The Heavens Declare

Did you see the asteroid last night? My daughter called at 6:15 telling me that it was clearly visible to the right of the moon and that by 6:28 it would be at its closest point. That sent me scurrying for the tripod, camera, and a housecoat.

So there I was after dark on the front lawn snapping pictures when a group of teens walked by. (Some of the very same teens who have been on the wrong side of the law lately.) They looked at me kind of funny (I do not blame them for this. It's not every day that you see an old lady on her front lawn wearing a red housecoat taking pictures of the sky.) I said, "Some asteroid, eh?"

They started looking around...at least they were looking up...and I pointed them to the bright, bright "star" to the right of the moon.

"Oh wow!" they said and kept on walking down the street looking up at the sky. It was cute.

Last Night's Moon

Last Night's Hexagon Asteroid? Jupiter!

I'm not sure about this asteroid. I thought they were just chunks of rock, not six-sided golf balls dropping by. I may actually have to do some research: here, here, and here.

Jupiter! That daughter of mine! And I am nearly hysterical thinking of standing out there on my front lawn for lame old Jupiter. Shoot. I have learned my lesson, thanks Christine!

More on yesterday's topic another day. There were nearly as many behind-the-scenes comments that I'd like to discuss (protecting everyone's identity, of course) and perhaps in the new year. We'll leave pretty Blogland to enjoy the holidays.

  1. It was cloudy and rainy here... we did not get to see it. Thanks for sharing your pictures with those of us who could not see it.

  3. WOWSERS!!!!!! You are just getting too excellent, with your photography. :-)

Mmmmmmmmm, WHICH asteroid was that? Meaning, I've read about one on Tues., and on Thurs. Soooooooo, were there 2 big 'uns?

Yeah, who cares? As long as they didn't hit us. Or the moon.

  4. Hi Vee,

Just imagine, 10 years in the future, a young astronomer is remembering and thanking the "old lady" in the red housecoat, standing in her dark front yard who pointed out an asteroid to him. :)

I forgot about it. It was a bright blue sky here, so I'm not sure I would have been able to see it anyway. I do get up in the middle of the night to watch meteor showers, though.

  5. I saw it and thought it was Jupiter. Got out my Google Skyscaper and that is what it showed me.

  6. How great that you were able to see it and thought to take pictures to share with us. I'm like so many others, I didn't get to see it. Your pictures are a nice surprise. Thank you!

I hope your greeting to the boys will have them "looking up" more often.

  8. ha ha! The best part. ..is that those kids would have now been telling everyone they know that they saw the asteroid. So fun! Thanks for sharing this Vee. It just shows what a quality blogger you are!

  9. Well, it might not have been an asteroid, but it sure is a good picture of Jupiter.

  10. That is a hoot!

I thought the asteroid was the day before yesterday?

Anyway, I was very concerned when NASA said they were 100% sure it wouldn't hit earth....seems they aren't always that correct. LOL

  11. Day late and a dollar short here! I'm chuckling about those teens...
That moon must have been bright because Dear opened the bathroom window at 3 am wondering why it was so bright!

  13. I didn't see the asteroid.
I always thought the bright star near the moon was Venus.
    Great shot of the moon!!!

  15. Great moon shots Vee! I heard it wouldn't be too visible here and it was sort of cloudy in the evening so the moon was covered too. Looks like rain for Remembrance Day tomorrow. Hugs, Pamela

  19. It was so cloudy and gloomy here I missed the whole thing. I would loved to have seen the full moon and the asteroid.

  20. I was out taking photos of the moon and Jupiter too - it was lovely and clear here for once. I happened to see on Facebook: "Wow - check out the moon and Jupiter!" so THAT is how I knew!! Nothing to do with superior knowledge !

  21. Vee
At least you were able to get a good picture of whatever it was.
You should've had those teens take a pic of you in your red housecoat for all of us! But then you might not have gotten your camera back!

  22. Hahaha, at least you made the kids look up in the sky!

  23. Well, yesterday was the day for our annual mother/daughter Christmas shopping trip (three generations)...so I was unaware of an asteroid (or Jupiter, as it turned out).
I suppose we would have noticed if an asteroid had fallen in our vicinity, but not unless it made quite a racket! (These shopping trips can be intense.)
    Regardless, your picture was intriguing.
Maybe tonight will be less adventurous. :-D

  25. Just catching up this morning Vee!
Here is my take... You are just to much fun, and bring so much joy to all who visit here. Leah said it so well. You are Priceless!

Commenting on your voting results post, We had such a low voter turnout, no wonder the liberals are getting what they want! Ooops, I better be careful, I will jump on my soap, box, especially on what is happening with the Republican candidates!
    Enjoy your day.
    Hugs,
    Sue
