Gathering Life

Not only the days, but life itself lengthens in summer. I would spread abroad my arms and gather more of it to me, could I do so.
~ Richard Jefferies

Monday morning began with breakfast out followed by an hour of bike riding in the cemetery then an idea for a picnic at a local animal farm. (More on that tomorrow.) It wasn't the most comfortable picnic hence Sam's car seat. John and I were wishing we had a portable car seat in no time.

We love the ability to be able to drop everything and gather in such summer moments.  I wish the same for you...

  1. Lawn chairs, Vee. Always keep lawn chairs in the car. haha! I'd be needin' a car seat, too! One of my hips doesn't work so great anymore...

But what a fun time with your young man!

  2. These are the beautiful days...we do need to soak them in.

Taking moments, being spontaneous...it's harder and harder for me to do but it's needed with young kids still in the house.

  3. It is so hard to take those moments. Summer passes by so quickly and then it's over. This heat though has made it seem a bit longer. Nice picture of the guys in your life. He looks totally comfortable in that car seat!

  4. Beautiful times. I'm so happy that you had this opportunity. That looks like a fun picnic and I love that the car seat came out.

  5. The heat and drought have taken a lot of our pleasure out of the summer. Everything in my yard is getting crunchy! Oh, how lovely rain is!
You actually sat on the ground? You are in much better shape than me. This is the first summer in a long time we haven't had lawn chairs in the trunk.
I'm not into car seats yet.

  6. Oh!! You just described a dream morning for me. I know it sounds morbid, but I love to venture into old cemeteries and feel the stories unfold.

    It's so steeeenkin' hot here.

  7. We have folding chairs that collapse to almost nothing that we keep in our car for the spur of the moment picnics. We got them at Lowe's for about $12 each.

    Love this picture!

  8. You are taking advantage of the lovely days of summer and your picnic photo is a classic - right down to the picnic basket. i love the fact that you've captured the conversation in the photo.

  13. I love a picnic...and you know Gary and I have not done so all summer. I think I will plan a little get away and a picnic. Summer fun for sure.

  14. How wonderful that you and John see those moments and are willing to take advantage of them. I think we often have those moments in life but either don't see them or choose not to make the time to enjoy them. How wonderful that you took the time for each other and for Sam. He'll remember these moments someday and want to re-create them for special ones in his life. I know you'll look back and laugh about your backaches. Won't you?!!

  15. I love a picnic and the photo shows that you had a wonderful time.

Life is so very short, we need to make the most of every minute.

  18. Like jewels in the memory bank...
Yes it has been a very warm summer for a lot of us, and much too rainy for the rest. Bernie Ponted out that snow could happen in as little as six weeks. Doesn't seem possible but it has happened before.

  20. What a great picture and memory you've made. I think the quilt and vintage picnic basket look so lovely and elegant - no chairs needed (at least for the picture but I know what you mean about comfort). Love summer!

  23. That photo of John and your grandson is precious. I would need a seat too, if I went on a picnic. It is a blessing to reap the reward of retired life. I feel very blessed.
    Enjoy every moment. xo

  27. I love the quote..the picture is totally priceless...and this is how I felt yesterday as Benjamin and I road our bikes to the pool...summer is really too short, but I am grabbing all I can get...now off to go grab more

  28. I just adore that about you- truly you have the very best attitude!

You are such a good person, Vee, and I feel so inspired from your wonderful blog.

  29. I could relate to Richard Jefferies' quote better if I could substitute the word "autumn" for "summer." :D

Okay, okay...I am indeed trying to grab those summer moments. And your picnic looks glorious! Such memory-making moments...

  30. Oh yes, that is great to be able to change plans in an instant. Keep life fun and interesting.

Just tried sending you an email but I don't think my message got sent with it.
Thanks for the link and Sam's comments did make me laugh. He could have been talking about us.

  31. Looks like a great day. I would have to say next time put a few lawn chairs in your car! I used to always keep one in my car when my son was in little league. Hope you're having a nice day!

  32. I don't think I'll ever get use to you mentioning riding bikes in the cemetery. Cemeteries are sometimes fascinating to find very old graves, but riding bikes through them, just can't grasp the visual, still I laugh. Love the picture posted, such a tender Kodak Moment! It's those special moments that make great memories.

  33. I love spur of the moment surprises like that. We don't do them enough, or at all, these days. Yes, it's good to keep chairs in the trunk, just in case. It's too hard on the old legs to sit on the ground (my old legs!!). ;)

  34. Well, I was going to suggest keeping lawn chairs in the trunk, but it looks like a few people already beat me to it! Looks like you had a fun day, even without the chairs. It's hard to believe the days are already getting shorter. Make the most of every one!

  35. Sounds and looks wonderful. Our car actually came with a little built in table under the spare tire - it comes in handy but you're right sitting on the ground can be painful - even more so trying to get up:)

  36. We had a spur of the moment picnic at the lake when our granddaughter was staying with us last month. It was a nice time and we even found a picnic table right by the water.
We often take chairs on our outings as sitting at a picnic table is hard on the back.
Wishing you sunny days in August Vee.
