Painting the Table Top White

I'm so glad that when I was visiting The Inspired Room earlier this week, Melissa mentioned that she had painted her dining room table white. She further said that, though it was done imperfectly, it was done. That's my story. If anything is accomplished around here, it is imperfectly. This table was begun the week my mother left us. I have not wanted to return to the task. Melissa's words gave me the permission to get going again. When I asked John what he thought about the table project, he said, "It's time for it to be done." Exactly.

Penny's redoing her dining room table as well. You can follow her project at The Comforts of Home. Penny paints her table whenever she tires of it. I do not have that much ambition, though I find it equally inspiring to know that anything we don't enjoy can have a new life.

Check in again if you have time. I'm going to be showing my progress through the day this post. I do have to run and get darling daughter some groceries and some more meds. Why is it that pharmacies don't have everything and only give partial prescriptions? Don't they know there's a gas crunch? Ai yi yi.

I decided that the white was going to be too stark with the other things going on in the room. I didn't want the table to match the molding and closet doors. Therefore, I decided to match the cupboard in the background. I didn't want to have as heavy a hand as the last time I was working with that antiquing pot. Now it needs three or four coats of poly: clean tables are important.

Guess that's it until I show the finished project always remembering that I can redo it if need be.

Shopping done, groceries delivered, still have prescription to pick up. Wanted John to feel encouraged by progress on the table so decided to slap on a doily and set the tulips in the center. He'll need to feel encouraged because he's doing the polyurethane over the weekend; he doesn't yet know this, but he is.

Oh boy! I'm sure that I'm going to love this in three more coats. We're going to the flea market...way too stinky at home. We're cracking a window for the pets.

  6. Ah...kidney stones. Very painful, I hear! Hope things clear up for her soon.

I have painted a table once...one we found at a garage sale for my daughter when she was in college. It turned out great! May you enjoy your completed project.

  7. Oh ...sounds like a painful prognosis. I hope it passes quickly and your dear daughter can enjoy the weekend.

We have painted plenty of things that have passed their prime and always are really happy with the outcome. I think white is a great choice for a table top.

  9. Grrrrooooaaaannn... I HATE painting. My kitchen needs to be redone BADLY and I'm dreading it. Our hallway going downstairs needed to be done and I've hired someone to do it for me.
    However...
I have actually been mulling over the idea of painting my kitchen table. The only thing stopping me is the chairs. They would need to be done too and that just seems like entirely too much work for a lazy bum such as myself!

  10. I've heard kidney stones are very painful. Hope your daughter feels fine soon.

I painted our dining room table once. After a while I missed the wood and stripped it and stained it again. The table was a dark wood and I stained it a lighter color.

  11. The table looks very nice with the antiquing effect, Vee! It matches your cabinet so well. I think you will love it as it will reflect light and brighten your dining room.

  12. Alas, I have a wood-loving, beautiful-furniture-making husband. Painting over what he has lovingly sanded and finished would put him into a catatonic state and I much prefer him the way he is.

That said, I have two end tables that were purchased and he has consented that perhaps, maybe, someday, I could paint those. I do love the look of painted mixed with wood.

  13. I was just looking at your other blog, and trying to work out why I am having problems with my thumbnails not showing in peoples blog lists, they usually do but suddenly stopped.
    Any advice welcome. :(
I am really hear to return you recent visit to my blog, thankyou. I am going to follow so we can keep in touch. Sorry to read about your daughter. Anyway enough rambling for now. I will be back.

  15. All I can say is that you are very, very brave. I have never done a project as large as a table.

    Kudos!

  16. Well, it is looking great Vee! You are way ahead of me. I have one more coat of stain to put on the top today. Then I will let it sit over the weekend, before I add the poly. We are suppose to be cold and rainy this weekend and I am working in the garage. So my table will be finished the end of next week, I think. Then on to the chairs!
    Hugs,
    Penny

Hope your daughter is feeling better very soon.

  17. I love seeing it since I think we have similar dining room sets..your chairs look like mine..this looks great.
I painted my oak, claw feet side and coffee table in my den...the bottom is robin egg blue with a glaze and the top black stain, the grain shows on the top...I have loved them and brought new life to my 30 year old tables.
    Enjoy!! It looks great!

  18. Hoping your daughter is improving!

Your table is looking good!! This has given me an idea of 'possibly' painting our table.
    Have a great weekend!

  19. Your table looks lovely. I am anxious to see it after it is polyurethaned by John. I've been meaning to tackle mine. It needs refinishing or painting, I haven't decided yet. It is a project I've never done before, I'm a bit hesitant. I think it best I wait for the weather to warm up a bit so I may open the doors and windows. Hope your daughter is feeling better.

  24. Well done, finding the right shade of white that works in your space and light takes a bit of trial but oh so much fun. And yippiee for a bit of polyurethane on the weekend.

  26. Oh, I am loving your table white. Bet you will really enjoy it. I have a couple of little tables to do when I can get outside..after the winds quit! I'll do them in white, too.
Thanks for the inspiration...sometimes, I need a kick in the butt to get me moving. :)
