Sweet Domesticity

Pardon this picture. It was taken to show you the finished table top and the entire garland. As you can tell, it shows neither. I'm not sure if it's Molly under the table or the fact that the table is put back together that makes me smile. Anyway, I just tossed it in here for no good reason.

This may be the best table top picture I have...

Oops. That's the best opened tulip picture I have. Let me try again.

Okay, this is the best I can do. What I like about the four coats of poly, sanded lightly in between coats, is that the table is as smooth as glass. John's not allowing me the use of it until this weekend so we're still balancing meals on our knees. Can't wait to sit down to a meal again.

I'd pop in a before picture, but one can see those throughout this blog. The table top was old, cracked, and tired. This buys us a little time until we can do better.

And, though it is a dark photo, this one best shows what the garland looks like. (See yesterday's post for details about the garland.)

We've got to keep spring going inside because we're expecting a blizzard in a couple of days. Are you expecting one, too?

  1. The table top looks absolutely gorgeous, Vee. Actually, I love the whole table, especially the perdestal. That kind of workmanship is seldom found now. And the chairs. I can just imagine you all sitting round it.
The spring garland is really cute. I may have to start making some flowers. This afternoon, in fact. It is raining and cold, and I am going nowhere, so an afternoon with a bag of wool, crochet hook and a fleece blanket over me sounds good. And coffee, of course!
    You have a good day!

  2. The table indeed is worth showing off. I love it and the chairs are one of my favorite style. The tulip makes me happy. I read about your banner and what a great idea. Might go for it myself. Blessing

  3. The table looks wonderful, Vee! And so lovely with that vase of fresh tulips. I just love your dining room, with it's great big picture window and that fabulous beadboard ceiling. I love your sweet garland, too! It will certainly be a reminder of spring despite the nasty weather that is coming. We will get a taste of that weather, too; but not nearly as much as you.

    Stay warm!

  5. Your table top look wonderful Vee! I am still working (or not, because of the cold and damp and it is in the garage) on mine.

  6. You did such an excellent job! And I have to say that your first photo made me want to come and visit that cozy and very friendly room. You have a gift!!

We hope to miss the snow this weekend as Warren and I will be at a beach. It will be cold...but I hope that the snow stays away.

  7. Awww... Molly is SO cute! :) Those are great pictures Vee!
The table turned out really well. It makes me think that I should do mine even more now. (I'm just SO lazy though.. sigh).
The garland turned out well too! It's looks really cute and indeed, the first picture represents Sweet Domesticity. :)
    Well done!

  9. Your home is so cozy and sweet! I have the same type of dining table and chairs. I had to paint and crackle the top of my table because it was in too bad of shape for anything else. I love your garland too.

  10. The table top turned out great. Never mind about 'buying time until you can do better'...it's a keeper! It suits in the big cozy picture (the one with Molly sleeping beneath!).

A blizzard? Oh dear! We'll take the rain that we are being offered then.

  11. Your table came out very pretty! I have almost the same dining set in my kitchen but I aways have a plastic coated tablecloth on mine as it gets a lot of use.

I hope the snow misses us as the predictions are for heavy rain. My husband is going to the Yasnkee opening game with co-workers tomorrow. He will be cold!

The garland is very cheerful..your grands will like it!

  12. Hi Vee!

Your table top looks beautiful!! I have an old table that was my grandmothers. The top is faded and worn and I would love to refinish it - you are giving me hope that it can be done! I love the garland! Your home looks so cozy and warm...thank you for sharing!

  13. Your tabletop turned out beautifully. Just think of all the conversation, laughter, and probably tears that the table has witnessed. And now, refreshed and oh, so pretty, it will savor even more life.

The garland is so pretty. Hang on to spring in your heart because it seems like she's not showing up outdoors any time soon!

  14. Your table top is beautiful!

Your pictures are warm and homey and cozy. Doesn't get much better than that! :-)

Yes, my Daughter announced that we are getting 6 - 12 inches, Friday. And the *best* part is, my Daughter is one of those un-flapable people. [She is MY Daughter?!?!] But this more-snow-news had her quite *falped*! -sigh- Even her! -sigh-

A cold rain with chance of snow mixed in is our weather report. So far just cloudy.

  17. Lovely pictures...I wish that I had a big window that let all that light in!

  18. Your table top looks so pretty, and I love the garland! These are such comforting pictures......there's just something about seeing a dog relaxing in a home.

Blizzards....brrr. However, it's 55 degrees here in south Texas.
Our dog wants me to take her walking, and I keep showing her the cold wind...she doesn't care.

  19. I applaud your perseverance in going four coats but well worth it; job well-done! I love your garland, too.

  20. Beautiful job on painting your tabletop, Vee. It looks great and will be so nice when you are able to sit there and enjoy your first meal. The big window, the darling banner and the fresh tulips all add to the cozy ambience. No wonder Molly is content to curl up and nap there.
It sounds like March may go out like a lion for you. Here it has been chilly and rainy.

  22. I know exactly why you posted that picture. Because even if we can't see detail, we can see how wonderfully 'homey' it is. I love a 'homey' home!

  23. Great job on the table top! I love working with old furniture - painting and refinishing. The old pieces are the best. Nice work!

  24. The refinishing project was a success! And I love the whimsy of the banner, LOL.

  25. It will be great to be back at the table for meals and I like the light finish. Thanks for becoming my 50th follower Vee. You used to visit my blog every once in awhile but last year I was having so much trouble figuring things out and couldn't comment on several blogs. Then a fellow blogger made some suggestions and that changed things a bit. I'm slow but have finally gotten into the swing of blogging and keeping up with the many interesting blogs I've discovered. I do sympathize with your continuing winter. Flurries are predicted for Sunday but today it was warm for the first time and we can see a few small patches of grass. There's still tons of snow and ice though! I-m so tired of winter! Hope the storm isn't too bad.

  26. Thanks for the pictures posting. It looks like the table came out great. I understand John wanting it to dry completely, especially after four coats. Hummm, maybe I'll try to refinish my table sometime. Your tulips are still holding together well, they're beautiful.

  27. Hi sweet Vee!!! The table top is just gorgeous!!!! I didn't see the "before" but the after is wonderful...John knows what he's talking about though ~ curing is half of the job!! Your home always looks so welcoming to me ~ I hope you are doing so good Vee, my blog list disappeared and I'm slowly building it back up by following my fav blogs!!! hugs and love dear friend, Dawn

  29. The table looks great! I happen to like cracked and old--kind of reminds me of me! lol
I have quite a few projects I hope to tackle this summer. I used to refinish furniture a lot, but not so much anymore. It's hard work and I just can't get motivated! Anyway, I am looking so forward to the end of winter! Happy Spring days as we looks towards the joy of Easter!

  30. The tabletop looks amazing! WHat color is the finish. The color is great. I know you are excited to use it. I do adore your garland. It's so cheery and springlike. With all the rain we have had, cheery is such a wonderful thought!

  31. You must know that we're expecting snow today and again this weekend, but they haven't said that "B" word.

The first thing I noticed was how comfortable Molly looks. I love dogs!

Both the table top and the garland are amazing. I love that you make the time for all of these projects.

    Your banner looks great too,
Sorry about the blizzard coming! We are cold and wet, but no snow1 Thank goodness.
    Hugs,
