresh. I do not enjoy soggy rolls.

My son has already informed me that they'll be making ham and cheese as well as peanut butter. Apparently, only one of the grands will be eating a pbj sandwich as the other has graduated to ham and cheese. Progress!

I am planning to make Nutella Rice Krispee Treats, a Judy recipe from Mennonite Girls Can Cook. I know that my grands love Nutella so that'll be fun. Just yesterday, BettyR posted a Coconut Loaf recipe at MGCC and I am also making that to take along, if it cools off toward evening.

Must think of some extras...perhaps some dill pickles, but we're watching salt intake (I am anyway), so perhaps I'll switch to celery sticks.

Now what makes the perfect picnic for you? (You know, besides the obvious —leaving the ants home!)

  1. Now this sounds wonderful. Don't forget your camera, I missed a good picnic by leaving my memory card at home, even though I remembered the camera.

    Enjoy those grands..have a grand old time...Happy 4th!!!

  2. Sounds great!

My picnic would have to include some sandwiches for the kids as they are always hungry after running around.

    Happy Fourth of July!

Your seaside picnic sounds delightful! I especially like the Nutella treats! Yum! My brothers and sisters and their families will be joining us at our cottage in Maine for an old fashioned BBQ. I'm making pasta salad & three bean salad, they'll be garden salad and potato salad too!

  5. I have two perfect picnics. The first one is fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs and lemonade.

The second is a French baguette, some brie, grapes and a bottle of chilled pinot gris.

    Happy 4th Vee!

  10. That's a wonderful way to celebrate the 4th of July! Sandcastles, sandwiches, smiles and sunshine at the seashore. That's a perfect recipe for a fun filled day with the family! Happy 4th of July!

  11. A picnic at the shore! How perfect! Can I mention AGAIN how cold it is here (and WET) and how I'm envious of your warmth? No? Okay, I'll leave it for now.

Favorite picnic menu? On Canada Day we had roast chicken, potato salad, Greek salad, broccoli salad, chips, bread, fresh cherries, and cheesecake squares with fruit. It was delicious. It was also (cough, ahem) all from the deli, since it was a last minute idea with friends.
I do prefer salads over sandwiches for picnics, although an egg salad sandwich is a real treat!

Happy 4th of July to you, good neighbour!

  12. Oh, Nutella rice crispy treats....my kids would think they've gone to heaven! You're a wonderful grandma!

For a picnic...I'm not picky, I like tasty food, and easy to tote along. Lots of ice for my drink is a must, at all times. That's it.

    Have a wonderful time!

  13. It is much too hot to picnic outside here. At least for me. But, if I were...the perfect food for me would be fried chicken, potato salad, sliced tomatoes, cucumber salad and lots of iced tea. Watermelon and fruit or homemade ice cream would be a nice finish. Have fun at the ocean! Happy 4th!

  14. Loving your Red-White-Blue blog look!!! And your flag on the fence!

That Nutella Rice Krispee Treats sound like a yummy twist, on the old just plain Rice Krispies Treats.

We'll not be having a 4Th Of July picnic... Just the usual summer cook out kind of meal.

"Pop" will probably make Potato Salad. I'll make Red-White-and-Blue Shortcake, with strawberries, blue berries, and whipped cream, plus ice cream for the kids.

And lots of chips. Baked ones are yummy. Probably hot dogs and hamburgers will appear.

    Beer... Soda...

HAPPY FULL THUNDER MOON, July 3rd.!!!

  15. Oh how I love a picnic. It's been years since I've packed a picnic lunch. I guess egg salad, ham and cheese and peanut butter and jam would be in my basket along with potato chips, iced tea in a huge thermos, chocolate chip cookies and don't forget the napkins and a trash bag. Have a fun time celebrating the Fourth of July at the coast. Hugs, Pam

  16. Sounds like a wonderful picnic! I was on here earlier and got sidetracked with the recipes you shared. I've got to make those!

Waldorf Salad was always a family favorite when I was growing up. Now I make a modified version with apples, celery, walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette salad dressing. I like it, but can't say that DH will even taste it!

  17. Forgot to say that it's such a special treat that you take the time to frame these pictures. Sure makes a beautiful touch!

  18. Sounds like you've made some great choices for your picnic. Ya gotta think ahead when you have to tote everything a distance from home and your kitchen. Dear is smoking a brisket for bbq brisket sandwiches. I'm making coleslaw and barbecued beans with jalapenos thrown in. My two girlfriends are bringing dishes to share. My sister is going to make a trifle with star shaped angel food cake pieces. I might try those rice krispy treat sparklers I saw on Pinterest... Have a great celebration!!

  19. Have a wonderful fun filled July 4th celebration, Vee. Like you I don't like a soggy sandwich. Thanks for the links, I will visit. egg salad a favorite at our house, since the hens give lots of eggs.
Enjoyed your previous posts, I am sad to say that due to all of the renovations in progress both inside and outside, not much decorating around here, so for now I will enjoy yours, I must go and visit PicMonkey, I need help with my photos.
    Enjoy your day.
    Hugs,
    Sue

  21. Sounds like a lovely picnic! Your day sounds perfect! I am all about ham and cheese sandwiches on a picnic.

I am totally jealous of the Nutella rice crispy treats... I miss Nutella. I miss Rice Crispy treats.

I may have to give in and have something sweet tomorrow. Just a bite of course. =)

  23. Sounds like a wonderful picnic to me. I have bought low sodium pickles and they were very good. Not sure if you get the brand in Maine, it is B and G. Also Mt. Olivet. Have fun! xo

  24. Any hamper that my hubby packs!
Favorite picnic was heritage tomatoes with fresh mozzerella cheese, slashed with balsamic vinegar on crusty sour dough bread...consumed at sunset by the Golden Gate Bridge.

  25. Your picnic menu sounds great to me. I've been wanting to try that coconut loaf since she posted that recipe. The Rice Krispy treats sound good too, but I've never tried Nutella.
We are cooking sweet corn, ribs, and potatoes on the grill.

  27. I've been thinking about a picnic. Haven't gone on one for years.
Deviled eggs, fresh fruit salad, fried chicken, cake, cookies, cold water with lemon in it, or sun tea.
    I am fantasizing.

  28. Your picnic at the ocean sounds delightful whatever the menu! I will be doing a very non-traditional thing. I am skipping out on our family reunion this year. I have only missed one other (due to a sick child) in the 34 years that we have been married, but the intense heat has scared me off for tomorrow. Instead, the girls and I are going to Barnes and Noble where we will browse and read and peruse magazines and drink Frappuccinos...and be cool! (I am a wimp.)

    Have a lovely picnic, Vee!

  31. Your picnic at the shore sounds like a fun way to spend the 4th of July, Vee! There is a threat of thunderstorms here tomorrow so I might skip going to the beach as I planned. I might stay home and barbecue. I always made brownies to bring on a picnic..I left them in the pan and cut them on site, and I always made a bowl of fruit salad. Otherwise is was fried chicken potato and macaroni salad, etc.

  32. It sounds like you have your picnic basket all but packed! Let me know how the nutella krispee treats went over.

My idea of a perfect picnic basket for the two of us is somewhat different than when the whole gang is coming on the picnic! We spent the weekend camping with everyone...and found we needed quite a varied menu to cater to all! But they all love cooking food on a stick...over the fire.

Happy 4th of July...and enjoy the picnic!
