A Haven for Vee

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

This arrived in a forward yesterday and perfectly expresses what's on so many of our minds — the rising cost of fuel. While filling the gas tank of my car a day or so ago, I saw numbers never before associated with the process...the gauge finally stopped at $40.69. Thank goodness! The poor guy beside me was filling his SUV and he was literally yelling "STOP" as his meter rose ever higher. I'm not sure if he has a sense of humor or whether he really just wanted it to all be over. One of these days, if things continue in this vein, there'll be a cartoon with people keeled over at the pump. I swear, I felt lightheaded there for a minute myself and it wasn't the fumes.

Have a great Wednesday!

  1. The price of fuel is insane isn't it? To fill up half of the tank of our teeny tiny car yesterday is cost a fortune! Thank goodness we rarely use the car but £1.18 ($2.37)per litre nearly made me choke to death.
Yesterday we had blockades in London and some other places in protest at the fuel prices.

  2. It certainly is disturbing with fuel going up everytime I go to the pump.I've tried to imagine what will happen if it continues to go up. I try to cut back, but I don't know what else to do, but pray.

  3. I've certainly curtailed unnecessary driving. The farmer is going to need to consider staying up at the old farmhouse at the herb farm because the drive is 45 miles ONE WAY.

  4. It is shocking. I remember the gas crisis in the '70s when the price rose dramatically but there was also a shortage at the pumps. We used to sit in long lines and each time we got to move up, my husband would get out and push the car up in the line so we didn't waste gas starting and stopping the engine.

  5. Vee, I have one of those obscenely huge SUV's and the last time I filled it up the cost was $81!! I about fainted! The only reason I still drive that monster is because it's paid for! The rising cost of fuel is on our minds constantly since Eric travels for a living. Looks like he may be looking for a new line of work! YIKES!

  6. And I remember filling up the car for less than five dollars once upon a time! On the holiday weekend we ran out of tractor fuel on the farm, and since the work must go on...they drove the tractor a few miles to a service station to fill-up. $458.96 later, the tractor could go back to work! That is painful.

  7. The days of people keeling over at the pump are almost here, I'm convinced of it!!
I never believed that I would see prices like we are paying now.
    Ouch!!!

  8. Imagine having 2 college kids still at home on your payroll and having part-time jobs, too, but we're paying out the kazoo for gas around our house!!! My husband has to travel once a week, and it's crazy! We're trying to conserve and carpool when we can, but it's almost next to impossible sometimes! Can't make as many trips back and forth to the farm either!!!!! Gripe Gripe Gripe - Vickie :)

  9. Love the picture! You are so funny! Seriously, I am worried about the rising prices and the housing slum as it directly affects my husbands job. The Lord will provide, after all, he did give me feet! Happy Wednesday!

  10. I filled my SUV this morning. $67.00!!! And the cost of living is rising along with the cost of gas! Unfortunately, my pay isn't!

I make every trip count now! No more running to the store for one little item.

  13. I know the feeling Vee...We have really cut back on just popping in the car and going at random. We try to do all our errands on one outing. I have no idea how people are still driving these large SUVs...guess we'll just have to go-with-the-flow....

  14. I love that cartoon. It costs nearly £65 to fill my car here now. That is $130. I am spending about £160 a month just to get to and from work. ($320) It is frightening. And so is the rising cost of everything else. Thank heavens for homegrown food.

  15. I know it is horrible. We have two teens too and it is so hard on them since they don't make much money to begin with.

  16. You're not kidding! These gas prices are out of control. The oil companies keep saying some hogwash about "supply and demand" being the reason gas prices are so high, but I heard on the news yesterday that American's drove something like 11 billion miles LESS this past March than ever before. Sounds to me like the demand is going down so why are the prices still so high????

  17. My husband said something today I never expected to hear when pumping gas in the car... "Don't let it go over $60.00". Sheesh!

  18. I can't believe how the prices are soaring...I may have to start visiting my Doctors by Crystal Ball...I was tagged earlier in the week with the Six Random Things tag and I in turn am tagging you. The rules are posted ready to cut and paste at my place...hope you'll play along!

  21. I pulled up to the pump just as a lady pulled in to the one in front of me. We started nozzles at about the same time... she was muttering and I knew I would be as well because I was running on fumes by the time I gassed up. When only a tick of a second had passed she sang out... $14.00 !! I countered with $21.00 in the next breath.... then we got to the $30s..the $40s....and were wailing when we both went over $80... I topped off at $98 !!! Hers was $96...... then she said...off we go driving on fumes of gold. Wonder how long much it will cost when next we full up. I said I didn't know...but could she bring coffee next time if I brought muffins?...cuz it took a darn long time to fill up. We left laughing...what else can we do about it? Laugh or go crazy... and stay home more....

  22. Ha! Your fuel gauge is funny yet alarming isn't it? "They" (the news media) think it will be $6 per gallon by next summer...race car driving anyone? LOL!

  23. Our petrol is equivalent to $10 a gallon at present.
