My Neighbor's Roses
My Neighbor's Roses
The roses upon my neighbor's vine
Are owned by him, but they are also mine;
His was the cost, and his the labor, too,
But mine as well as his the joy, their loveliness to view.
They bloom for me, and are for me as fair
As for the man who gives them all his care.
Thus I am rich, because a good man grew
A rose-clad vine for all his neighbors' view.
I know from this that others plant for me,
And what they own, my joy may also be;
So why be selfish, when so much that's fine
Is grown for you, upon your neighbor's vine?
~Abraham Gruber
This little poem comes from this book discovered by John at the local flea market for a pittance. The book is loaded with wisdom and I've enjoyed every page.
I find My Neighbor's Roses so meaningful because it very nearly perfectly explains how I feel about so many blogs...each one a life shared. I don't own the beautiful homes nor the rooms that fill them; no, nor the treasures that fill the rooms, but they are still somehow mine because they have been shared. Makes me feel like sharing, too.
Can you believe that another week has passed and that the weekend is here? Enjoy this day and your weekend...

Vee, that is beautiful! Wouldn't that make a lovely title for a blog... My Neighbor's Roses? I get images of people who love others, share in each other's successes and isn't afraid to acknowledge the wisdom of another person!
ReplyDeleteI know just what you mean, Vee. You said it perfectly. Have a lovely wekend. I am off to see the boy safely back at uni once again.
ReplyDeleteVee,
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful sentiment and I love the way you expressed it! I think yours is the one the best in my bouquet!
I have a different edition of Tony's Scrapbook! I am not sure I am remembering right but I think he was a radio announcer of some sort and the writings in his books were things he shared on air. I'll have to check to see that I telling this correctly but if memory serves this is right.
The volume I have was well loved and little poems, clippings, and writing are found pasted or scrawled across the pages along with the original print.
I hope you enjoy a cozy day!
Thoughtful post, Vee. I feel the same way about the lovely places I have visited in blogland, yours being one.
ReplyDeleteThis is the only time of the year I hope passes quickly and warmer weather returns.
Good morning friend. Well spoken. What a treasure - John should accompany you on all your forays into the sales! Beautiful poem, and you have a beautiful blog. I look forward to seeing what nugget you have for us every morning - take care....
ReplyDeleteA sweet poem, with more than one meaning. It's true for around our own little plot.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's so true of visiting blogs! Only you were the one who thought of it, first. Thank you for saying it.
I'm sure so many of us, are saying; "Yes! Exactly how I feel!" in response to your words.
Visiting blogs with which I resonate, gives me such joy and peace and smiles, and feeds my need to see "loveliness," etc.

Before I finished reading the poem...I too was reminded of how much the blogs of others have encouraged me...just like the lovely flowers in the gradens of my neighbours! Thanks for sharing, Vee.
ReplyDeleteLovely thoughts expressed so beautifully. V.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely poem! Thanks for sharing with us!
ReplyDeleteThank you for asking... I'd be pleased to have my blog added to your blog-roll. I intend for it to stay a place of warmth and calm and {I hope} some prettiness, for any who may happen by 'the Attic.'

ReplyDeleteHi Vie,
ReplyDeleteIt is late afternoon,I picked up my computer to put a post on and I happened to glance at my blog list to see who had recently posted and I saw yours on roses and since I love roses I decided to read rather than write.
You have one of the most enjoyable blogs, not to mention sincere, thank you so much for all of the roses that you give to us all on a regular basis.
Blessings,
Sue
I can't wait until spring!
ReplyDelete*deep sniff of those beautiful roses*
Thankful for your blog today!♥
That's the way I feel about my neighbor's garden.
ReplyDeleteThey do all the work but we share a fence (and we are actually almost behind their house the way the three houses at the end of the lane are situated).
He is a professor and they are in California for the next six months. I will miss their Spring gardening!
What a beautiful poem and roses!
ReplyDeleteSo nice to see roses when it is 9 degrees! Thank you! Are you on south shore Mass.?
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting book to find! I love to collect poems, inspirational prayers, quotes, etc, in notebooks, so I know I'd love browsing through "Tony's" collection too.
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel about blogs and I feel the same way. I often marvel how I now know people from around the world and how much we share together. Blogging has made my life fuller. So glad to be your blog friend, Vee!

And that beautiful poem is precisely how I feel about your lovely blog, sweet Vee. I am thankful I can peer across the fence (I mean computer screen) and view your beautiful roses (I mean stories and pictures!)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,

My neighbor's roses, what a lovely poem and your photo is stunning. I love finding old poems, it seems God was so woven in the fabric of years past. That is such a perfect comparison too. Blogging welcomes you into the hearts and homes of all of our neighbors. What a lovely thought. Thank you for that Vee.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Karen
What a beautiful poem Vee and your rose picture reminds me we're only a hop and jump away from spring :)
ReplyDeleteA wonderful weekend & blessed Sonday,
Kathi :)
Vee! You've done it! The new background suits your "haven" well. Just lovely! I love the sentiment of the poem. There's a comradery in blogging I had no idea existed. The thoughts and images planted by dear "neighbors" in blogland have changed me. I'm thankful for the sweetness it has brought me. ~Kathy
