A Haven for Vee

What's Doing?

Let's see what's blooming or about to green out around here. The days have cooled back to normal spring temperatures, whatever that means, so the forsythia, daffodils, etc., are feeling happier again. I am happier as well since a rush into heat with little foliage doesn't work for me.

The maple leaves are getting ready... Lovely red buds just now against the clear blue sky. We have a lot of conifers in our corner, but I do love the deciduous trees.

The forsythia is in full swing. We trimmed it all back last year and took some cuttings to John's place. Unfortunately, those cuttings didn't take so I must do some research to learn where we went wrong.

The rhubarb is up and, in lieu of chicken scat, I am spreading coffee grounds. I have no idea if it will be good enough. Probably not. I'll report back. All I know is that if I were a plant, I'd prefer coffee over chicken poo.

Oh, look at that! My yellow roses are up!

Now that's the euphemistic way of describing what happened to this poor saucer. It was broken while I cleared my kitchen of clutter last Saturday. I decided that I would use it in some way rather than toss it out hence its being tucked into the dirt.

Do come back tomorrow, if you're interested, to see what I did with my 1950s, very dated kitchen with only decluttering...no paint and nothing new. This is the best way to get a post up for Wednesday by making an appointment in advance. Tricky, eh? Do you ever do that?

  1. I have done that. Good for you!

I am so very hungry for strawberry rhubarb pie....seeing your rhubarb gives me hope. It is coming!

    Have a great day!

  2. I would prefer coffee, too. :)

Manuela has dishes like that in her garden (The Pleasure of Homemaking). I'd love to do something like that but whimsy only goes so far with hubby.

As it is, I have a plate rack nailed on our deck where I keep a couple of pretty plates. He just shakes his head...

  3. Hahaha, love the buried dishes! I've seen that before and it is a great idea! Can't wait to see your decluttering makeover. The pressure is on now for you to deliver!!! (yes, I do that too - make a commitment to spur me into action)

  4. Yikes!!! Rhubarb likes to be fed with chicken pooooooooooo?

'Uncle A.' says that Rhubarb does like manure.

    Hmmm...

    Now what?!?!?

Guess we need some packaged "Moo Doo."

    (le sigh)

  5. I just bought a rhubarb plant. I was under the impression that they wouldn't do well here, but since they had several for sale at Lowe's, I am hoping they are suited for our area. My mouth is watering for some strawberry-rhubarb pie or rhubarb crunch. You cracked me up with your coffee vs. chicken poo.
Love what you've done with the broken saucer. I have seen that done as a border and also in a pot. Very cute.
Your blue sky is gorgeous and so is your forsythia.
I'll be back to see your kitchen transformation.
    Enjoy your day.

  6. Well, we have duck doo here, plus a shrinking horse doo mountain, compliments of the previous owner. I wish I knew how coffee is beneficial. I think, but not certain, if it has nitrates and some plants just love that.

I planted some lettuce today, so no green there, but we have budding trees of an unknown variety, the lilac bush is showing green. I tell ya, if those flowers weren't so pretty, I'd hack that thing down. The smell...the smell...

I love the idea of how you are using your broken plate. I don't have a lot fancy like that, but for a few of my grandparent's wedding dishes and instead of crying over it if one breaks, I will "plant" them in my garden. :)

I hope you have a blessed day.

  7. I have been discarding my coffee grounds around a rhododendron bush for a few years and it seems to have flourished! Perhaps the grounds make the soil more acidic which some bushes like?

I like the yellow rose plates in the soil. I remember seeing a blog post by someone who had her whole garden rimmed in colorful plates --it was so charming! When I break a dish I save it to use to cover drainage holes in my clay flower pots.

I'm looking forward to seeing your de-cluttered kitchen! Maybe it will inspire me to do the same?

  8. There's always a use for a broken plate. I just glued a broken plate back together...one of my favorites...and I now use it under the vase in my front entry.

I would prefer coffee myself...but I'm not so sure about the rhubarab. We have cleaned up several rhubarb pies here already...but I cheated and bought the rhubarb at the farm market. Mine needs a little more growth before harvest.

  9. The world over us gardeners are doing stuff in our gardens.
I like your new roses! At least they will not need pruning!

  10. Rhubarb means spring is officially here in my calender. And yesterday I made some rhubarb cake, but I cheated and used some from the freezer from last year, since no rhubarb plant yet adorns our new yard.

    Looking forward to tomorrow.

  11. Your blooming and budding looks wonderful. I love that you took that sweet yellow rose saucer and made it new again, by placing it in your garden...

  18. ha ha! what lovely yellow roses
    you are growing!

    and yes, coffee grounds sounds
    much nicer than the alternative.

we had a lovely time in paris with
our girls and are now recovering
    from jet lag.

  19. Now I have the chicken poo for you....more than I can handle! This spring has been absolutely gorgeous. The wetter than normal winter really made a difference here. Your yellow-bells are beautiful. I love to see them blooming in yards, the branches flowing like a fountain. And the roses.... simply magnificent!

I can't wait to see your kitchen "makeover"!

Oh, I love your Anne of Green Gables music!

  20. I LOVE rhubarb, but it is hard to find around these parts. Unfortunately, rhubarb doesn't grown well here in the South - it gets too hot here! My mother always told me that my great-grandmother always made strawberry-rhubarb sauce that was delicious. Sounds good to me!

  21. I have done the broken plates around an edge of a flower bed. Have also glued broken plates onto concrete path stones. You have some beautiful pictures there.

I can't wait to see your kitchen, my character of a daughter loves all that vintage/retro stuff.
    Lovley pics of your place:)
