A Haven for Vee

Stuff and Things

Apparently, this is going to be a rainy week. We had rain Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, a delightful reprieve Wednesday, and today and tomorrow will be rainy. It's all good, though, because we've been much in need of comfort and what's more comforting than cooking and enjoying quiet reading time when it's chilly and wet outside?
You may remember the *Winter Squash Soup* recipe that I provided a few posts ago. I made it Tuesday and we all enjoyed it. Mother did suggest that the spices be cut back because she enjoys squash so well that she would've been happier to have really tasted the squash. Surprisingly, even I liked it. You know how I hate vegetables!

We are still scrambling. We're off visiting nursing homes as you read this. Still we have been granted a reprieve for a few days. Phew! I do hope that somehow they'll be able to keep Nan. I want her to stay where she's happy and where the staff has worked out most of the issues and they know her so well.

In the evenings, my mother and I work on getting her (my mother's) new home away from home together. A lot of work ahead, but it'll be nice once everything is settled.

So we're busy and I find myself missing you. I run through and usually stay just long enough to read. I'll be back... this is not a warning. (Mother thinks I've been quite hard on some of these nursing homes. Really? Where does she get these ideas?)

(Thank you for all the nice comments on yesterday's post. It was a lot of fun for me and my mom. Yes, one does use flour. Yes, we did do a hot water bath. Wow! Do all of you really peel toward yourselves? I should do a survey...)

HaVe A gReaT ThURsdAy!

  1. Vee,

I am so thankful for the bit of extra time you have been given. Still hoping and praying that something works out and she won't have to move after all.

I want to thank you for all of the friends you send to my candle sight from your side bar. I see in my Feedjit where they come from and many are from you....Thanks!!!!

  2. I'm relieved you all are more optimistic about a possible move to another nursing home. I hope she can stay where she is to.

Thank you for taking the time to update us and know our prayers are with you all.

Your winter squash soup is now in my recipe folder to try.

  3. Squash Soup! Yummmm! 'Uncle A.' made some a while ago. And we "gorged" ourselves on it. ,-)

This post, on your whole blog page, looks like a magazine spread. Lovely! Autumnal! Warm! Cozy! All those good things, of the Season. :-)

Typically, your Mom thinks you are too hard on some of those facilities. Hehhhhhhhhhh... Tell her to hush up, from me. I can say that 'cause I'm 73, and probably older than she is. *Youngin'*! -giggles-

The rain is staying? Booo-hissss... You are the bearer of bad weather tidings to me, this time. Usually, it's our Daughter. In Winter, we don't even want to hear from here, just down the street is she. 'Cause she always knows when horrrrrrible storms are coming! I think she has a direct line to the Weather Bureau or something. -giggles-

Luck with the reprieve and with your wishes... Btw, is there any way to check on the technicalities and legality of them moving her? A family friend who is a lawyer or some such????

  5. I hope you find the perfect place for Nan....I will continue to say prayers.

I peal towards myself when I am pealing with a knife - with a pealer - I peal away...

  7. So glad to know that some of the pressure has been taken off. It's hard to make a decision on something so important with so little time. Praying God will provide the right answer...and that Nan will be allowed to stay where she is, if that's what's best for her.

  8. I'll need to write down your soup recipe. Always looking for something new and we love squash around here.

I can relate to your comment about your mom being worried you are too hard on the nursing homes. While my mom was in the hospital, just before being moved to the nursing home, I had a confrontation with her doctor...words and comments he said that were NOT needed at the time. I just let him know my opinion and my dad said...Your going to get your mother kicked out of here! Well, that of course didn't happen. But again, we are their voice in these situations. And I know they are happy for it! My thoughts are always with you in this time you are going thru! Have a productive day!

  9. For the survey...peel away, not toward myself.

So glad you have been given a wee bit more time....with your Nan. Will pray that the outcome is the best for all.

  10. You sound a lot happier today.
I'm one of the ones who peels toward myself. I get hollered at all the time for it too!!

  11. I do wish you would share the rain with us down below you. It is still unseasonably hot and if it hits 90/32.2 tomorrow, it will be the first time in history that SLC has ever been that hot in October.

  12. I sure like your spunk Vee. I thought to myself the other day after another unsettling few comments. ..boy ..I wonder what Vee would say in response.
All the best today in your search.

  13. Rain and puttering around the house seem to go together well.
I hope the search for a home for your sweet Nan goes well.

  14. We are also having a few days of rain. I love butternut squash soup and it is perfect for thsi weather.

I peel away from my body but my older brother who was trained a chef in the ARMY (and probably did a lot of potato peeling) told me the proper way is towards the body, as that is how the blade turns to cut best.

Glad your Nan has a reprieve! The problem with most nursing homes is that the caregivers you see are not professional nurses but poorly paid health aides. It is not a career but a job. Many can be very dedicated, however, and that makes the difference.

  15. Vee, I hope things work out the very best for you and your Nan. It's so much to have on your plate. I will continue to say a little prayer for you. Hopefully you will find exactly the place that can meet your Nan's needs and your's as well. ;)

The winter squash soup sounds absolutely divine. Creamy soups are the best on cool, rainy days. Autumn is trying to make an appearance here, at last. It was 95 last Thursday and today it's 78. It guess fall will do as summer did and suddenly appear!

  20. Vee:

Having been until recently all through the stages of nursing homes, I pray you find what is best for her and all of you.

I so loved the butternut soup recipe, and LOVED mom & the cucumbers. It looks like something out of a Jan Karon or Janette Oke book!! :)
